GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men’s cross country team and success have gone hand-in-hand over the years.

The Pioneers, winners of 19 of the last 20 Midwest Conference titles and 29 of the last 31, expect more of the same in 2017.

Grinnell, which beat the runner-up by 50 points last season, returns four All-MWC runners in John Lennon ’19 (second place), Jackson Schulte ’20 (seventh), Pieter Hansen ’20 (11th) and Gray Krewson ’20 (17th).

“In general, I’m very pleased with the summer the runners have put in,” said Grinnell coach Will Freeman. “They were very focused on preparation for the fall, realizing cross country is as much a summer sport as a fall sport.

“John Lennon is hoping for yet another big season and Jackson Schulte, who was hurt most of track season, is healthy now and ready to go,” he added. “Joshua Jensen ’19 has been a nice surprise … he’s trained hard and gone to another level. Pieter Hansen has also been training hard, Gray Krewson is fit and ready to go and Joel Baumann ’18 is another nice surprise who wants to run in the front group.”

Freeman said newcomers Matt Lieberman ’21 and Grinnell High School’s own Lucas Chamberland ’21 will also be major players.

“I’m really pleased where we are,” said Freeman. “We’ve had intensive workouts and the runners have shown a great commitment. Their goal is to repeat as conference champs and improve on their regional performance from last year.”

Freeman said a tweaked schedule will also help the team. “We’ve added some great meets, including going to the Chicago area and running in the Wheaton invitational,” he said. “It’ll be nice to see some new faces in terms of competition. And then we’re taking the top 10 runners out to Oberlin, Ohio, where we’ll see a lot of the top national teams. It’s a fast course and a good way to prepare for the conference meet.”

2017 Grinnell College Men’s Cross Country Preview

Cross Country Training SitesGrinnell cross country is fortunate to have a number of outstanding areas to train. All are grass or hard-pack trails.

Krumm Nature Preserve: Located just five miles from campus, Krumm Preserve is the primary training ground for Grinnell cross country. It offers 4, 6, and 9k loops. The natural terrain features woodlands, prairie grass areas, lakes, and a variety of wildlife. The mowed trails, a mixture of flats and hills, are perfect for training.

Rock Creek State Park: The site of Sunday long runs, Rock Creek is a large lake seven miles from campus. The grass trail around the lake is 11 miles in length and offers challenging hills as well as flats. Ancillary loops allow for long runs of up to 20 miles without repeating any part of the loop.

Arbor Lake: The site of all repeat mile workouts and all Kenyan runs (increasing tempo runs), Arbor Lake is located within the city limits and is a natural surface mile loop around Arbor Lake. It is located just one mile from campus.

Campus Loop: The North Campus soccer loop is marked around the soccer practice field complex and is used for interval work of 400-meter through mile repeats and tempo runs. It is a perfectly manicured grass surface.

Grinnell College Golf Course: Located directly north of Darren Young Track and Field Complex, and is the current home of the annual Les Duke Cross Country Invitational. The course provides outstanding footing and a fair mixture of rolling hills and flats. They are a spectator’s delight and is viewed by many as outstanding cross country venues.

2016 Midwest Conference Champions

GRINNELL, Iowa – With its entire scoring lineup from last year back intact, the Grinnell College women’s cross country team is looking for big things in 2017.

Leading the charge is the Emma “double dose” of Emma Luhmann ’18 and Emma Zimmerman ’18. Both were All-Region and All-Midwest Conference performers last season, with Zimmerman taking fifth at the league meet and Luhmann ninth.

Luhmann owns the 10th-fastest time in program history and Zimmerman the 12th.

Other returnees in the potential scoring unit besides the two Emmas are Whitney Teagle ’18, Anna Ahrens ’18, Nicole Arredondo ’18, Madeleine Breunig ’19, Mikayla Fujiwara ’20, Tori LaVerdiere ’20, Teagle and Jillian Rix ’18. Ahrens and LaVerdiere were both All-Conference last season.

Ahrens ranks 23rd in program history, Fujiwara is 26th, LaVerdiere 33rd and Teagle 34th.

“Emma, Emma, Anna and Whitney bring a lot of experience as senior runners,” said Grinnell coach Evelyn Freeman. “They’ve run at the conference and regional level and are great leaders.”

The two Emmas are captains along with Teagle and Meta Williams ’18. “We’ve had

fabulous leadership, whether it be from our designated captains or others,” said Freeman. “The upperclassmen are taking great ownership of the team as runners and leaders, which really leads to a positive and growth-minded team culture.

The Pioneers are also welcoming nine first-year runners, with Cara Keleher ’21, Ally Cottrell ’21 and Rebecca Villa ’21 looking as best toneders to break into the scoring unit.

“Our strengths this year are our depth and experience,” said Freeman. “All of our returnees have been growing as runners through their careers here. It’s nice to see how some people make great leads and are challenging to get into the scoring unit, which addes to our depth. We’re deep with both returnees and first-years.”

The Pioneers were picked to finish a close second to St. Norbert College in the MWC preseason poll. “We like being the underdog,” said Freeman. “We feel excited about trying to prove our second-place expectation wrong.”

Grinnell is fortunate to have one of the finest indoor/outdoor track and field venues in the NCAA.The Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center, which hosted the NCAA D-III National Indoor Championships in 2012 and 2016, opened in the summer of 2010. The center includes a wide-turn 200-meter Beynon synthetic-surfaced indoor oval track with six 42-inch lanes and eight lanes on the sprint straight. Dedicated pole vault and long-triple jump areas are outside of the oval.

The Bear Center also includes a state-of-the-art 50-meter Olympic-size swimming pool and outstanding fitness and weight-training facilities.

In the spring of 2014, the outdoor Les Duke Track and Field Complex got a complete facelift, as a new track and runways were installed to make it one of the finer facilities in all of Division III. The complex sits adjacent to Bear Center and is a dedicated track-only facility with multiple jump runways and throwing circles. The 400-meter synthetic-surfaced facility is the site of the annual Dick Young Track Classic.
