    From Our PrincipalWelcome to the 2011 2012 school year! I hope all of you enjoyed your summer break. Its great to be back! The first daof the school year is always marked by excitement and anticipation, an electricity you can feel in the air. This year was nexception! The staff and students are rested, revitalized and ready for the fun and hard work the new school year is sure bring.

    Please join me in welcoming our new gator staff members! Liz Westgate will teach kindergarten; she joins us from JohnMuir School. Desiree Barr will teach second grade; she joins us from Stocklmeir School. Ruth Wachob will teach third gradshe joins us from Sedgwick School. Michelle Kharrazi, a recent SJSU graduate, is our new Speech Pathologist. Additionasome of you may recognize Sarah Hastings, who is rejoining us to teach our fourth/fifth grade combination class. Our newstaff brings experience, skill, enthusiasm and a strong commitment to children. They are wonderful additions to ourexceptional staff at Garden Gate!

    It was a pleasure to see so many of you at the PTA sponsored continental breakfast on the first day of school! I was glad have the opportunity to chat with some of you on the grass area in front of the school. I hope that you had an opportunity tmeet some of the members and hear about the wonderful programs and events they help to sponsor at Garden Gate. Thenrich your childrens experiences at Garden Gate through the programs and activities they support. I hope that youconsider becoming a member of the PTA.     Hello Garden Gate Families,

    A warm Welcome to all of you who are new to Garden Gate, and a just as warmwelcome back to everyone else! I hope that you had a wonderful summer break.It was a pleasure to meet and talk to many parents at the Welcome Breakfast onthe first day of school and also at the Coffee with the Principal. Hopefully, you

    enjoyed these events as well! These are just a couple of the activities we haveplanned for this year we hope to meet and see you at our future events as well.

    I would like to thank the many volunteers who helped with our beginning of theyear activities. These events would not have been possible without your help.

    All the amazing students and their parents who helped us prepare the greenfolders.Sreejaya Thandayankandy who chaired a wonderful Welcome Back Staff Lunchand Meena Vijaykar who helped her organize it.Chitra Dhingra and Colleen Hagan who prepared for the Welcome Breakfast for

    everyone; all the volunteers who helped set up everything in the morning and allthe parent volunteers who worked at the PTA tables.Angelia Kan, Carolyn Young and many others who organized the Coffee with thePrincipal.

    SCRIP AND eScripScrip Gift Cards and eScrip are two fundraisingprograms that parents (also family and friends) can

    participate in to raise money for the PTA at NO COSTto the participant. Scrip gift cards can be purchasedon Tuesday afternoons between 1:15 - 1:45 p.m. andalso on Friday mornings between 7:45-8:15 a.m.Scrip is spent just like cash on everyday expenses.

    eScrip also provides an easy way to earn money forthe PTA. Participating merchants donate a percentageof purchases to the school. Parents (also family andfriends) should visit www.escrip.com to register theircredit/debit cards, Safeway Card, and PW SupermarketCard.     VISITING CAMPUSAll visitors on campus, whether entering classrooms asvolunteers or meeting with teachers, Must Sign In atthe office and obtain a visitors name tag when school

    is in session. For the safety of all, we need to knowwho is on the campus. The only exceptions are atstudent arrival and dismissal times. If you are takingyour child out of school for any reason, ALWAYS signyour child out from school through the office and thenback in when he/she returns.

    ABSENCES AND TARDIESAttendance and punctuality are importantin establishing good behaviors andbuilding responsibility in young children.Please ensure that your child is at schooleveryday and that they arrive on time. If

    your child will be absent, please call theattendance line promptly (252-5414, ext. 6). If yourchild arrives after 8:00 a.m. they must report to theschool office for a late slip before entering theclassroom. Under state law, three unexcusedabsences or tardies may be considered truancy.

    CELDT TESTING INFORMATIONThe Cupertino Union School District will administer the CELDT (California English Language Development Test) Auguthrough October 28, 2011. Based on your childs CELDT scores from last year, if their proficiency is limited, withdrawntransitional, your child will be included in the annual CELDT test at their school. A letter will be sent home with your chprior to the testing date at your school. The initial CELDT will be given to kindergarten students whose primary languaon the Home Language Survey is a language other than English. The test consists of four skills: Listening, SpeakinReading and Writing. Students in grades K8 are tested in all four areas. You will receive the official results after Janu2012. If you have any questions, please contact your school office.

    FITNESS TESTING RESULTSThe FITNESSGRAM assessment is given to all students in grades 5 and 7 each year and strives to provide accurate areliable information about your child's level of physical fitness. Results from Spring 2011 are being sent home this mon

    through the middle school sites. FITNESSGRAM uses health-related criteria called Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZ) determine students' overall physical fitness. It suggests areas for improvement when appropriate. HFZ are not based class averages or any other peer comparisons. They are criterion-referenced standards based on how much fitnessneeded for good health. The standards are set specifically for boys and girls of different ages using the best availaresearch. The report defines the recommended range of fitness for each test measure. If your child's score falls within tHFZ, it means they have achieved the recommended level of fitness for their age. All students should be encouragedcontinue to practice and improve their skills as an important step to lifelong fitness and overall good health.

    HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT PREVIEWChildren need to acquire accurate information about the growth and development of boys and girls so that they can maresponsible decisions. In keeping with this concept, the Cupertino Union School District promotes informed, responsiaction through instruction, which supports the home in this important area of human behavior. Parents will be provided

    opportunity to preview a sampling of the Grade 5 Human Growth and Development videos that will be shown to yochildren. The previews are scheduled for two nights Monday, October 3 or Monday, October 10, 6:00 7:30 p.m. Collins Elementary School Guided Learning Center, 10300 N. Blaney Avenue, Cupertino. Children are not recommendto attend no childcare provisions are available.
