GCSE History writing frames Paper 1 Inter War Years (1919-39) and Germany Depth Study (1919-45) Section A (15 minutes, questions a & b) a) What is the message of this cartoon? Use details of the cartoon and your knowledge to explain this answer. (Worth 7 marks) C – Content, what is happening in the picture? Detail what the key features of the cartoon are, what can you see in the picture? It is important you focus on picking out all aspects of the cartoon, not just the obvious, consider the expressions of characters in the cartoon, the background details for indications about the message. C- Comment, what is the meaning of this? Having picked out aspects of the cartoon, what do they mean? What is the cartoonist trying to tell us about how the characters involved feel, what has motivated them or what they are trying to achieve? C- Context, What is happening at the time? Say what is happening at the time the cartoon was drawn linking details and messages of the cartoon to the events the cartoonist has been inspired by and reacting to (remember for the cartoonist this is all big, current news). J – Judgement, Conclude your answer by linking the comment and context to give a complete review of the message the cartoonist wanted to convey. c) Explain why(particular event or treaty took place or was signed) (worth 8 marks) Eg; “Ever since 1870 France had felt threatened by its increasingly powerful neighbour, Germany. Clemenceau saw the treaty as an opportunity to cripple Germany by breaking it up into small, weak states so it could not attack France again.” Eg; Explain why Clemenceau wanted to treat Germany harshly 1 reason and explanation (so do this at least two more times at most) Offer 3 basic explanations and ensure you develop at least one, preferably explain 3 (one line) a) In what ways… Describe the main…What were the main…. (worth 4 marks) This question is worth 4 marks and simply asks you to list four key points concerning the events, treaty or year. This must be in sentences and be written fluently but kept brief. nb; This answer makes more than 4 points, see if you can circle the points it could get marks for eg; In what ways was the Treaty of Versailles damaging to Germany? The Treaty of Versailles had both immediate and long term impact of Germany as a result of the decisions imposed by the victorious nations. The treaty imposed huge reparations of roughly £6, 600 million which would not be fully paid off until 2010. It also placed restrictions on its army, 100, 000 men, removed territory around Germany and the African colonies. To add to these insults to German pride the War Guilt clause blamed Germany solely for the outbreak of the Great War. b) Explain what… Explain why… (worth 6 marks) Should be approached in a similar way to Section 1 B but must have at least 2 reasons, fully explained. c) How far… (Worth 10 marks)

Should be approached in a similar way to Section 1 B but must have at least 2 reasons, fully explained.

c) How far… (Worth 10 marks)To achieve higher marks you must put both sides of the argument then say which side you agree with and give reasons why you think so (one side has more evidence, or more reliable evidence, or in hindsight). You should know which side you believe in before you start writing, so create a small plan within 60 seconds before you start.

b a) In what ways… Describe the main…What were the main…. (worth 4 marks)

This question is worth 4 marks and simply asks you to list four key points concerning the events, treaty or year. This must be in sentences and be written fluently but kept brief.

What was the Petrograd Soviet? [4]e.g. ‘A body set up during the March Revolution.’‘It was a council of 2500 deputies elected by workers and soldiers whose interests it aimed to protect.’‘It was dominated by the Mensheviks whose aim was a workers’ revolution.’‘it recognised the Provisional Government but was determined to influence it and share power.’‘In time the Soviet was more influenced by the Bolsheviks who opposed the Provision Government.’‘The Soviet had originally issued Order Number One, stating it would only obey the government if it thought it was running Russia in the right way.’

b) Explain what… Explain why… (worth 6 marks)

Similar structure to the previous part b) although only worth 6 marks, this means you must get to the point quickly

How far… (worth 10 marks)

Another 10 mark question and this requires the same level of detail and a similar approach. You must show both sides of the argument (for and against, agree and disagree) and evaluate, weigh up the value of each side of argument and make a judgement as to which is the most convincing and why.
