Just as much as we want to know about you, we want you all to know a bit about us. Global
Community Engagement is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that sponsors service
learning projects in Santiago, Dominican Republic. GCE works in underprivileged
neighborhoods with a focus on disadvantaged children. We work with Dominican and Haitian
children who attend local schools with limited resources.
This is GCE’s 8th year at FIU, and each year we strive to bring even more to the children that
need our help in DR, and continue to grow in popularity within the FIU community.
Participants join us for one week in the Dominican Republic, providing education and other
programming to the children. We work with a non-governmental
organization known as Acción Callejera (Action on The Streets) that
provides services to children in vulnerable situations, most of which
work on the streets as shoe-shiners, traders, florists, etc. The goal of
GCE is to enhance the effectiveness of Acción Callejera’s mission to
provide a haven for these children to grow emotionally, intellectually,
and spiritually, while taking part in various other projects throughout
the community. We work, we play, we reflect, we laugh, we help, weteach, we learn, and we may even cry. We are GCE!
For those little, superstars.
Because we love them,
for who they are.
