GAZETTE IMPROVEMENTS In the Fall of 2016, we promised to

review the Gazette in the Spring of

2017. At the end of April, we solicited

comments and received a number of

responses. On June 14, an Ad-Hoc

Communications Committee (residents

Pat Heenan and Laura Lawson and

staff Jane Rosman and Kate Waters)

met with Gazette editor Jenny Wu to

review the responses and make

recommendations.

Based on residents’ ideas, we are

making the following changes,

beginning with next week’s Gazette:

The Weekly Schedule format will be

in two columns, similar to the text.

There will be a small vertical line

between the columns. These changes

will make the Schedule easier to read,

especially for residents with low

vision.

The Weekly Schedule will have end

notes, such as “continued” and headers

such as “Tuesday, continued” to guide

readers when a day’s events run from

one page to the next.

Articles from Departments and

Residents will be solicited quite

actively by Jenny. There has been a

dearth of article submissions, so Jenny

will reach out to resident committees,

councils, the Foundation, and Dining

for more articles.

Proofreading will be beefed up.

There will be an additional, final

proofread by volunteers right before

printing on Thursday night.

The Weekly Menu will be sent out

electronically with the Gazette on

Fridays.

As always, we welcome your

feedback. If you have any comments

or suggestions for the Gazette please

send them in writing to Jenny Wu at

[email protected] or drop her a

note in Life Enrichment.

ADMINISTRATION UPDATE Appreciation is abundant to

residents and Dining Services staff for

the success in our “amended – interim

– abbreviated” dining venues since

50% of the dining area has been taken

over by the construction. Meals are

working exceptionally well due to

residents cooperation and use of the

reservation system. Dining in the

Employee Dining Room is exceeding

everyone’s expectations. Sterling

Lindsay, Chef Derek Campbell, Chef

Howard Henry, Manager Tonita Butler,

and Dave Baker extend their

appreciation to everyone for making

dining successful during this first

phase of the EBI. Well done, everyone

WWII INTERVIEW: BARBARA CURRIE This week’s video features Barbara

Currie on Channel 971 at 10:00 a.m.

Tuesday, June 27 and 2:00 p.m. on

Thursday, June 29.

Barbara was 13 years old when

Great Britain announced it was going

to war against Germany. The next day

Barbara’s parents presented her with

choices she had to make immediately:

Move to Northern England with her

boarding school; move to Ireland with

younger cousins; stay in London with

her parents. Barbara chose to stay.

This story is about how Barbara, her

parents, her brother, and her neighbors

coped with Germany’s mounting

aggression. Each person in the London

area had a “war job” in addition to a

regular job. Even 13-year-old Barbara

had a significant responsibility to care

for an elderly neighbor.

The video features a description of

Barbara’s brother’s “wartime job.” He

was a medical student in London.

When a major bombing happened, the

entire medical school would be taken

immediately to the site. Each student

provided help at the level of his

training. The immediacy of this aid

given to the wounded before they

could be moved to a hospital was

considered critical.

JUNE BOOK REVIEW Jay Warshawsky will review

Nutshell by Ian McEwan on Tuesday,

June 27, at 3:00 p.m. in the new

Auditorium.

Nutshell is a clever contemporary

version of William Shakespeare’s

Hamlet.

The protagonists are Trudy and her

lovers and brother-in-law, Claude.

The narrator of the tale is Hamlet,

Trudy’s unborn baby. Within Trudy’s

uterus Hamlet listens to podcasts and

the BBC with his

mother, and he

shares her interest

in wines. While

eavesdropping,

Hamlet becomes

privy to a scheme

hatched by Trudy

and Claude to kill

his father, Trudy’s

husband, and take

ownership of his father’s dilapidated

but valuable London house.

As the lovers plan what they hope

will be a perfect crime, Hamlet

schemes to thwart their actions from

his confined location within Trudy’s

body. The story does not follow

Shakespeare’s sequence, so the end of

Nutshell is something of a cliffhanger.

The plot and McEwan’s language keep

the reader engaged to the last page.

Jay, an electrical engineer, studied at

the Illinois Institute of Technology,

and Purdue and Northwestern. He has

performed research and development

for commercial and government

organizations. As a life-long fan of the

Chicago Cubs, he was delighted when

they ended a 108-year drought and

won the World Series in 2016.

All are welcome to hear this

interesting review.

Shakespeare's ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord seizes the throne with the

Annis portraying Lady MacBeth. Themes of historic recurrence, greater
