This ‘Life-saving’ Drug Isn’tAffordable Care for ManyMUMBAI: A drug that physiciansare now calling “life-saving” totreat those critically ill with Co-vid-19 is adding to ballooning ho-spital bills for patients seeking ca-re in private hospitals and also le-aving physicians with the dilem-ma of administering the drug toonly those who can afford it, re-ports Divya Rajagopal. Tocili-zumab by Roche pharma, marke-ted by Mumbai-based Cipla, is be-ing used on Covid-19 patients whosuffer from extreme immune sy-stem response towards the infec-tion, called cytokine storm, lea-ding to multi-organ failure andeventually death.

Tocilizumab in certain trial stu-dies was shown to slow down thecytokine response in Covid-19 pa-tients by modulating a proteincalled IL6. In India, the drug soldunder the brand name Actemra,is approved for use in autoimmu-ne diseases such as rheumatoidarthritis and for a treatment las-

ting six months it costs `̀2.5 lakh.For Covid-19 patients, it costs`̀60,000 per dosage.

Private hospitals in Mumbai ETspoke to said most of them are ad-ministering the drug for Covidpatients who are in ICU. “But sin-ce the cost is high, we are usingthis drug only on those pati-ents who can afford it; thereis also a shortage of thisdrug,” said an official from aprivate hospital. LeenaMenghaney, a lawyer withDoctors Without Borders,told ET that such practices are le-ading to a discriminatory system.“This seems to be a classic case ofprofiteering by pharma compani-es and inequitable access of thisdrug,” she said.

Shivkumar Utture, who headsthe Mumbai chapter of the Indi-an Medical Association, said hisorganisation has received 40 do-ses of the drug from corporatesto be given to public hospitals.

AIIMS Ready to Carry OutAutopsy to Study VirusNEW DELHI: The All India Insti-tute of Medical Sciences (AI-IMS) is set to study how long co-ronavirus can remain in the bo-dy and whether dead bodies ofCovid-19 patients transmit theinfection, as it plans to conductthe first ever autopsy soon on

the body of a person whodied of coronavirus, re-ports Teena Thacker.

“We are coordinating formedical research autopsy.The clinical findings of thecase along with various la-

boratory reports and imaginingswill have to be studied before weconduct a autopsy,” said Dr Sud-hir Gupta, who is the head of de-partment of forensic medicineand toxicology, AIIMS.

The findings are crucial as theparanoia that surrounds hand-ling the body is disturbing andwill clear the air, said Gupta.

“There are restrictions for therelatives to abide. The dead bo-

dy is given in a plastic bag. Oncewe know the behaviour of Co-vid-19 infection in the body, wewill be able to put to rest manysuch questions,” he said.

India has decided an invasivetechnique should not be adoptedfor forensic autopsy in Covid de-ath cases as mortuary staff areexposed to dangerous healthrisks due to organ fluids and se-cretions even after taking pre-cautions, say the new standardguidelines. According to the gui-delines, an informed consentand other ethical aspects such asconfidentiality and religioussentiments should be addressedas per the specific objectives andmethodology of the study whileconducting the autopsy.

“The research study would beconducted after the proper ethi-cal clearance from the respecti-ve institute and as per the estab-lished research guidelines ofICMR,” say the guidelines.

SECI said it would contestthe plausibility of invokingthe force majeure clause.“Even if there is such anevent, its effect is continuingfor a period of more thanthree months,” SECI said in acommunication to the com-pany, as per the petition.

“There is no certain timelinefor resumption of servicesand normalcy. When thingsreturn to normal, cost invol-ved in the project will also bevery high, making the projectunviable,” one of the peopleinvolved in the matter told ET,speaking on the condition ofanonymity.

New Delhi: The companythat had offered to supply thecheapest solar power in Indiahas sought to cancel the pro-ject, citing uncertainty follo-wing the Covid-19 pandemic.

ACME Solar had won the 600MW project in Rajasthan byoffering to sell power at ̀̀ 2.44 aunit, in an auction conductedby Solar Energy Corp of India(SECI) in 2018. It has now app-roached the Central Electrici-ty Regulatory Commission,seeking to invoke the ‘forcemajeure’ clause to prevent SE-CI and Power Grid Corp of In-dia, with which it has a trans-mission pact, from encashingbank guarantees. Both SECIand Power Grid have opposedthe move.

The petition seeks termina-tion of the contracts due to the"outbreak of Covid-19 and itsadverse impact on manufactu-ring facilities of suppliers sin-ce December 2019, includinglockdown in China and In-dia.” The petition also citeddelays in land acquisition. EThas seen a copy of the petition.

