1  Just as much as we want to know about you, we want you all to know a bit about us. Global Community Engagement is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that sponsors service learning projects in Santiago, Dominican Republic. GCE works in underprivileged neighborhoods with a focus on disadvantaged children. We work with Dominican and Haitian children who attend local schools with limited resources. This is GCE’s 8 th year at FIU, and each year we strive to bring even more to the children that need our help in DR, and continue to grow in popularity within the FIU community. Participants join us for one week in the Dominican Republic, providing education and other programming to the children. We work with a non-governmental organization known as Acción Callejera (Action on The Streets) that provides services to children in vulnerable situations, most of which work on the streets as shoe-shiners, traders, florists, etc. The goal of GCE is to enhance the effectiveness of Acción Callejera’s mission to provide a haven for these children to grow emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually, while taking part in various other projects throughout the community. We work, we play, we reflect, we laugh, we help, we teach, we learn, and we may even cry. We are GCE!  For those little, superstars.  Just as much as we want to know about you, we want you all to know a bit about us. Global

Community Engagement is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that sponsors service

GCE – AB at FIU Organizational Chart

Committee Member:

A participant who is currently an FIU student or a member of the community who was selected

 by the e-board (co-directors and advisors) to be a member of the GCE – AB chapter at FIU.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to 

  Take an active role in the planning and implementation of the trip (e.g. lesson plans and

implementation, itinerary, decision making, donations, packing, etc)

  Attend all committee meetings (biweekly – Fall & weekly – Spring)

  Attend all fundraising activities (e.g. canning, sales, concession stands, on-line drives,

corporate sponsorships, etc.)

  If an FIU student – Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or better

  Be on time – meetings, events, fundraising activities

  Become educated on the history and mission of Global Community Engagement

  Become educated on the disadvantaged children issue

  Become educated on the needs and culture of the Dominican population  Submit a non-refundable fee of $150 (due on second committee meeting date)

  Report to co-directors and advisors

Co-Director:

A participant selected by the advisors to serve as a student leader who represents the GCE-AB

chapter at Florida International University. A co-director helps define the overall program goals

of the GCE-AB chapter and works closely with the advisors to insure continuity of site

implementation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to 

  Help recruit committee members (interviews, selection, and training)

  Attend AB site leader meetings and leadership retreat

  Attend E-board and committee meetings (biweekly – Fall & weekly – Spring)

  Become educated on the history and mission of Global Community Engagement

  Become educated on the disadvantaged children issue

  Become educated on the needs and culture of the Dominican population

  Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better

  Help plan, equip, and facilitate committee meetings 

  Lead committee meetings

  Be on time and start meetings on time  Submit a non-refundable fee of $150

  Assist in the development of a budget

  Plan and implements fundraising activities (e.g. canning, sells, concession stands, on-line

drives, corporate sponsorships, etc.)

  Attend and participate in ALL fundraising activities

  Report to advisors

  Provide committee members with few options before a final decision is made. These options

need to be run by the advisors before they are presented to the committee. A majority of

committee member votes is required for approval of an action or choice.

  Make committee members accountable. Follow through members’ performance and

completion of responsibilities

  Begin the process of member removal (with consultation of the advisors) in the event a

group member is not performing up to group expectations and not making a positive

contribution. An in-person warning and opportunity to remedy this situation must be

offered to the member prior to finalizing his/her removal from the group.

Faculty Advisor:

An agent who represents the Global Community Engagement National Organization at Florida

International University and who works directly with the co-directors and members of the

GCE-AB chapter at FIU on the trip planning, implementation and safety insurance process. An

advisor will provide individualized and group feedback to encourage co-directors and

members to consider important components in decision making.

A faculty advisor shall:

  Represent Global Community Engagement at Florida International University to insure that

the mission of both GCE and FIU are met

  Recruit co-directors and committee members (interviews, selection, and training)

  Guide group in making effective, ethical and educational decisions.

  Attend e-board meetings (at least one advisor must be present at each e-board meeting)

  Attend committee meeting if necessary

  Make contact with all external agencies (hostel, hospital, Acción Callejera, transportation,

university, museum, etc)

  Monitor and oversee group finances and budget

  Facilitate group reflections and educational components

  Finalize all decisions made by the group

  Make co-directors accountable. Follow through their performance and completion of

responsibilities

  Begin the process of co-director removal in the event he or she is not performing up to

group expectations and not making a positive contribution. Advisors shall provide an in-
