Like many of you, moments happen in my professional and personal ca-

reer that help inspire me for the days, weeks, and months ahead. Perhaps

another way of putting it would be to say that sometimes you are able to

experience tangible progress to the point that it motivates you to take the

next step with an even greater purpose. The greater purpose is our PGA

Professionals and the standing of our brand and business in the com-

munity. Each one of you are entering such an extremely busy time at

your facilities and many of you don’t have any extra time to give to

your association. Like Ben says below in his article, it is not about asking for more time –

we welcome those that can get involved and encourage you to be part of what we do because

we can’t do it without your help. However, our role is to grow in the positive perception and

to point back at what you do for the game at your facilities and what you stand for outside of

those doors. By being the best PGA Professional at XYZ facility you help to verify and per-

petuate the message we are giving on each and every stage we are fortunate to take.

Tangible evidence of our brand growing is transpiring across all of the business functions we

service at the Gateway PGA. We have been put in a great position because of the leadership

within our section and the drive of our team members. Our razor thin margin for error with

the financials has started to ease and it has made way for greater investments into our mem-

ber programs. Our stock in the community continues to rise because of events like the Ozzie

& Friends Concert. Events like these not only allow for shoulder rubbing with the who’s

who in the celebrity and corporate world but it also opens eyes to the general public on what

we are as an association. Our annual Women’s Golf Day presented by Callaway Golf and

Michelob Ultra sold out in 2 weeks with 190 women coming to The Quarry at Crystal

Springs on June 1! In addition, we are investing in our tournament program and have put

meaning back in our Players Championship that is a free invitation with a guaranteed purse

for those that make it. Nearly 70 PGA Professionals competed in our first point event of the

year which is evidence that competition and playing still rings as important to our

membership.

Instead of making phone calls, I am receiving phone calls to talk about our brand, our PGA

Professionals, and the important role we play in the community. Tangible proof in progress

is what continues to drive me and I am not aware of any current ceiling that exists for us. I

continue to be inspired by the friendships, your talents, and what we all can do to positively

grow the business and perception of golf. It is with respect and understanding that not all of

our PGA Professionals are in a good situation or a job that matches their skill set. However,

we continue to work hard to try and bring new players to the game, elevate the perception of

your work, and provide meaningful education and playing opportunities for your continued

growth and enjoyment.

FROM THE OFFICERS DESK

This column may read, at first, like it is all about me. By the end of reading this column, it

should be evident that it is about you and our Section. It was about this time in 2012 that I

decided to vet the possibility of running for Secretary of the Gateway PGA. I first discussed

this idea with my family, knowing I needed their support if I were to attempt to undertake this

endeavor. Second, I confided in a few of my PGA Brethren and asked for their honest

feedback about me as a potential candidate. (If my friends didn’t think I should run, then I

surely had to think twice). Third, and equally important, I spoke to the owners of Persimmon

Woods, knowing I needed their support as well. By placing my name on the ballot, I was in-

herently stating that I was prepared to make a multi-year commitment, and with a busy career, I needed to know they

were without reservations. Finally, I needed to make sure my personal reasons for running were the right reasons,

not the wrong ones. It is up to each candidate to decide for him/herself what those reasons are. For me, since regis-

tering as an Apprentice in 1997 with The PGA of America, I have always been committed to elevating the public

perception of the PGA Professional. We are the leaders in the Golf Industry and we should promote it. As a Board

Member I knew I could undoubtedly make an impact in elevating our status in a manner that transcended the 192

acres on which Persimmon Woods resides. I knew I could help address (on a collective effort with our Board) the

ongoing challenge of allocating our limited financial resources in the most effective manner as well as helping to

provide traction to our collective, fiduciary responsibility we have to grow the game of golf.

Each of you could add a litany of additional items that are equally important. I promised you in 2012 that I would

never ask you for more of your time, and I will not break that promise. That being said, if you are so inclined to take

the initiative to run for office, I eagerly volunteer you my time to answer your questions, as long as you know that I

do not profess to have all the answers. I pledge to help provide you with whatever insight I am able to, with regard

to what you could expect if you were to have the privilege I so humbly was rewarded with, serving you, my fellow

PGA Professionals.

For more information about running for office this fall, please do not hesitate to contact me, one of our Board

Members or the Section Office. I can be reached at (636) 300-5703 or [email protected].

Be well,

Ben

ASSISTANTS CORNER We are really looking forward to a wonderful day at The Missouri Bluffs on Monday, May 19

as we raise money for the National Car Rental Assistants Championship. I am happy to show

in this report our current team list. I hope to see you on the course!

Justin Rose had a two stroke penalty rescinded prior to the start of the final round of The

Tournament Players Championship. He addressed a chip on the eighteenth hole. He backed

off and consulted playing partner Sergio Garcia. They also saw a replay on the big screen near

the green. They determined the ball had not moved.

Tour officials reviewed the video and determined the ball had moved. They told Justin he

needed to add two penalty strokes, the general penalty for Rule 18, before he signed his

card. He would have incurred a stroke penalty under 18-2b Ball Moving After Address but

since he had not replaced the ball he incurred the two stroke penalty. This is covered in the footnote below the Gen-

eral Penalty statement.

The Committee later realized they had not taken into account the new Decision 18/4 that was added January 1, 2014.

The determination that the ball had moved was through the use of sophisticated technology (HD and slow motion).

