It does seem that our warm weather is reserved forthe latter part of August and the beginning ofSeptember. Let’s hope that 2013 bucks this trendand we don’t have the jet stream sitting in thewrong place off the British Isles!

Welcome to summer, that glorious time of the yearwhen most of us can put on our shorts and short-sleeved shirts and actually feel the air and sunlighton our skin. When we don't have to turn the heatingon when we get up. It is also the season that givesus sunburn and heatstroke and all those wonderfulthings. No matter how we see it, summer has amagic that we can't deny. As the hot summer daysroll by, the earth becomes dry and all the flowersbegin to thirst for moisture. Then from the hillside, some warm, still evening, the sweet rain-song of therobin echoes clear, and next day we wake up to adim morning and suddenly we are plunged into thedepths of Autumn! We have been allowed a fewrare glimpses of the sun to remind us that Summeris here and how beautiful Hedge End can look in acloudless blue sky with the sun beating down.

Psyche and body shift to suitthe rhythms of the seasons. In Summer we shed theheavy boots needed forsnow, allowing naked feet tofeel the sand sneakingbetween our toes as wemeander along the edge of thebeach. Just as the butterflyescapes the protective, constrictingcocoon of the caterpillar, we leave behind theslower, inward focus, characteristic of winter towitness this time when plants and creatures developto their fullest potential for splendour andfulfilment. A brilliant sun climbs to its zenith amidstthe hum of bees buzzing. The heart is the organsystem that shares the power of summer. As the

sun accelerates the life streams of the earth, theheart squeezes the living juices of the blood throughthe vessels, imbuing the body with awareness. Thebody needs a summer holiday to refresh the mindand soul.

This leads me neatly on to holidays. It is said that ‘achange is as good as a rest’ and I believe that to beaccurate. You don’t have to spend large sums ofmoney on an exotic holiday in the sun when youneed only look and sample what is on offerpractically on your doorstep. Explore your localdelights as it is a fact that many people overlooktheir locality and appreciate what is available toenjoy. You will be pleasantly surprised what you willdiscover and you might find that the burden on thebudget may be lighter.

I hope that we can all look forward to a long hotSummer with days filled with BBQs’, days on thebeach, swimming in the sea, strawberries andcream, Wimbledon and of course not forgettingvisits to the Hedge End paddling pool! Make themost of the days because before too long, the dayswill begin to draw in and in a flash of an eye it willbe Autumn once more.

Whatever you do, take care and enjoy what thesummer has to offer!

See you in the Autumn.

Summer is nearly here I hear you cry andperhaps this year we really are going toexperience some semblance of the sun!

Chair’s Report

Council News

CHAIR’S REPORT

(Outgoing Chair’s remarks following the AnnualParish Assembly, 3 April 2013)

This past year has been a very exciting year to beChair of Hedge End Town Council with both theQueen’s Diamond Jubilee and the home London2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We had awonderful Jubileecelebration in thevillage hall, thoughsadly not Queen’sweather and manyresidents alsoenjoyed their ownstreet parties andattended otherevents.

The Olympics made us all very proud and we hadour own Borough gold medallists in Dani King fromHamble and David Smith from Eastleigh, both ofwhom recently received the Freedom of EastleighBorough from the outgoing Mayor and Hedge EndTown Councillor, Rupert Kyrle.

We planted trees in Dowd’s Farm Park, including ourown Royal Oak sapling, and once again got soaked atthe Carnival and the Christmas Lights Switch on. Iwould particularly like to thank our many volunteerswho made these events happen, including our teamof Library volunteers.

Our HEWEB Youth Partnership really took off, thanksto Donna Brewer and her team of staff andvolunteers at The Box, including our Serving TheCommunity Award winner Linda Galvin and ourYoung Person’s Award winner Sean Pearson.

This time last year I said I wanted to help our localbusinesses thrive in the same way we support ourmany clubs and societies and we are now doing thatfollowing a £10,000 award to start up our Town

Team project supporting the shops and businessesin the town (or village if you prefer!) centre.

We have supported our wonderful local theatre, TheBerry, and again, thanks go to our local groups(many led by volunteers) who have been able to puton performances making use of our rent subsidyscheme, and also to the organisations who havebenefited from the small grants fund administers bythe Community & Culture committee. Don’t forgetwe now have a new pot of money available for bothfor the year 2013/14.

I missed Remembrance Sunday in Hedge End as Iwas away that weekend, but know it was as alwaysa dignified and extremely well attended memorial tothe local people who gave their lives in the serviceof their country. It is always quite a sight to see allour young people as members of their uniformedorganisations.

