1) INTRODUCTION
The National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS was launched in mahatma Gandhiji‟s
centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student‟s personality through community service. NSS is a
voluntary association of young people in colleges, universities ad at +2 Levels working for a campus –
community linkage.
The cardinal principle of the NSS programme is that it is organized by the students themselves, and
both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of
involvement in the tasks of nation building.
Objectives behind the NSS:
To enable the students to understand the community in which they work.
To understand themselves in relation to their community.
To identify the needs and the problems in the community for the solution of which they can be
involved.
To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
To apply their education in finding practical solution to individual and community problems..
To develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities.
Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
To develop capacity to meet emergencies and national disasters.

To practice national integration.
The Motto of National Service Scheme is „NOT ME BUT YOU‟. This reflects the essence of
democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. It shows that the welfare of an individual is
ultimately depend on the welfare of the society on the whole.
The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The eight bars represent 24 hours of the day. It
reminds to be in readiness for the service of the nation. The red colour indicates the active energy and
high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the contribution shared for the welfare of the mankind.
2) ABOUT THE INCEPTION OF NSS UNIT IN G. V. P. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (A)
The NSS unit bearing the number AP11-007 has started in the month of September, 2011. As a
part of regular activities the unit conducted Voluntary blood Donation Awareness campaign on 13-10-
2011 followed by National Voluntary blood Donation Camp on 14-10-2011. Under the NSS banner a
record of 408 units of blood was collected. Student volunteers have actively participated and organized
the programme very effectively.
The NSS unit has observed National Communal Harmony Campaign week during 19th
– 25th
November of 2011 and observed Flag Day on 25th
Nov, 2011. A donation of Rs. 1525/- was collected
and sent to Secretary, National Foundation for Communal Harmony, New Delhi.
In the month of December 2011 Plantation of Saplings programme is conducted and the
programme is inaugurated by Hon‟ble Vice Chancellor Dr. P. Tulasi Ram Das on College Foundation
Day i.e., 16-12-2011.
Special Camp:
As a part of special camping programme the unit has organized its first special camp from 25-
01-2012 to 31-01-2012 at Anandapuram village. Total of 46 student volunteers along with 5 local non
student volunteers of Anandapuram have participated in the special camp. The team was lead by C.V.
Nageswara Rao, Programme Officer and Y.C.V. Kondaiah, Assistant Programme Officer.
In the pre-camp survey we met with local sarpanch, secretary and youth association of the
village to identify he needs of the people living in the village. Consequently we addressed on
challenges such as awareness on ethical voting for democratic country, sanitation, HIV/AIDS, infected
diseases, first aid measures, yoga for leading a healthy life, literacy. Also student volunteers have taken
initiative in creating interest in studies among school children.
Innovatively volunteers have played a drama in the midst of the village. The morale of the
drama being getting one aware of the government policies, cleanliness and how to prevent accidents.

6) DAY WISE REPORT OF SPECIAL CAMP
The NSS unit has organized the special camp at the adopted village i.e., Anandapuram situated 10 km
away from the college. The camp is inaugurated on National Voter‟s Day i.e., 25-01-2012 and
successfully completed on 31-01-2012. The detailed report of the day to day events organized is
furnished below.
DAY-1: 25-01-2012
The NSS Special camp is inaugurated in Parvathi Parameswarula Kalyanamandapam of Anandapuram
at 10.30 am on the occasion of National Voter‟s Day i.e., 25-01-2012. The function is presided over by
Sri K. Hari Prasad, MPDO, Dr. P. Soma Raju, Secretary, Gayatri Vidya Parishad, Sri D. Karunakar,
Panchayat Secretary, Sri Chandaka Suri babu, Ex Co-operative manager, C.V. Nageswara Rao, P.O
and Sri Y.C.V. Kondaiah, Asst. PO.

Sri K. Hari Prasad, MPDO of Anandapuram has addressed the volunteers and villagers. He repeatedly
stressed the importance of power of vote in democratic system and advised the
youngsters to be the foundation and pillars of democratic India by exercising their vote. Prof P. Soma
Raju advised the NSS volunteers to identify the eligible unemployed youth of the village who can be
given training in our college that would develop them as skilled technicians. He also asked to make a
survey of minimum electricity requirement of the house hold and think of ideas to provide alternate
energy based on solar power or any other.

After lunch a human chain was formed by the villagers along with the NSS volunteers and a pledge to
vote was taken by this human chain.

DAY-2: 26-01-2012 Republic Day
On this second day of the special camp has taken initiative in organizing sports on the occasion of
Republic Day Celebrations for the students of ZP high school of the Anandapuram village.
All the students have actively participated in the games conducted by the volunteers. Sri Sanyasi Rao,
Principal and Sri Jahn Rabi, Physical Director of the school have inaugurated the event and encouraged
the unit. They commented that “Organizing the event by in involving the students is unique its way.
And also by this student volunteers gain organizational skills and leadership skills”.

