*LEGION RIDERS*

Congratulations to our newly elected officers and Thank you to those who have served honorably and stepped aside to let others serve. July is here and so will be the 4th and the heat. Our Christmas in July ride this year had to be changed due to the virus. This year we will be going to Patriots Villa on Rivers Ave instead of the VA. The ride will be July 19th leaving the post around 1100.

Our July meeting will be on the 18th at 0930. Hope to see you there. Lastly, it has been an honor being the director this past year and I look forward to helping the next director.

Ride Safe,

Mike McCann

Past Director, Chapter 166

*40 & 8 REPORT*

The installation of Officers has been completed and we are ready to start the new year.

Grande Promenade is July 17th & 18th right here in Goose Creek at Post 166. Now would be an excellent time to get involved at the Grand level.

This month’s promenade will be busy with events to be discussed. We have the Hillbilly Wreck in August and Nationale Promenade in September as well as our picnic. The new membership cards should be in so it would be a Golden opportunity to get your new cards.

I would still like to see more participation in our Voiture activities in the coming year. This is your Voiture, Help make it all it can be.

Shipmates;

Another heads up for your info. As a lot of you know, we are still in the process of reopening Post 166. We are doing burgers and hot dogs every Saturday right now. We still are under guidelines at 50% occupancy, and still under Governors request to wear masks,. and use social distancing whenever feasible. The infection rate has risen in South Carolina, but not like Florida and Georgia and other states. Please be courteous to all and continue to wear masks. We can keep the rates of infection lower, and be able to come out of this safely. Check on other shipmates, and let us know if there is anything we can do. Will get back on track with crew commitments as soon as we can. During elections, Don Pace was elected as Post Commander, I was elected as Post Judge Advocate, so if we can help forward TCS ideas/ suggestions for Post improvements or pro-grams, let us know.

*HONOR GUARD*

It has been a hard last few months for all of us. Your Honor Guard has been on lockdown just as most of you. Getting back to our new normal is underway as we have been able to provide Full Military Honors for some of our departed Veterans in the past few weeks. Also, we were able to Honor all those who died while in de-fense of our Country at the Post 166 Memorial Day Ceremony held at the Post. After that, we were able to participate in the Post's Flag Disposal Ceremony to make sure worn and tattered Flags were given the respect they deserved in accordance with the Flag Code.

Make no bones, we are still looking for new members, happy to talk to anyone who has even the slightest bit of interest in knowing what we do, why we do it, or any other information. You don’t have to feel bad if you figure out it’s not for you after you get your info, but at least you will know why we serve the families of the departed. Those families seek us out because they feel deep in their hearts their loved one earned the right to Military Honors and they don’t know where else to turn. We will do what we can to provide these honors as long as we have the members, equipment and funds to keep doing so. Thanks to all those who send in dona-tions to us and support us in other ways. If you need more information or to send a donation c/o a deceased Military Veteran, please send to: Honor Guard of American Legion Post 166 - 116 Howe Hall Road - Goose Creek, SC 29445. We are a 501c3 organization of volunteers at the Post and will happily provide you a tax receipt should you request one.

*NEWS LETTER*

This is the first hardcopy of the news letter that is being mailed out since the Post had to close down in mid-March and finally was allowed to reopen on May 30th . The reason no hard copies were mail out was lack of funding. The Post had to go out and ask for donations to the Building Operating Fund just to keep the lights on and pay it’s bills. For all of you that donated to the Building Operating Fund. “I THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN”

The Post is still trying to recover from being shut down and is still accepting donation to this fund to those who care to do so.

Cost of sending out hard copies of the news letter each month is about $300.00 which comes out of the Post operating fund which monies come mostly from you the Post Member coming to the Post and eating and so-cializing. The Post is still asking you who receive a “HARD COPY” to please sign up to receive your news letter by e-mail.

Finally I want to “THANK” everyone who helped me during my year as Post Commander, we accomplished a lot and the Post has a bright future but it can only happen if “YOU THE MEMBER PARTICIPATE”.

Tim Burnside, Past Post Commander

*ASK THEM*

Legionnaires,

Eligibility in the American Legion is now open to any Veteran who served one (1) day active duty since

December 7, 1941. This means there are a lot of Honorable or Medical Discharged Veterans and Active Du-ty Military personnel that can join.

All you have to do is “ASK THEM”.

IMPORTANCE OF OUR American Legion, America’s Largest Supporter of Veterans

This organization is the nation’s largest and most powerful organization of, and for, our veterans and their families. Today, we count 2 million members who support our communities in more than 12,000 posts across this country and worldwide.

Many great improvements for veterans and their families and communities have occurred since its begin-nings in 1919.

We ushered in the VA system, drafted the GI Bill and the Post-911 GI Bill. We helped draft dozens of health-care benefits for veterans and many programs to provide civilian careers to them after their discharge from service.

We work every day for U.S. service men and women, recognized as leading in transition assistance from military to civilian life, aid in careers, education, childcare and more. We also involve ourselves to help sup-port our local communities with focus on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.

Examples are: VA-trained volunteers for many community service sectors, and more than $1.5 million raised annually to assist our VA hospitals in local communities. American Legion Baseball where our favorite American Pastime provides healthy, wholesome activity for our youth…. Some moving on to Major League Teams. Charities fundraisers held to secure scholarships for children; monies raised to give support and com-fort to our wounded service-members; and helping provide aid for victims of natural disasters.

In my own local position of Post Service Officer, I strive to help many of our veterans with attaining the mil-itary benefits due them, whether help with medical and disability needs, or whatever aids they require to help maintain a decent lifestyle.

I feel very honored and humbled to be a part of this challenge.

Dennis Shelters

Post Service Officer

*SICKNESS & DISTRESS* It has been brought to our attention that this Post doesn’t send cards when some of our members go to the hospital, or worse yet when one of our members moves on to the afterlife. Folks, as hard as we try, the Legion family is huge, we have over 1,400 members here at the Post. We here at American Legion Post 166 need you the member to contact us when someone goes into the hospital, or worse yet, passes on. This can be done by phone (843) 553-5454 or e-mail at: [email protected]. This way we can get the word out to the rest of the Post. Please help us keep track of the well-being of our membership.
