Members Corner

What Are You Thinking? by Karen StathakisDo you ever think about what you’re thinking about? I do, and there are times when I am disappointed by my thoughts. They may not be evil or destructive, but they may not be encouraging or beneficial either.

Some time ago I read the following anonymous quote in a newsletter:

“Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit;

Sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.”

That started me pondering about how our thoughts can influence our destiny! This process could be applied to either positive or negative thoughts; faith-based or fear-based thoughts. As we journey through this Coronavirus pandemic, or any trial or tragedy, there are many opportunities for our thoughts to turn to fear, anxiety, and negativity, resulting in a negative mindset. While these are challenging times, patterns of negative thinking have no beneficial effects.

I encourage all of us here in The Garlands community to turn our minds to positive or faith-based thoughts; thanksgiving and gratitude for living in a wonderful, safe place where we are cared for so well; new activities, warm sunny days; the anticipation of family gatherings, etc. Chances are, as we guard the thoughts we are thinking, the words we speak can be encouraging and life-giving to others.

Philippians 4:8-9 TPT: So keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful, and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising Him always. Follow the example of all that we have imparted to you and the God of peace will be with you in all things.

We Raised HOW Much for the Barrington Area COVID Response Fund?!As the coronavirus began to wreak havoc on the world and we enacted Stay-at-Home, member Rebecca Blickenstaff set her sights on finding a way to be of service. Noticing the many members out walking each day, she approached The Garlands with the idea of holding a walkathon to raise money for Barrington families impacted by the pandemic.

In the weeks leading up to the Walkathon, members registered for it and began building up their stamina by walking far longer than usual. On June 10 members tied on their sport shoes and, with Sandra Sieber and Bethanie Lochman (Fitness) leading the way, counted their laps as they walked – and walked – and walked around our beautiful campus all day.

Members, friends, and families generously supported the cause, raising $5,223.25! The Garlands matched that, bringing the total to $10,223.25. THEN the Barrington Area Community Foundation/Barrington Area United Way matched that, bringing the grand total to $20,000 for local families in need!

Thank you Rebecca Blickenstaff, for inspiring such a wonderful event! Thank you Sandra and Bethanie from the Fitness Center for making it happen. And thank you members, friends, families, The Garlands, and the BACF/BAUW for your generosity! Together we make a difference.

Garlands Members Are So Accomplished!Look for a piece in next month’s Gazette on Charlie Foos and his intricate and gorgeous wood carvings. Know someone here whose work we should know about? Maybe it’s you? Please call or email Lynn Adams (*13 or [email protected]).

Bulletin Board

Large Print Did you know you can ask for us to print the Member Directory, This Week, or even the Gazette in extra-large print? We can print on 11 X 17 paper in a huge font. Call the Concierge Desk (*07) or Lynn in Activities (*13).

Library: the Barrington Area Library BAL is semi back in business! Go to their web site (balibrary.org) to reserve books and set an appointment for a “parking lot pick up.”

Purse Shelves Reminder, as explained in the member handbook on page 25: “Decorations placed on doors or purse shelves next to doors must be in good taste and not promotional in any way. Wreaths or small decorations may be attached to the door knockers. Please do not use wreath hangers, nails, screws, or adhesives on any hall or entry door. The Garlands reserves the right to ask you to remove personal items in common areas.” Removing any item from another member’s purse shelf is considered theft. Anyone objecting to a member’s decoration should call Nancy McCaffrey, Director of Hospitality (*04) with your concern.

Recycling Are you a recycler or would you like to be? It’s easy! Collect your newspapers, cardboard, plastics, and metals in a paper bag (from grocery stores or our food-to-go) and bring them to the garage. The large carts on wheels are for recycling. Be sure NOT to include the following as they are unacceptable: Styrofoam, tissues, paper towels, or any items with food residue. If in doubt, leave it out! If you need help, your housekeeper or Member Services (*02) can transport items for you.

Religious Services If your house of worship is streaming Saturday or Sunday services that you’d like to watch later on Channel 17, please call Lynn (*13) or Nate (77415) in Activities. If you leave a voice mail, specify the name and town of the church/temple and the time the service takes place. If they’re in a format compatible with our platform, we’ll run pre-recorded services on Sunday afternoons or evenings on Channel 17. We’ll keep you posted on this!

Face Masks Ever get to the elevator or lobby and realize you’d left your face mask behind? One member suggests this: always leave a mask hanging from the inside handle of your front door. Forget it no more!

Garden Hose When using the garden hoses, remember proper storage. Turn off the water to the hose, drain all the water from the hose, coil back onto the hose holder. Please do not wrap the hose before draining it as it can cause damage to the hose and become stuck. Thank you for helping your neighbor.

Garden Planters Remember to keep your garden neat and tidy. If your weeds are winning, reach out to Nate (77415) or a friend for help. If weeds get too tall, you may receive a reminder at your door about weeding your garden planter. We can also help water your garden.

Garlands Golf Club (Partnership with Makray) If you don’t yet have your Garlands Golf Club ID and you’d like to play golf at Makray Golf Club as a guest of The Garlands (greens fees), please ask the Concierge (*07) for an agreement for you to fill out and return. Or call Lynn Adams in Activities (*13). Go to MakrayGolf.com for their most recent guidelines/restrictions or ask Lynn (*13) or Nate (77415) in Activities to print them out for you.

What are YOUR “Stay-at-Home Pearls of Wisdom”? How did you pass the time? Did you learn something new? Did you accomplish a project? What advice would you give to seniors confined to their homes and their family members? We want to hear YOUR thoughts – they might be just what another member needs to hear. Email or call Lynn Adams ([email protected] or *13) with your answers. If she’s away from her desk, you can even leave them as a voice mail. Please specify whether or not it’s all right to include your name. We’ll compile your responses and publish them in the next Garlands Gazette!

Last month we shared Sam Jeffers’ COVID mask-making initiative, and this month Joyce Carlson tells about her productive “quaran-time” . . .

From Joyce CarlsonUpon moving into The Garlands eleven years ago, I, like many other members, said “I’m starting a new phase of my life. Now I’ll have time to organize and preserve photos and other lifetime memories!” But the busy schedule of activities here again postponed those projects . . . until Covid-19.

So throughout quarantine, scrapbooks from school days, weddings, and baby albums were scattered around my apartment. There were even photos of great grandparents and their histories before coming to America. Sorting and labeling helped the days go by. Hopefully, the project will be completed for the next generations to enjoy and learn about their heritage.