Later in the afternoon after lunch, the unit has moved into the village in making a survey door-to-door
in knowing the lifestyle of the villagers. The unit has divided into 7 teams to go to the residents. The
points which the survey focused are furnished below.
Knowing the strength of the family.
Knowing the educational details of the family members.
Knowing the health condition of the family.
Knowing any school drop-outs.
Taking details of the members who has voter id card and who has not.
Taking details of the any eligible unemployed youth.

In the evening the unit has met the village sarpanch Smt. Chandaka Lakshmi to intimate about the
HIV/AIDS awareness programme which is being held on 27-01-2012. She has positively responded
given us the affirmation that she would let a person make a DANDORA in the village.

DAY-3: 27-01-2012
Student volunteers have gone door-to-door to inform the residents of the village about the HIV/AIDS
awareness programme being organized in the kalyanamandapam. All the people were motivated to
join. At 11.00 AM Dr. Ronanki Ramesh, Additional DM & HO, Visakhapatnam has addressed the
volunteers as well as the villagers about the misconceptions people have about this dreadful disease.
He said sex with one‟s spouse only will prevent one from this disease.
Dr. Kishore Kumar and Dr. Ramesh, Chief, ICTC later enlightened about the ART medicine and the
pathologist who are available in the local PHC.

A yoga session was arranged to make aware the how the pranayamas help in maintaining good health
and make us free from all toxins.

DAY-4: 28-01-2012: CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS
The unit has reached its fourth day. ‘Clean and Green’ is today’s motto for the NSS volunteers who actively participated in the program. The volunteers swept the streets clean and the village municipality and, some of the local villagers also joined the movement actively. The villagers were made aware of the diseases, to which they may fall victim due to unclean surroundings.

Girl volunteers have gone to ladies door-to-door to make preventive measures on HIV/AIDS
campaign. The ladies of the village were given questionnaire on the know-how of the HIV/AIDS and
explained the first aid treatment and how to make the life easier even with HIV. All the ladies showed
extreme interest and let other ladies too join the campaign.

Volunteers went to the primary school and interacted with the students. The students were told
about the self hygiene. Cultural events were organized along with the motivating acts for the
entertainment of the students.

DAY-5: 29-01-2012
PHASE-I: FREE DENTAL CHECKUP CHAMPAIN WAS CONDUCTED AS A PART OF INFECTED
DISEASES.
The NSS camp reached to its fifth day with a fresh motto of free dental checkup. It was conducted by
Dr Capt Rtn PHF P Satya Prasad, District Sainik Welfare Officer for children 11 and below. The prime
importance was given to children in order to prevent tooth related problems from a tender age itself
.Children willingly came forward for the check up and were told to maintain proper oral hygiene.
Toothbrush and toothpaste were distributed among the children. After diagnosis medicines were also
given to the prescribed patients free of cost.

PHASE II: CULTURAL EVENT
NSS volunteers made the evening colorful by organizing variety of cultural events for the kids
below 11 years. It included dancing, singing, role playing etc. Everyone had a hearty time and
departed with a smile. After the check up, indoor games like musical chairs were conducted
for the children who participated and enjoyed to their heart’s content.

PHASE III: Preventive Measures on HIV/AIDS campaign
Preventive measures on HIV/AIDS campaign is continued by girl volunteers. The ladies of the village
were given questionnaire on the know-how of the HIV/AIDS and explained the first aid treatment and
how to make the life easier even with HIV.

DAY-6: 30-01-2012: Interaction with school children
Today NSS Volunteers have taken initiative in mingling themselves with the school children with the
permission of Head Mistress Smt. Varalakshmi. They have distributed themselves in various classes and
interacted with them. The students were motivated how education creates interest and how it helps in
analyzing real world outside. Through simple experiments theoretical knowledge was associated and created
awareness about the importance of education in their lives.
They were explained about the bad consequences that might incur because of drop out from the school and
the struggle that it may lead in their life. Later list of school drop outs were collected from the school records.
Already the management of the school are trying to motivate them in continuing their education. But still they
were reluctant to continue as most of them were girl children and the boys need to attend for some sort of
daily wage work to assist their father at home.
Some volunteers have interacted with the school dropouts and tried to motivate them in various respects and
made them understand how dangerous illiteracy is and how friendly can the literacy be.

Day 7: 31-01-2012 Closing Ceremony
We have reached the last of the camp. Volunteers have met the villagers and known their views
about the camp and requested them to give any suggestions in regard to the improvement and
modifications so that they can perform well for the betterment of the rural villages.
Prizes were distributed to the winners and runners of the high school students in their school itself
during the assembly.
Valedictory function was presided by the MPDO, Sri K. Hari Krishna, Head Master of high school ,
Principal of GVP College of Engineering (A), Dr. N.V.V.S.J. Gandhi and Vice Principal, Prof. A.B.K. Rao
