The Charles Hall ExperienceOur program provides youth with daily living care, counseling, and case management services in three neighborhood-based group homes in Bismarck, North Dakota. We strive to identify and build on youths’ strengths and resilience. We help youth discover hope, earn self-esteem, and learn essential life skills to navigate daily challenges and develop healthy relationships.

Special programming includes:• Trauma-informed practice• ESSENTIAL© Program (moral development and ethical decision-making)• 40 Developmental Assets®• Circle of Courage®• Independent life skills and social skills training• THRIVE health and wellness programming• Equestrian activities and experiential learning• MAP Creative Arts (mindfulness, art and personal expression)• CREATING CONNECTIONS mentor program• Community-based spiritual life opportunities• Tribally-appropriate activity options for Native American youth• Public school and academic support with on-site transition teacher• After-school tutors• Collaborations with community partners (Bismarck Parks & Rec, YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra, and many others)• Community-based medical care and specialized treatment services

Gearing Up Youth for Positive Life Choices

Today’s world presents formidable challenges to adolescents and teenagers. Social pressures, fragile home environments, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health issues confront, and often bombard today’s families and communities. At Charles Hall Youth Services, resident life coaches and program staff help socially-vulnerable youth, ages 10 to 19, learn new skills, discover and build on their individual strengths, and prepare for more positive futures with strengthened community connections.

Our YouthFounded in 1965 as a mission of the United Church of Christ, Charles Hall Youth Services is community-based and offers high-risk foster care youth a stable, safe and nurturing environment. Youth enter our program for many reasons, and most are extraordinary survivors of difficult life circumstances. Our ESSENTIAL© Program teaches youth how to:• use mistakes to learn and grow,• understand the roles of reason and emotion (self-control),• fulfill responsibilities, and• respect the rights of self and others.

Charles Hall Youth Services seeks to meet the needs of youth in a holistic way, working toward healing and strengthening youth emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. We respect the strong connection between healthy spirituality and the well-being of today’s adolescents and teens. The goal of our multi-disciplinary programming is to help youth develop emotional stability and psychological resiliency, physical health, and genuine self-esteem.

Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD, receives a special award — “Good Voice for the Sacred Little Ones” — at the 2017 Ho Waste donor recognition luncheon in February. A Bismarck native, Perry is founder of the ChildTrauma Academy, where he serves as Senior Fellow. CTA’s impact is felt across the world — in the U.S., in Canada, throughout Australia, and in countries across Europe and beyond. Perry is known for his lifetime commitment to improving the lives of high risk children through direct service, research, and education. Presenting Perry with the “Wakaŋyēja Ičin Hō Waštē” award are Co-Executive Directors Gayle Klopp and Gayla Sherman.
