Volume 12, No. 38June 09, 2013

by Phil Minshull Rome, Italy, June 6—There had been a

few hints that Usain Bolt was not quite 100% prior to his arrival in The Eternal City. Like a lackluster 10.09 in his 100 debut for the year

in the Cayman Islands and stories of a sore hammy, and Justin Gatlin seized the chance to make what he called beforehand “a state-ment.”

Gatlin, the Olympic bronze medallist be-hind Bolt (and Yohan Blake), was able to re-cover from a less-than-perfect start to edge in

to stay with your race pattern and put it to-gether. Tonight, the end of the race was more of a blur; I was just concentrating on getting my strides down.”

Unusually, Bolt had a good start and was

the fastest to react to the gun, getting out of his blocks in 0.143, but looked rather aver-age by his own stellar standards and was nonplussed by his failure to deliver on a track where just 12 months before he had set a meet record of 9.76.

“I had a nice start, that was ridiculous,

— Gatlin Shocks Bolt In Rome DL —front of the Jamaican at 30 meters and then held his form in the second half of the race as Bolt tried to fight back but had little of his usual power over the final 50.

The ’04 gold medalist stopped the clock at

9.94 with the man who succeeded him in ’08 and ’12 just 0.01 behind, and took a victory in Rome eight years after his last one in ’05.

“I felt good. I put my race together. I was really good at starting and I’ve been working on conditioning and making the middle part of my race stronger.” said Gatlin. “You have

a perfect start and then I just cropped off. I think it was the perfect start that threw my game off,” reflected a disappointed Bolt.

“I have to do more strength work, I guess. I think it needs just some time to get it all back together. At the end, it was not just me. At least, I got under 10 seconds!”

There was another upset at the first Euro-pean leg of this year’s IAAF Diamond League in the women’s 200 when Ivory Coast’s Uni-versity of Miami alum Murielle Ahouré ran a 22.38 NR and left Olympic champion Al-lyson Felix a distant 2nd in 22.64.

Ahouré, 6th behind Felix in the London furlong, got into her running very quickly and was a stride clear of Felix coming off the bend before accelerating again.

There were three world-leading marks in the meet, all on the track.

Ethiopia’s Mohammed Aman fulfilled his role as the man to watch in the 800, sprint-ing clear of rest of the field over the final 150 meters to win in 1:43.61. Behind him, the emerging French talent and former European Junior champion Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, just 21, clocked a personal best of 1:43.91.

Natasha Hastings pushed the pace over the first 300 meters of the women’s 400 and had a slight lead coming into the home straight off the second bend but Botswana’s reigning world champ Amantle Montsho got her tactics right and won in 49.87.

Francena McCorory followed her home in a personal best of 50.05 as Hastings faded slightly down the home straight to finish 3rd in 50.63.

Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet lead at the bell in the 5000 and tried to run a away from his compatriot Yenew Alamirew down the back straight and around the last bend; but the latter came around the outside as the pair entered the homestraight and had the stron-ger finish to win in 12:54.95, the sub-13:00 run this year, while Gebrhiwet finished 2nd in 12:55.73.

There were also good wins by U.S. athletes Dawn Harper-Nelson and Brittney Reese, who took the 100 hurdles and long jump in 12.60 and 22-11¼ (6.99).

In the field events, the best performances came from the throwers.

Croatia’s Sandra Perković notched up her third successive DL win with a heave of 223-11 (68.25) and was almost 4 meters bet-ter than anyone else.

Germany’s Christina Obergföll was equally impressive in the javelin, despite be-

ing tired after flying in from the west coast of the United States after winning in Eugene last Saturday, and sent her spear out to 218-0 (66.45) in the second round.

There was another German victory in the men’s pole vault when Raphael Holzdeppe equalled his personal best of 19-4¾ (5.91) before unsuccessfully going for a national re-cord 19-9 (6.02).

What Are All Those Symbols? We realize that there is a lot of material to absorb in our agate (“agate” is journalese for small-type results), so let’s see if we can’t clarify it a bit for you.A combination of numbers and letters in parentheses, such as “9, x W” would mean tha the person had moved to No. 9 on the all-time world list, with a performance outside the top 10. Had it say, been the No. 9 performance, the notation would have been 9, 9 W.You might also find something like “x, 6 A”. The x in the first position means the mark is not a PR, but the performance is No. 6 in U.S. history. We note all-time list positions for World (W), U.S. (A), College (C), Juniors (WJ or AJ) and High School (HS).We also denote yearly list leaders for the World (WL), U.S. (AL), College (CL; Division i only) and High School (HS).
