Our goal was to listen and have a conversation with PGA Professionals, facilities, stakeholders, and management companies on what is going on at facilities in terms of player development. During this time I realized how im- portant it was for me to get out and see our PGA Professionals. Like many of you, it is so easy to get caught up in keeping your head above water. With so much indirect communication via email and social media, it is easy to have surface level relation- ships. The time the staff spent with 15 facilities really put things into focus for me. As your executive director, I must be better at getting out and seeing you at the place you call home for the majority of your day. I have made a commitment to do that more so I am looking forward to seeing as many of you and building a more mean- ingful relationship. The second wakeup call was from a dear friend of all of ours and longtime Gateway PGA and PGA of America Rules Official, Bob Shogren. As many of you know, Bob has been asked to serve as a PGA Rules official for the Sr PGA Championship at the end of the month. This distinction is so special because Bob is not a member of the PGA of America or a traveling rules official for the PGA Tour. On the morn- ing of the final matches of the Gateway PGA Match Play event, Bob informed me that his status of fulfilling this lifelong dream has been caught in a surprising diag- nosis. While officiating a collegiate event, Bob noticed a lump just under his ear. After several tests he received the bad news that the lump was cancerous and it was additionally in his tonsils. Shogie is still going through multiple tests and he knows that he needs to have surgery to remove the cancer. As you can imagine, this is dif- ficult for him on so many levels. I ask that you keep our friend in your thoughts and prayers. I think you are all with me in saying that we know Bob is tough and he has to focus on beating this awful disease. Bob is as PGA as any of us and wears his logo so proud. He served me a wakeup call that the road of life has so many unex- pected turns. At the end of the day it is all about relationships, family, and friends. When life and work gets to be so busy that you lose focus on those things, a turn can happen that brings us back to the reality that we should never be too busy to work on relationships. I look forward to helping Bob beat this so that he is ready to officiate the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club! 74TH SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY KITCHENAID UPDATE

Here we are, less than one month away from the Gateway Section and Bellerive Country Club hosting the best players in the world over the age of 50. Construction is well underway, the zoysia is greening, and the final preparations are being made for YOUR Major Championship.

An amazing field has taken shape for the 74th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, inclu-sive of some of the most legendary figures in the game of golf, like our current Ryder Cup Captain, and Missouri native, Tom Watson; former Masters Champion and perennial fan favorite Fred Couples; your 1992 PGA Champion at Bellerive Nick Price; 4-time Senior PGA Champion Hale Irwin; Champions Tour rookies Steve Elkington and Rocco Mediate; Tom Kite, Tom Lehman, Mark Calcavecchia, Mark O’Meara, Kenny Perry, Jay Haas, Bernhard Langer, Hal Sutton, Curtis Strange, John Cook and MANY more…

On April 22nd, defending Senior PGA Champion, Roger Chapman, visited St. Louis for the Champion-ship’s Media Day. Roger and his wife Cathy, spent a whirlwind two days attending not only Media Day at Bellerive, but also immediately flying to Harbor Shores for a series of events commemorating his victory there.

As part of their trip to St. Louis, the Chapmans took time to visit with some of the kids participating in PGA REACH programming. They were humbled by the experience, and were very encouraged at the great work that has already gone on surrounding PGA REACH and the benefiting organizations – Urban K-Life, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis. We very much look forward to having Roger and Cathy back in St. Louis later this month.

As you all know by now, the Gateway Section will be well represented in the Championship field. Current Section members JC Anderson and Bob Gaus qualified through the Professional National Championship to be able to play at Bellerive.

Additionally, the PGA of America granted Special Exemptions into the field to two VERY deserving golf professionals, former Bellerive head professional Jerry Tucker, and current Bellerive Director of Instruc-tion Brian Fogt.

On behalf of the Championship staff, best of luck to these four professionals as they compete for the Al-fred S. Bourne Trophy!

In the meantime, please encourage your members, guests, clients, and friends to come out to Bellerive to support, attend and enjoy the experience at YOUR Championship. It will be another 5 years before the PGA of America hosts an event in this Section, so let’s make this one the best Major Championship ever contested. I know that has been the goal of our staff and your Section leadership since these Cham-pionships were announced in May 2011.

