SAME SEX MARRIAGE

• 53% of Americans favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally, compared to 41 % who are opposed.• 64% of Democrats and 57% of independents

favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally, compared to 34% of Republicans.

LGBT PRIDE MONTH

• The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969.

• In several occasions, the President of the United States has officially declared a Pride Month. First, President Bill Clinton declared June “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month” On June 2, 2000 . Then during the years went by , on 2014 President Barack Obama declared June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.

• Stonewall riots is a violent demonstration by members of the gay community against policy raid that took place in June 28,1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of NY.

WHY IS GAY PRIDE MORE THAN JUST PARADES AND PARTIES?

• Gay Pride: Is a series of events that happen in cities big and small that celebrates being gay in a straight world. It’s a symbolic action that started after the 1969 Stonewall Riots in NYC when gays fought back against police brutality.• Pride matters because its not always obvious that

out world is built around straight privilege; which says its ok that the top NFL draft can kiss his girlfriend but our gay professional sports hero, Michael Sam is doing something wrong because he kissed his boyfriend on television. That kind of controversy needs to end. Gay Pride helps.

WHAT DOES THE RAINBOW FLAG MEAN?

• The Rainbow Flag symbolizes the lesbians, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride.