The movement of the ball could not reasonably be discerned by the naked eye. Therefore the determination made by

Justin was deemed to be conclusive. The officials informed Rose of the reversal prior to him starting play of the

fourth round.

Employment “Chips” Employment Chips! – Please enjoy

this “Gateway Employment Chips”

section of your email newsletter.

Every month I will be adding to the

subjects of these “brief” articles and

hoping to inspire your thought

process regarding your

employment and/or your facility.

Please use and expand on the

information to make your

employment more successful!

BE VISIBLE!!!

When working with an employer on posting a Head

Professional, Director of Golf or General Manager

position, the employer has lamented to me on numerous

occasions their previous employee was lacking in the

visibility area of their job. When I press the employer to

explain, they simply say, he or she (the employee) was

just not VISIBLE!

I realize expectations are sometimes unrealistic when it

comes to being visible. This begs the question to the

employer, “When do I need to be at the club or what are

your expectations for me”? Start the dialogue

today before it becomes a problem. If the employer

isn’t going to give you direction, here are some ideas

to potentially think about.

Do you make a “bank run” daily? When are you doing

it? Is it possible to have someone else do it for you?

Are the errands you run necessary?

Are you “above” answering the phone or checking

people in or being at the counter from time to time?

Do you ever meet/greet people in the parking lot when

they arrive? There is no better time to make a positive

impression than when a member/customer arrives at

the facility.

What are you doing for your Ladies groups?

“Delegating”? Make sure you are available and treat this

as an opportunity to be seen.

Are you there only to “hand out the awards”? Make sure

this doesn’t become a habit! Members do notice this

phenomenon!

Do you ever start groups on the first tee? The banter and

pleasantries exchanged can be fun and show you care.

Do you make runs around the course? Make the run not

necessarily just for pace of play reasons. Maybe have

your clubs with you and play a few holes with a group.

Do make an effort to “work the range” from time to time.

Offering swing tips and timely advice can go a long way

in improving your stock at the facility.

I know there are many more ideas that some of you are

doing to be visible. Make a concerted effort this year to

increase your visibility at your facility- it could make a

difference!

Friends, family and clients have increasingly expressed an interest in wearable technology for fitness.

Most technology of this kind is worn on the wrist. While attending the American College of Sports

Medicine (ACSM) Fitness Summit Conference last month, I had the opportunity to explore new tech-

nologies being used to track, measure, encourage and motivate people to-

ward fitness.

I spoke with a friend who was wearing a Nike Loop. Trendy? Oh, yes. He

said that was one reason he wears it! But he also said it makes him aware

of sitting too long, not drinking enough water and also helps him measure

steps, movement and more.

The success stories are out there: Another individual I know has been wearing a

Fitbit Flex wristband—which helps you set goals for movement, calorie intake

and also measures your sleep cycle—for several months and has lost 20 pounds.

Obviously, with the variety of devices available you’ll need to narrow down your

goals. For instance, what exactly do you want to measure—steps? Calories? Heart

rate? Sleep? Along with cost, you might also want to consider features such as

battery life, how the device feels on your wrist and how the reminder alarms func-

tion, along with the capability for unique apps. Should you get a waterproof device? One with a

screen? Some of the devices allow you to “friend” with others and compare notes.

After reviewing many of these devices, I’ve concluded people who are into fitness probably don’t

need a reminder to move, hydrate and breathe. But most of us could use all the help we can get to stay

motivated for fitness. Anytime we are feeling better and in better shape physically and mentally it can

only improve our golf game. If technology can give your fitness plan a boost, there’s no doubt a device

is available to meet your needs. Go exploring!

Championship

Mike Suhre of Oakbrook GC captured his 2nd straight Match Play Championship at Annbriar GC. Suhre defeated 2013 Gateway PGA Player of the Year Bob Gaus

for the second year in the Championship-Match. Both players came out firing and birdied to halve the 2nd hole. Suhre wasn't done yet though as he went on to eagle #5 and then follow that up with birdies on #6 and #7 to go 3 up. He then made his only bogey of the day on #8 but came right back with a birdie at #9 to make the turn at 3 up. After halves at 10 and 11, 3 birdies in a row at 13, 14, and 15, were enough to seal the deal at 5 and 3. Gaus was 3 under at the time, while Suhre finished up 8 under par through 15 holes. In the semi-final matches, Gaus topped JC

Anderson 5 & 3, while Suhre beat Brian Fogt 2 & 1. It was the first time that the top 4 seeds had all advanced to the semi-final round.

Jason Traeder of TNT Golf Cars with Champion Brian Fogt Fogt Sweeps Season Opener at Persimmon Woods

Bellerive CC Teaching Professional Brian Fogt came out firing shooting an impressive 5-under par round of 66 to capture the first Player of the Year

Point Event at Persimmon Woods GC. Fogt, playing the 6700 yard, par 71 layout, competed in both the Regular & Senior Divisions and his score was good enough for victories over a large field of competitors.

In the Regular Division, Fogt claimed a 2 shot

victory over the 57 player field, with Jeff Schmidt &

Ryan Roy tying for runner-up honors with 3-under

par 68's. Mike Tucker was 4th with 69 and Mike

Suhre rounded out the top 5 with a round of 70.

The Senior Division boasted a field of 19 players

and Brian's 66 gave him a 4-stroke win over

Persimmon Woods Charlie Stock who finished at

1-under par 70. Stock’s impressive score beat his

age by 3 and Nash Haxel of The Quarry at Crystal

Springs finished 3rd with an even par 71. CLICK