See you at Bellerive! Jason Mengel Championship Director

Roger Champman Prepares for the 74th Senior PGA Championship Presented by KitchenAid

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Roger Chapman spent several mo-ments Monday gazing at the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy during Media Day activities promoting the 74th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid. A defending champion has earned the right to get up close and personal with such an esteemed piece of silverware. Chapman's 2012 season was that year's most stunning story in golf, and the 53-year-old from Ascot, England was often emotional by the atten-tion. "It (winning) means everything to me," said Chapman, the first English-man to win the most historic and prestigious event in senior golf. "You just look at all the names on that trophy – Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino and Hale Irwin, all legends of the game. To be a part of that club is a proud moment for me and an honor." Chapman was making his first visit to Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, getting in a practice round for the Championship's debut in Mis-souri, May 21-26. Joining Chapman on the course were local and city community leaders, media, and PGA of America and KitchenAid executives. Next month, Bellerive becomes just the third club in the country to have hosted all four rotating men's professional major championships (the PGA Cham-pionship, Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open). "The year 2012 was a special year for my family and for me," said Chap-man. "I went to Benton Harbor with no thoughts about winning the event. I had played only one event on the European Senior Tour all year. It was just a wonderful experience. Then to come back and win the U.S. Senior Open at another wonderful course – Indianwood (in Lake Orion, Mich.) – a few weeks later was very special to me as well. It proved I wasn't a one-time wonder." Chapman said that enjoyed playing Bellerive, adding "it will certainly be a challenge when it's being played under Championship conditions." "Bellerive is an excellent course," said Chapman. "With the weather in the past week, it's not been a great time for it, but I'm sure that when it's time for the Championship in a couple of weeks, it will be in tip-top con-dition. I know my counterparts on the Senior European Tour are champ-

ing at the bit because they haven't played since last December." The PGA of America highlighted the Championship's impact on the local and state level, current and future initiatives set forth by PGA REACH. Also attending Championship Media Day was Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, PGA of America President Ted Bishop, Deb O'Connor, di-rector of Global Corporate Reputation & Community Relations for KitchenAid; and baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, president of Gateway PGA Foundation. "You see great local ties from both sides of the river and throughout the Show Me State for this event," said Gov. Nixon. "We are very proud to be hosting the Senior PGA Championship. We also are deeply appreciative of corporate sponsorship that we've gotten here. I can-not say enough about the people who have taken time to raise money for charity surrounding this event. "The PGA has been a true leader in this country, leaving towns better than they found them." Later in the day, Smith, Chapman and additional PGA of America officials visited with representatives of Urban K-Life, Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri to get a hands-on perspective at the different types of programs and initiatives that PGA REACH is offering Greater St. Louis. Tickets to the 74th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid are available by visiting srpga2013.com, or by calling 1-800-PGA-GOLF (742-4653).

GROWTH OF THE GAME

Foundation/Growth of the Game Committee Happy May Everyone! The Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid is arriving in a few short weeks. Over the past several months, the Foundation and Growth of the Game Committee have been hard at work making sure the members and facilities of the Gateway PGA can benefit from the im-pact of this Championship. Between the nation-wide marketing push from the PGA of America and the various events and activi-ties surrounding the Championship, thousands of St. Louis residents will be logging on to Get-GolfReady.com to learn more about this program and others offered near them. While the local and national staff are working very hard at promotions and educating the consumer of these golf opportuni-ties, it is imperative that these consumers have places to go to participate in programs like Get Golf Ready, PGA Sports Academy, adult group lessons, and more. THIS MEANS YOU! Registering any programs you run automatically shows your facility in a search query performed near your zip code. Facts You Should Know:

√ GetGolfReady.com receives over 30,000 hits per month | Active.com receives over 1 Million hits per year √ Active.com and GetGolfReady.com interface with each other – posting your programs on one means they are visi-

ble to the consumer on both √ You don’t need to be running a program called “Get Golf Ready” or “PGA Sports Academy”. If you are running

any kind of adult group lessons or junior programs, POST THEM! √ I am always available to help you register your facility, post programs, and answer questions.

You may be wondering what events and activities we have planned around the Championship that will hopefully attract new consumers. Between on-site and off-site activations, there will be two Family Fun Zones (golf taken away from the golf course to a large group of people who may not be golfers), an Executive Women’s Event, a Youth Clinic, Scan and Win kiosks throughout the grounds, and several news stories and print articles in the local media. What makes efforts like these even more successful is when Professionals get involved to help promote themselves. If you want to participate in one or all of these opportunities, note the event details and help needed, below. Please contact me with questions or to sign up.

