The global pressure relief devices market is expected to exceed $XX billion by 2019, having grown at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of XX% from 2012, driven by the increase in the prevalence of pressure ulcers and the growing importance of the successful execution of pressure ulcer prevention strategies. In 2009, an estimated three million adults in the US were affected by pressure ulcers, with incidence varying according to the healthcare provider setting. Incidence was estimated to be XX% in acute-care settings, XX% in long-term nursing facilities, and XX% in home-care settings. The overall prevalence of pressure ulcers in the US for 2008 and 2009 was reported as XX% and XX%, respectively (Hill-Rom, 2012).
Treatment for pressure ulcers is associated with high costs due to long hospitalization periods, slow healing times, recurring wounds, and an increased chance of infection. Treatment is expensive, with the treatment cost for a stage IV pressure ulcer exceeding $XX per patient in 2006 (CMS, 2006). It is therefore very important for caregivers to formulate appropriate strategies to prevent pressure ulcers using pressure relief devices. Adoption is expected to be driven by incentives given to providers to prevent the formation of pressure sores and improve quality of care.
The global pressure relief devices market is expected to exceed $XX billion by 2019

Introduction
2 Introduction
Pressure ulcers are common in the elderly population and those with physical impairments who are bed-ridden for extended periods. These sores are indicators of poor diagnosis and sometimes lead to life-threatening complications. Pressure relief devices are used as a part of pressure ulcer prevention strategies to prevent or alleviate their formation. Pressure relief devices such as mattress replacements, overlays and specialty beds reduce the magnitude and duration of pressure at the interface of a patient and a support surface.
A rise in lifestyle disorders such as diabetes and obesity is a major factor contributing to an increase in the prevalence of pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers are often more expensive to treat than to prevent, which is in turn leading to huge demand for pressure relief devices.
Prevention strategies employed by hospitals to prevent hospital-acquired pressure ulcers are also expected to fuel the growth of this market.
The pressure relief devices market has been segmented to include mattresses, mattress overlays, and specialty beds, covering rentals and sales.

9.1 Definitions
9.1.1 Pressure Relief Devices
Pressure relief devices are those that provide a conforming support surface and distribute body weight over a large area. Revenue from sales and the rent of specialty beds and the sales of mattress replacements made of foam, air, gel or fluid; and mattress overlays made of foam, gel or air are included under this category.
9.1.1.1 Mattresses
A mattress replacement is a support surface that totally replaces the standard mattress for pressure ulcer management. Standard foam mattresses, alternative foam mattresses, gel-filled mattresses, air-filled mattresses and fluid-filled mattresses are covered under this segment. One unit refers to a single mattress.
9.1.1.2 Mattress Overlays
A mattress overlays is an additional support surface designed to be placed directly on an existing mattress. Mattress overlays filled with foam, gel or air are covered under this segment. One unit refers to a single mattress overlay.
9.1.1.3 Specialty Beds (Rental)
This category comprises revenue generated from the rental of specialty beds to consumers, healthcare facilities such as acute care hospitals, and extended care hospitals.
9.1.1.4 Specialty Beds (Sales)
This category comprises motor-driven turning or tilting beds that aid in the manual repositioning of patient suffering from various medical conditions. One unit refers to a single bed.
