Linking the Six Nations

There are currently around 24 projects, with some of the most expensive including:

The Etihad Railway Network ($11 billion)

Riyadh Metro ($23 billion)

Jeddah Metro ($11 billion)

Air conditioned trains at speeds of up to 200km/h

Run in each direction every two hours mainly during the day

Freight trains operating at 80-120km/h, and will operate mainly at night

Diesel engine will cut the greenhouse gas emissions compared with road

transportation

Statistically, rail transportation is significantly safer

Project Phases

KSA + UAEUnder construction

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

KSA• Extending the existing rail network• 200km of line is under construction

UAE• ETIHAD railway project and has completed 120km• ETIHAD railway will finish in 2018 and will be connected to

GCC railway

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

QATAR + OMAN Will start execution

Qatar• Qatar Rail expects to receive bids on April 2015• Working on Metro project for world cup 2022• Will finish 2018

Oman• Oman railway tender will start late 2015• Railway construction will start 2016• Will finish 2018

Project Phases

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

BAHRAIN + KUWAIT Planning

Bahrain• Still in design phase• Expected to end by late 2019

Kuwait• Conducted a 5 year plan for its national railway system• Will be fully operational by late 2018

Project Phases

Page 31: GCC Railway

Progress to Date

Target operational date still set for 2018

Detailed engineering design work is nearing completion this year (2015)

Approximately 400 kilometers of track is already under construction/ constructed

Page 32: GCC Railway

Technical Challenges

Desert environment and sand movement in which the network is being built.

The section between Al Ain in the UAE and Sohar in Oman passes through the Al Hajar Mountains, which rise to 10,000 ft.

Only Saudi Arabia, has any experience of constructing and operating heavy railways and that experience is fairly limited.

Everybody will be competing for the same resources.

Skills shortage.

Scope creep.