T iger Wood's Ruling at The Masters The ruling was the topic of a lot discussion in the golf shop. I also received several phone calls and emails. In the end the Rules Committee at the Masters made the correct ruling. A lot of the controversy was caused by comments made by the media prior to all the facts coming out. On Friday His third shot hit the flagstick and bounced back into the water hazard. He chose to proceed by playing from where the previous stroke was played (Rule 26-1a). This option required him to drop a ball as near as possible to the spot where the previous stroke was played (Rule20-5). The Rules Committee received a phone call concerning the drop. While Tiger was still on the course the Committee reviewed television footage and determined, based on what they saw, there was no penalty. In effect the Committee made a ruling that he had not played a stroke from a wrong place and had not incurred a two stroke penalty. Woods was not informed of the concern or the ultimate ruling that was made prior to his completion of the round. He signed his scorecard and the score of six recorded for hole #15 corresponded with the score the Committee determined when they made the ruling. Later Tiger was interviewed on ESPN. Comments made during the interview revealed more facts. Tiger had appar-ently dropped the ball outside an area that would have been considered "as near as possible". This meant the Com-mittee had made an incorrect ruling. Saturday morning the Committee met with Woods. They reviewed what had transpired and discussed the situation with Tiger. The Committee determined the correction of an incorrect ruling must be made. Assessing the two stroke penalty incurred under Rules 26-1a and 20-7c. This cor-rection was made under the principle established in Decision 34-3/1. Rule 33-7 gives the Committee the authority to waive the penalty of dis-qualification for signing an incorrect scorecard because of the exceptional circumstances of an incorrect ruling. It should be clear however that if the Committee had not made a ruling prior to his completion of the stipulated round and Tiger signed his card he would have been disqualified. There was also a lot of misinformation about Rule 33-7. First it is not a new rule. Rule 33-7 has existed for over fifty years. Secondly, the waiving of the disqualification penalty in Decision 33-7/4, which was introduced two years ago, was not applicable in this case.

Central MO Classic Pro-Open #1 Bob Gaus Wins Regular & Senior Titles in Central MO Classic

Fresh off his 2012 Player of the Year Title, Bob Gaus of Tower Tee GC picked up right

where he left off firing a 3-under par round of 68 to capture the Central MO Classic at

The Cove GC. Gaus took home the top prize of $600

after a round which featured 4 birdies and one bogey.

JC Anderson was the only other player in red numbers

finishing at 1-under despite making 5 birdies on the

day. Brian Fogt and Mark Faulkner tied for 3rd at

Even. Adam Betz, Nash Haxel and Justin Auping fin-

ished 4 shots back at +1.

The Cove GC at The Lodge of the Four Seasons was in

great shape consider it was only a week ago that the

course had been blanketed with over 6 inches of snow.

A north breeze and damp conditions proved challeng-

ing to the field as the course play long for the event.

Gaus & Anderson both will continue their march to

prepare for the 2013 Sr. PGA Championship at Bellerive next month.

GPGA Match Play Championship Suhre Takes His First Match Play Title Mike Suhre would not let down in his run to his first ever Gateway PGA Match Play Champi-

onship title. Suhre faced off in his final match against six time GPGA Match Play Champion

and 2013 Sr PGA Championship contestant,

Bob Gaus. Gaus has stood in the way of many

Gateway PGA Professionals in their attenpt to

win a major - on this day, Suhre would not let

it happen. Both players traded birdies to begin

the opening stretch before settling down into a

great match. Gaus' putting carried him to com-

fortable wins in his previous matches. In his

final match, Suhre was able to make shots

when he needed and really only had one mis-

take all day. Suhre showed extreme calm down

the stretch where he held on to a 1up lead go-

ing into the 16th hole. It was at the 16th where Bob missed his first short putt all week. It

proved to be costly as Mike hit his tee shot on the 3 par 17th to 10'. Bob, needing a birdie and

a missed putt by Mike to stay alive, just missed the green. His next shot would be his last - a

hard lip out on a chip he had to make. From there Suhe closed things out with a two putt par.

The Gateway PGA Match Play Championship is a grueling three days of competition at a

great venue for the format. Annbriar Golf Course will yield some birdies but the elevation

changes and wind always play a factor. The sections top PGA Professionals and Apprentices

tee it up each year and the last one standing has proven it by beating some of the best profes-

sional players in the area. For full results from the 2013 Gateway PGA Match Play, click

For those of you who may still be interested in volunteering at the Senior PGA Championship at Bellerive we still have a few spots available. Below are a list of the times still available. Please call or email Lindsay Riley at [email protected] if you would like to register, as online registration has been closed. Information regarding parking, meals, uniforms, ect. will be sent out to all volunteers soon. If you registered for the Mercedes Benz tent you should have been notified that we no longer need to staff Golf Professionals in that area. Most of the profession-als for that area have been moved to another area, but if you haven’t contacted the office to ad-just your schedule please do so. It is up to each Professional to login and print out your sched-ule. If you are unable to work any of your shifts please notify the section office ASAP so that we can attempt to fill that spot. When checking your registration schedule keep in mind that if you are on the waitlist you will not be required to work unless notified of a cancellation. I know the registration process was confusing so please double check your status and scheduled times. We are still in great need of professionals to help out at the Consumer Events Saturday May 18th at Six Flags, Sunday May 19th at Busch Stadium, and Monday May 20th at the REACH youth clinic. Please consider joining us to teach golf in these fun filled family zones set up in conjunction with Senior PGA Championship. The St Louis golfing community has shown that they are excited about golf with unprecedented hospitality and ticket sales for the Champion-ship, come help us provide some fun golf experiences for them. Contact Ali Wells or Lindsay Riley if you are able to help out with any of the Consumer Events. Thank you to all of the Gateway Professionals who have dedicated their time in making this Championship possible.