Finally I would like to thank our staff, both the officestaff and grounds staff who keep Hedge End lookingso lovely all year round, and a special mention toAlison who has done so much to make the HedgeEnd Gazette an interesting and informative readthat many local people tell me they enjoy.

It has been a privilege and a proud pleasure to serveas Chair of Hedge End Town Council for the year2012/13, to see first-hand the wonderful work ourlocal volunteers do, to attend many local events andmeet many of our local residents, and I wish thenew Chair every success in his forthcoming year. I’mso glad I moved here!

Council News Committee Reports

RECREATION & AMENITIES COMMITTEE REPORT

Well summer has arrived so they say. However, even if the weather isn’t as good as it should be, allthe jobs still have to be done as this is the busyseason for everyone. Firstly…

The AllotmentsOn my last inspection at the end of May, it waslovely to see the hard work being put into theirallotments. There were quite a few exceptional ones- and a few not so good! However, with some havingto give up their allotments for whatever reason, thismeans we are now in a great position of having nowaiting list at present! So if you know of anyonewho would like an allotment get them to pop in andsee Carolyn in the Town Council offices who will bepleased to help!

Bowling Green / Tennis CourtsThe bowling green and tennis courts season is alsowith us but, this year, if you want to play on ourpublic rinks or courts you will need to contact theTown Council offices 01489 780440 to collect thebowls or key. These facilities are very popular withthose who do not wish to be members of clubs, butjust like to play casually.

Paddling PoolThe paddling pool will be well and truly running bythe time this Gazette is delivered to you and we arevery pleased to give the franchise of the kiosk totwo enthusiastic young ladies who you will all get toknow if you are visiting with your children. Theirselection of goodies, I am sure will be appreciated. With regard to the parking, as you may know thereare 10 free parking spaces marked for the users ofthe paddling pool (at the entrance to Hedge EndSocial Club), so please use them to help the parkingproblems on hot sunny days.

Dowds Farm ParkDowds Farm Park is a great place to take yourchildren for a picnic. The lake is looking lovely andthe play area is great for the youngsters.

Hedge End Horticultural SocietyOnce again I would like to thank the members of theHedge End Horticultural Society for keeping theVillage Centre so lovely! The Council reallyappreciate what you are doing for the community.

Artificial Cricket PitchOne bad bit of news I have to report is that theartificial cricket pitch at Turnpike Pavilion has beenvandalised and unfortunately this has to bereinstated at the Town Council’s expense. Please ifyou are in the area and see any damage beingcommitted, let us know. It is such a shame thatthose using the facilities are being penalized by thevandals who have caused this act of damage.

I wish you all a very happy summer and let’s keepour fingers crossed for some good weather!

Jane Welsh - Committee [email protected]

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT

Summer is nearly here and we are beginning to seethe benefit that the new Groundsmans’ Store inWoodhouse Lane can bring. The centralisation of allof our plant and equipment enables ourgroundsmen to operate more effectively, avoidingthe need to collect their equipment from smallstores scattered around Hedge End. Unfortunately, the car park continues to be our biggest concern. The car park specification proposed by ourprofessional team required a surface that wouldallow water to drain through to the sub soil, whilstproviding a surface suitable for pedestrians. This hasclearly not been achieved and we are currentlyworking with consultants to find a satisfactorysolution to the problem.

The committee continue to closely monitor theexpenditure of the Council as there are manydemands made upon our resources. We endeavourto work with other agencies to achieve themaximum benefit from our expenditure. I think thatthe Youth Partnership is a particularly good exampleof where this has been achieved. I know that theyoung people of the HEWEB area have benefited

Community News Early Days in Hedge End

I too, used to spend many days there with NigelHaines. He was a friend for many years when I wasabout 12, in 1951/52. On the farm they had an oldlorry and a motorbike, both of which we wereallowed to use and it was here that I learned thebasics of driving both! We were only allowed todrive the lorry in a field, but the motorbike we couldride allaroundthe place, thoughnot on theroad! Ithink weonlystoppedgoing tothe farm when Nigel joined the Navy.

Another in Hedge End who was a wonderful friendto us kids was W.H.Abraham (pictured above). Hewould allow us to play in the barns behind RaeburnDairy (especially handy when it rained). He also putup a set of goal posts for us to play football in thefield just beyond the dairy, which was increased totwo goals when it was suggested we arranged amatch with boys from Botley. What a lovely man hewas! At times we were allowed into the dairy wherewe could either offload the filled milk bottles incrates, (taken away by Mr Davy because they weretoo heavy for us) or we could load the empty bottlesinto the washer prior to getting them refilled. Attimes we could ride and deliver the milk tocustomers with Sandy Barfoot and his horse andcart. Can you imagine that today with all the healthand safety issues, the chance of injury and all theramifications of that!