Mumbai: JSW Energy hasput on hold its plan to acquireGMR Kamalanga Energythree months after announ-cing the deal, citing uncerta-inties in the wake of the Co-vid-19 pandemic and subse-quent lockdown.

“We are putting this deal onhold for the time being becau-se there are a lot of uncerta-inties in the sector,” Pras-hant Jain, chief executive of-ficer of JSW Energy, said.

The power generation com-pany of the Sajjan Jindal gro-up had in February said itwill buy the 1,050 mw Kama-langa project located in Odis-ha for `̀5,321 crore from thehighly indebted GMR Group.

“We had entered into a defi-nitive agreement which wassubject to certain conditions-…the fulfilment of these con-ditions are on hold because ofuncertainties,” Jain told ET.

steep 58% decline in consolidated netprofit at ̀̀ 32.5 crore for the fourthquarter ended March 2020, amidst theCovid-19 pandemic and subsequentnationwide lockdown which resulted inrestaurants and malls shutting down,reports Our Bureau. JFL had posted netprofit of ̀̀ 77.4 crore in the correspon-ding year-ago quarter, it said in a BSEfiling. Revenue from operations rose4% to ̀̀ 908.7 crore during the quartercompared to ̀̀ 872.8 crore in thecorresponding quarter last fiscal.

BENGALURU Harley-Davidson Inc is reopeningits factories this week atlower production rates and

sending dealers a narrower range ofmotorcycles, the Wall Street Journalreported on Wednesday. The USmotorcycle maker, which closed its USplants in March due to the coronavirusoutbreak, may not ship any additionalnew motorcycles this year to about70% of its 698 dealers in the country,the report said.The company did notimmediately respond to Reutersrequest for comment. Harley's annualdealer meet, usually held in August,will now take place early next year.

The SC will take a call on whetherthe telecom department and theoperator can negotiate on adjus-ted gross revenue (AGR) paymentmodalities. VIL has been hit mostin this AGR crisis.

New Delhi|Mumbai: VodafoneIdea (VIL) said its call to bunch 22circles into 10 clusters is a step to-wards a “new operating model,which is leaner, agile and morecost-efficient to address customerneeds”.

Analysts say this sends out a clearsignal that the cash-strapped telcois preparing to stay and fight in themarket.

“VIL is moving from circle-basedoperating model to a cluster-basedapproach and is starting consoli-dation of operations to 10 clusterswith a sharper focus on business,”the telco said in an email statementto ET. “This new operating modelwill mark a quantum jump in ope-rational intensity, leading tostronger competitive positioningfor VIL in the market place.”

कोणताच पIरणाम िदसून न आNयाने अखेर नोटीस दे�याची कारवाई सु� झाली. यानंतर काही डॉ टर तसेच 34णालयांनी आपNया सेवा सु� क?Nया. 2यांनी आपNया सेवा अQाप बंद ठ"वNया आहेत, �यांJयावर कारवाईचे आदेश देतानाच जे आपली सेवा सु� करतील, �यांना पािलक?|ारे पीपीई िकट दे�याचे िनदxश आयु तांनी िदले आहेत. आयु तांनी बुधवारी मंुबईतील सवA २४ सहाqयक आयु तांशी *)हडीओ कॉ<फर*<संग|ारे संवाद साधला.

उडाली. या पा�वAभूमीवर पािलका RशासनाकडCन यशोधन सोसायटीला इमारतीचा एक मजला मजला सील करीत असNयाचे कळवले आहे. सोसायटी Rशासनाने सील क?लेNया भागात बाहेरील )य तीला Rवेश देऊ नये, Rभावी िनजFतुकीकरण करावे, गदY क� नये, रिहवाशांनी मा+कचा वापर करावा, असे िनदxश दे�यात आले आहेत. पािलक?Jया नवीन िनयमावलीनुसार करोना 34ण आढळNयानंतर संपूणA िब*Nडdग सील न करता संबंिधत मजला, संबंिधत भाग सील कर�यात येत आहे. �यानुसार ही कायAवाही कर�यात आली आहे, असे पािलक?ने +पOट क?ले आहे.

R�येक Rशासकीय िवभागाने िकमान १०० खाटा ताwयात ^यायJया आहेत. तसेच उपलwध होणाXया खाटांपैकी १० ट क? खाटा या अितद�ता िवभागातील असणे आव�यक आहे, अशी मािहती पािलक?ने िदली.
