What a difference a little sunshine and warmer temperatures make! I cautiously say that Spring has arrived because we all know how fast things can change in the Gateway. I am excited to get the season underway and I am thankful for all of the Gateway PGA
Professionals who have worked with our team here at the Section Office. As President Schwent mentions in his article – the amount of members getting involved is really impressive.
As I mentioned a few articles ago, the offseason is where the preparation happens – the section is no different. I am inspired and energized when we get a group of PGA Professionals together with the goal of serving you better. Expect big things this year from each of our committees and remember it is never too late to get involved. At the tail end of planning for Junior Golf we were all hit with a surprise. Alex Anderson accepted a position with Taylor Made Golf as an Assistant Sales Repre-sentative. Every change brings the environment for new thought and opportunity. I want to thank Alex for her incredible service to the Section and to the Junior Program. She really has set the bar high and instituted some practices that have grown the program. With that said, we have welcomed a great new member to our team, Michael Brown. As you will see in the newsletter below, Michael is a PGA Member with a proven track record of service. We have the good fortune of having Alex on board until the end of the month so that Michael can have a smooth transition. Please take a moment to congratulate both Alex and welcome Michael to the team. Last, I would like to encourage all of our members to register for the upcoming Spring Membership Meeting & Quad Pro. We are going to kick the year off in a special way with lots of exciting announcements. We have Jeffrey Kreafle, GM of Bellerive Country Club, as our key note speaker and he will be joined by Ellen Port, and our recipients of the 2013 Folds of Honor Foundation Scholarship. In addition, half of the day will be dedicated to break-out sessions with topics that should be extremely relevant to you and your facility. We have to have a good weather day for golf as last year put nearly a foot of snow in our way! I hope to see as many of you as possible at Forest Hills on Monday, March 31. All the best

FROM THE OFFICERS DESK
The Fall Meeting ended with a plea from me to get involved. I am happy to say that thanks
to some great programming by Josh and his team I have seen more of my fellow professionals this
winter than ever before. My compliments to Dennis Biedenstein and Ed Schwent, as well as the
professionals sharing some of their teaching techniques, on an outstanding Teaching and Coaching
Summit. We were scrambling for chairs when Kevin Schaeffer put together a Growth of the Game
meeting last month with nearly 40 attendees. The conversation was spirited and I know we all
came away from that session with something that could help us provide a better experience for
the customers at our facility.
We still need more involvement with our pros in school programs, but thank you all for
taking steps to help out and get involved. We have a great event coming soon with the Ozzie and Friends Concert to
benefit REACH. Put this on your calendar as a must see event with Nikko Smith, Kathleen Madigan and Vince Gill
performing. You may purchase tickets by going to Ticketmaster with prices ranging from $30-$250!
With the Spring Meeting taking place at the end of this month I wanted to make sure all members were aware of
the new dress code policy. This topic of conversation comes up at just about every board meeting and with what we
have seen as recently as last fall we felt it was time to make a change. Josh contacted many of the other Sections and
found we were one of the only ones without a dress code. Please help us make this transition of presenting ourselves
as more professional by wearing at sport coat at all future meetings.
Finally, Junior League Golf! What can I say but thank you for signing up for this great National Program. Last
year the Gateway Section had four teams participate and this year we will probably hit 40 by the time you read this
newsletter. The email I sent out to my membership describing this league and asking them to go to the website to
check out the videos has created a buzz unlike any other for our junior golf program. If you do not have a team
registered your members are going to hear about this and wonder why you don’t. Thanks again to all and see you in
a few weeks.

Gateway PGA President

Dear Gateway PGA Members,
I am thrilled to introduce Michael Brown, PGA as our new Gateway PGA Junior
Director. Michael brings a wealth of knowledge to the Gateway PGA through green grass
positions that have ranged from Assistant Professional to PGA Head Professional at facilities
in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Missouri. Most recently, Michael was a huge asset to our
Foundation through the newly launch Junior Development Tour. During this time, a true
passion for serving youth and promoting the PGA brand was put on center stage.
Michael grew up in Ohio and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Ohio
University in Exercise Physiology. Mr. Brown is a Class A Member of the PGA of America
and has a phenomenal record of service at each of the local levels he was employed. His wife and two boys are an
important part of his life and they are confident that his wife’s new position, with Wells Fargo, will keep them in St.
Louis for a long time to come. Please join me in welcoming Michael Brown to the team. I am confident that your
reaction will be the same as the PGA Professionals and Juniors Parents who have had the pleasure of meeting and
working with Michael.
Sincerely,
Josh Riley, PGA
Gateway PGA
Executive Director