I also remember being taken off on severalafternoons to a ‘rabbit hunt’ with the Barfoot’s,Davy’s and Abraham’s. We were all allotted aposition over a rabbit burrow, then a ferret wouldbe put down. If the rabbit came up to your net and

you caught it, the chances are you were given therabbit to take home!

I am so glad to have grown up in the 50’s when lifewas good by comparison and people were allowedto make their own decisions about what wasallowable and safe and when we could go herethere and everywhere without parents having toworry about our safety. There were times when mymother would send me off with a pack ofsandwiches in the morning and not expect to seeme until I was hungry again at tea time! In themeantime, we could have ridden off to Botley toplay football or Boorley Green to fish in ChancellorsLane river or to ride to Eastleigh to take down trainnumbers. At the latter place, in Campbell Road, wewould dodge into the engine sheds and chancegetting thrown out by the Foreman or Chargehand.Didn’t stop us going back again though to get thatspecial number on the engine which, we heard, might be hiding away in the nether regions.

Another favourite was going to Hoe Moor(Old Moor before we knew better). I rodemy father’s bike there on one occasion andanother friend, (whose name I know, butwill not repeat here) rode that bike into thewater and dropped it! I had to wait for thetide to go out to retrieve it and then get ithome, dry it and leave it ready for Dad to use if hewanted it. I did not dare repeat that for a very longtime… By Terry Gleed

Hedge End Census Records

Community News

The environs of 1881 Hedge End is hard to imagineamongst the urban town of today. Most of today’scommunity reside in properties less than 30 years old. However, the 1881 Census records addresses that stillstand today and are some 132 years old, the residentsof which must often surmise the families residingbefore them and even perhaps the view from a certainwindow that would have given a far different vistathan that of today. They would also, perhaps, bequite shocked at the size of family that once occupiedtheir home, sometimes as many as 8 or 10 childrenwith ageing grandparents all living under the sameroof.

Just seven roads are familiar to today’s map of HedgeEnd: Wildern Lane, Botley Road, Bursledon Road,Woodhouse Lane, Hobb Lane, Shamblehurst Laneand St. John’s Road. Most of the AgriculturalLabouring community lived in “A Back Road”. NetleyFirs appears to be an area of gentry, Anne Sarah Coker(63) a Widow of a Merchant, who was born inBloomsbury, London and John Fowler (61) and hisfamily, who is described as a House & Land Owner. Each of these households employs Domestic Servants.Separate dwellings record Gamekeeper, Gardenersand Coachman with their families.

Public Houses include Wheatsheaf, where thepublican George J. Wild is also a Blacksmith, CricketersArms and Fountain Inn, both in St. John’s Road.

Statistically the most common surnames are Chalk(48), Wellstead (28), Jurd (28), Tomlin (26).William Terry (74) is the local Grocer/ Draper andemploys 5 assistants, his neighbour is John Terry (36)who shares the same trade and is most likely his son.

Apart from the expected Farmers, AgriculturalLabourers, Market Gardeners, other occupationsinclude Wood Hoopmaker, Sawyer, Carman,Laundress, Miller, Brickmaker. Hoopmakers wereoften found where baskets or barrels were needed –the main use for wooden hoops by the middle of the19 century would have been for baskets and light

tubs; barrels tended to be hoopedwith iron. In Hedge End, Hoopmakerswould have been busy providingstrawberry baskets and punnets.

Hedge End Toll House is the home of Toll CollectorsHenry (59) and Martha (57) Gurman. The residingVicar of St. John’s Vicarage was the Rev. James PalmerNash (39) from Bristol St. James, an Ancient Parish ofGloucester, with his wife Emily (38), their four childrenand his father James E. Familiar locations of Hedge End 2013 appear in thenames of Farms in 1881, such as Netley Hill, HollyGrove, Wildern, Freeground, Lake, Flanders, Grange,Shamblehurst. Other familiar names arise from thenames of dwellings such as Heath House and TanHouse. Myrtle Cottage still stands today and was thehome of William Stubbington (38), Coachman/Domestic Servant, wife Jane and four daughters plusa relative Katherine Wyatt, a Domestic Cook fromMarchwood. Up to 5 dwellings show the address as“Nr. A YEAR IN THE LIFE OFHEDGE END BREAKFASTROTARY CLUB

Who are we?The Hedge End Breakfast Rotary Club is a group oflocal people, who meet regularly to make acontribution to our local community, in anenjoyable and organised way. Our Rotary Year runsfrom July to June and we have had a busy, but veryenjoyable 12 months.

