GCSE ART- SUMMER 2 SKILLS BASED TASKS PART 3- COLOUR: Now that you have been set your final task for the identity project, you will be set a series of tasks to help you continue to practice and maintain your skills set during this time. Now is the perfect time to go back to basics, test what you’ve learned and strengthen the control you have over your tools and materials. You may either complete these tasks at the back of your book (starting on the last page and working backwards) or on separate paper. Keep the outcomes as we can add them to your body of assessed work when we get back. It is important to complete each task set and share your progress on Edmodo, even if you are still catching up with Identity project tasks.

Task 1- Colour as Tone: During the GCSE Art course you have already learned and applied colour astone. This is a practice task to remind you of the basics. For this task you should use colouring pencil. Choose one colour (could be more than one pencil if you have different shades of the same colour) and have a go at copying the image on the right. Observe the dark-medium-light tones and make sure the darkest and lightest version of your colour corresponds.

Task 2- Colour Schemes:Colour schemes and colour studies may form a part of yourdevelopment work in any project. Experimenting with colours like this links to AO2-Refine. For this task, choose oneobject in your environment (a real object- not an image) and draw or paint it using three different colour schemes. The colours you use do not have to be the actual colours of the object. Eg- you could paint a pepper in tones ofgreen and blue, you could use colouring pencil to draw a shoe in warm tones of red and orange etc. Remember to use colour as tone- light, medium, dark.

Task 3- Hues:Hue is a term which refers to both colour and shade-more specifically it can describe whether a colour is dull, vibrant, dark or bright etc. On the left are two versions of the same image. Consider the hue within each image and the difference in effect. Does one seem happier, more peaceful more sinister? Now choose any image from the internet and if you can, use a digital program (ppt, photoshop ect) to manipulate the ‘hue and saturation’ of the image, creating two versions as I have done. Alternatively, you could draw an image twice, adjusting the tones and shades wiith your paint or pencil, therefore creating two hues. Consider the different effectsyou’ve created.

Task 4- Emotion:This task only requires you toobserve, notice and reflect:Have a look at the colour charts to the right. Read through the various colour descriptions and associations. Consider how colour is associated with emotion, intention, feelings, behaviours etc. Consider whether you agree or disagree with these connections. Have a look through your own work and observe your use of colour; have you made informed choices? Do your colours reflect your intentions? What might you do differently in any future outcomes?
