Gautier remained a rural community until the start of World War II when shipyard workers began to move to the area to construct ships to support the war efforts at the local shipyard. This shipyard was Ingalls, that was owned by Bob Ingalls. Even today, this shipyard is among the most substantial shipyards in the United States.