What have we been up to?June 2012 – we supported the Wildern OpportunityGroup to take children, and their carers to, “KIDSOUT” at Paulton’s Park. Rotary Clubs from all overWessex take over the Park for the benefit ofchildren with special needs.Autumn 2012 & Christmas 2012 – we worked withlocal Primary Schools and Wildern School to collectShoe Boxes filled with donated Christmas gifts forchildren in other countries, who would otherwisehave no presents at all. Our Christmas Float, inwhich Santa and his Merry Elves travelled aroundHedge End, raised a considerable amount of moneywhich will be used to support local organisations.During the past year we have provided funds to buya new computer and software for the ‘TeenageDrop-In Centre’, and also made a donation to ‘TheBox’ to provide cooking utensils, music andrecreational items for the additional needs YouthGroup known as “The Friday Night Project”. Wewill also be supporting the Hampshire and Isle ofWight Air Ambulance.Sunday 7th April 2013 – we held our bi-annual‘Retired People’s Tea Party’ at the 2000 Centre inHedge End which was attended by 90 guests! Afabulous afternoon of food, drink, and musicalentertainment, ensured a great afternoon was hadby all.Saturday 27th April 2013 – we held our “RaceNight” at the 2000 Centre with the profits going tothe Stroke Association, the Shree School in Nepaland Rotary Charities. Wildern School, together withthe Interact Club and the Rotary Club, recentlyraised enough funds to pay for 7 computers, plus

generators to go to the Shree School. This school isvery remote and only has 7 classes each witharound 90 pupils.

Our Links - we have links with, and support WildernSchool, and an Interact Club (which is a juniorRotary Club). We assist the School with variousNational Rotary competitions such as ‘YouthSpeaks’, ‘Young Musician’ and ‘Young Writer’.Standards achieved have been very high and theSchool has had considerable success!

A future Rotarian? We are always interested inmeeting people who would like to considerbecoming Rotarians. We meet at the MacdonaldBotley Park Hotel, Winchester Road, SO32 2UA at7.00am on the first three Tuesdays of the month, and at 7.30pm on the fourth Tuesday.

TREE WARDEN REPORT

The weather has been rather on the wet andblustery side over the first three months of this year. This has had a delaying effect on the leaves andblossoms forming on trees and shrubs. The end ofApril and the early weeks in May saw a quick changeas the weather improved slightly. There was a granddisplay of pink and white on the trees, with azaleas, rhododendrons and flowers now beginning tobloom. It’s a much brighter scene around the town.

On the wild side, the Hawthorns, Blackthorns havebloomed and the Sycamore’s tassels are quite longthis year! (There is a carving of the leaves and seedsof the Sycamore in St Frideswide in Oxford, datingback to 1289, so the species has been with us a longtime!)

There is quite a variety of tree shade and colour, giving a rather peaceful look to the area. The Rowantrees are showing a large amount of blossoms. If thisis a good indication, there will be a good harvest forthe wildlife to feed on later in the year. Hopefullythe weather will improve so that we can get out andenjoy what nature has to offer. FAIRTRADE SUCCESS ATKING’S COPSE SCHOOL

During March the children andstaff at King’s Copse Schoolenjoyed a fabulous FairtradeFortnight of exciting activities, including specialassemblies, cooking, lessons, games and events.

Amongst these events was avisit from an artist whoworked with our children tocreate some beautifulFairtrade fabric printing. Welearned about what some ofthe African symbols that we

see on Divine chocolate wrappers actually mean.

The Fairtrade snack challenge was particularlysuccessful, as was our Fairtrade non-uniform day.

During the second week, a few of our Year 6children attended a Fairtrade Conference at WildernSchool that they found to be particularlyinformative, providing some new ideas for us tofollow up. We explored the ‘journeys’ of Fairtradeproducts, starting from the farms and communitieswhere they are grown and ending up with thesupermarkets where we buy them.

As a result of our commitment to Fairtrade over thelast 12 months, we are pleased to announce thatour Fairtrade School status has been renewed foranother year. The assessors at the FairtradeFoundation commented that:

“The school is doing a great job in teaching the kidsas well the wider community about Fairtrade…lesson plans and activities based on Fairtrade lookgreat [and] we like the way you involve all thepupils at the school insome kind of activity.Thank you so much foryour continued supportin helping to bringabout a better deal forfarmers in developingcountries.”