G ateway PGA Golf Marathon has been pushed back to

August 1st-8th due to the rainy weather we have had here this spring. The Golf Day committee thought it would be beneficial, due to the lack of rounds at their courses, to allow more time for fundraising. Donations will now be accepted until mid August for Golf Marathon. If you have already scheduled time to play your 100 holes in May please feel free to keep that schedule. We realize everyone will not be able to play during the week of August 1-8th, but please plan to have your 100 holes completed by the deadline of August 8th. At this time we will also be

determining which professionals will be invited to play in the Pro-Am at Annbriar on Oct 7th. Good luck to everyone who is working hard to raise money for our chosen chari-ties. Please feel free to contact Lindsay Riley at the Gate-way Section office if you have any questions or concerns about PGA Golf Marathon.

Employment Corner

Over the last year or so you may have heard me speak about the importance of communicating your successes, your activities, and your challenges to your employer. Doing this on a regu-lar basis, once a week, twice a month, or monthly can make a big difference in how you are perceived, what you are accomplishing for your facility, and what your perceived value is. As the weather starts to cooperate and your business starts to build up again, you need to be diligent in regard to keeping track of what you, your programs, and your directed staff ac-

complish monetarily and operationally for your employer and the facility. This needs to be done every season! A great tool to use is an Executive Summary. This one-page fact sheet can be emailed to your employer on a regular basis and could show the following information; Weather Summary Recap of reporting period

Highlights of increased revenues, participation, etc. Performance of new programs Advertising or marketing successes Any positive content the employer should know

Successes Accomplishments in revenues, participation, staffing, etc. Recognition you have had in the community, etc. Quotes from customers, etc.

Challenges Shows you are meeting these challenges head-on and resolving them

Looking Ahead Upcoming events preparations List of priorities/tasks for the next period

Other Notes Staff successes

Please contact me by email and I will forward you a sample of this form for your use. Tying this all together at the end of the year is the next important step. By creating these reports you can digi-tally keep them and use them for your annual review and/or also use as information to put in your Professional Report. The PGA Professional Report is located on PGALinks by clicking here. (You can also view samples of a finished report here) Once accessed, you can keep the information saved and update it on your free time. Once complete, you can print out a very professional report of your activities for the year and present it to your employer as additional material for your annual review. Please contact me if you have any questions about this material or if you need any help with employment or ca-reer planning.

At this time of year, golfers face a difficult, if not impossible, task in avoiding the sun. As golfers, we should be aware of the potential risk and do everything we can to avoid future dam-age to our skin. Therefore, sun protection prod-ucts are a critical line of defense.

Skin cancer may not be everyone’s favorite top-ic, but pay attention to the statistics: It is the most common cancer in the world…more than 2 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, a good reminder for golf-ers to take the extra few minutes before each round to apply sunscreens, in order to prevent future skin problems that may keep them out of the game.

Really, the solution is that simple: wear sun-screen and reapply when needed. The good news is today’s products are non-greasy gels and sprays that won’t run, making them more golfer-friendly.

The following specific “sun safety tips” from the American Academy of Dermatology will further help to prevent damage to your skin:

Slather on sunscreen - put on sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.

Look for sunscreen that has a high sun pro-tection factor (SPF). Use a broad-spectrum sun-screen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, and has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or greater, even on cloudy days.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after you swim or sweat. Find one that states it’s wa-ter resistant for 40 to 80 minutes.

Wear protective clothing. Long-sleeve shirts and pants can help avoid the sun.

Wear a wide broad-brimmed hat and sun-glasses with UV protective lenses.

Stay in the shade whenever possible.

Be careful around water, sand and reflective surfaces.

Get your vitamin D from food, rather than sun.

Stay away from tanning beds. Tanning beds have harmful rays and may make your skin look older and can cause skin cancer.

Since May is Skin Cancer Detection and Preven-tion Month, it is a reminder to us to pay atten-tion and protect our skin whenever possible. In the meantime, get out, play golf and enjoy time in the sun – but only after you apply the sun-screen!
