PREVIEW HOSPITAL BUILD & INFRASTRUCTURE MIDDLE EAST

011

Healthcare construction projects are continuing to crop up across the Gulf countries with a mixture of public, private and joint-venture initiatives. The aim is to address the needs of patients, both nationals and expatriates, and to

reduce the number of residents who are travelling outside the region for medical treatment. The UAE, in particular, are working on initiatives to increase the rate of medical tourism to the region.

While markets across the globe and the Gulf witnessed a steep fall owing the global economic slow-down, the GCC member states have seen a shift in the profile of the healthcare market. Diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems and obesity are on the rise in the Gulf, and the GCC has shot into the spotlight as one of the leading nations for these problems. The region has since realised that it needs to equip itself with specialist facilities and meet the sudden need for healthcare that is rising in the region.

The GCC’s total healthcare expenditure is expected to reach US$44 billion by 2015, an annual growth of 11.4% in five years. This surge in healthcare demand in the region and the escalating disease burden will create a need for around 90,000 more hospital beds by 2018.

The last few years have seen massive investment and expansion in the healthcare industry within the UAE, as is evident from the construction and licensing of various specialist hospitals, clinics and universities, particularly in the free zones. This growth has been driven by the increased role of international healthcare service providers, resulting in the increased numbers of international insurers and reinsurers that are being exposed to medical malpractice in the UAE.