GROWTH OF THE GAME
Spring is Ramping Up – So Should Your Player Development Programs!
The Growth of the Game Committee came out in record number for the first meeting of 2014! 29 Gateway PGA Professionals and Apprentices gathered to discuss what it means to grow the game of golf and how we can accomplish it together. You do not have to be on the GOG Com-mittee, though, to make an impact. Think about these questions:
What does “Growth of the Game” mean and how does it relate to me and my facility? What can I do both inside my facility and inside my community? How can we work together to increase our impact – Professionals, Apprentices, Section?
Growth of the Game can be BIG – like Women’s Golf Day. It can also be smaller – like Vacation Bible School or your child’s Field Day at school. Growth of the Game can also be Player Development strategies offered at your facility.
Do you have Player Development programs or products in place to attract new/beginner golfers? Do you have Player Development programs or products in place to keep current golfers coming back? Do you know where to find resources which can help you?
Junior Golf Example:
Looking at this Junior Golf example, each of these four stages of Jr Player Development offer an opportunity for all types of junior (golfer or not). For you to gain new golfers, they generally need to be exposed to the game; that may be through parents, by a fun experience at school, the Drive Chip and Putt competition on television, or a Family Fun Day at a golf course or community event. Once exposed, a facility needs to offer a place for juniors to have fun at the golf course while building a love for the game.
This same approach should be taken with other demographics: adults, women, lapsed golfers, etc. Think of the Gateway PGA Free Women’s Golf Day as an exposure, then hosting a Women’s Get Golf Ready Program as a feeder opportunity, followed by a clinic series or league play.
Want to learn more? What are your next steps? Take advantage of your resources!
Visit PGALinks.com to learn more about PGA opportunities or to register your facility. Request a facility visit from the Section. Utilize the Foundation’s Equipment Rental Program. Do not hesitate to contact me for help or guidance.
Spring is ramping up – so should your Growth of the Game and Player Development Programs!

ASSISTANTS CORNER It is good to be able to say that the 2014 season is finally upon us. The schedule of events for
the assistants of the Gateway section is complete and we are very excited about what’s ahead.
The Assistants Pro-Am is set for Monday, May 19 at Missouri Bluffs. The event is 4 person
2 best ball shamble format. The day starts out with lunch and demo day from 10:30-12:00 right
before our shotgun start. After golf there will be appetizers and the conclusion of a silent
auction that will be going on all day. Even though this is the Assistant’s Pro-Am this event
is open to head professionals as well. Last year we had a banner year in participation with
23 teams. With a terrific site and being part of the new Pro-Am series we are looking to exceed our 2013 numbers.
The Assistants Championship is set for Tuesday, September 2. Very pleased to announce that WingHaven
Country Club will be hosting our championship this year. Hoping we can build off a very successful 2013
Championship in which saw 36 players compete at Greenbriar Hills Country Club. Adam Betz and Jeffrey Schmid
qualified to the national event in Florida last October. Both represented the Gateway very well with a couple of top
ten finishes. We are looking forward to an even better event in 2014 at WingHaven.

The Gateway PGA Tournament Committee has elected to adopt as a condition of
competition for all Player of the Year Point Events the "Groove Rule". I thought it would be
important to re-post it in my newsletter article. If you have any questions regarding the
conformity of your irons, you may refer to the club database on usga.org
Here is how the wording will look on our Hard Card:
19. Groove & Punch Mark Specifications:
In effect for POY Point events, "The player's clubs must conform to the groove and punch mark specifications in the
Rules of Golf that are effective from January 1, 2010.
*PENALTY FOR CARRYING, BUT NOT MAKING STROKE WITH, CLUB OR CLUBS IN BREACH OF
CONDITION:
Match play – At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by
deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred; maximum deduction per round – Two
holes.
Stroke play – Two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred; maximum penalty per round –
Four strokes.
Match play or stroke play – If a breach is discovered between the play of two holes, it is deemed to have been dis-
covered during play of the next hole, and the penalty must be applied accordingly.
Bogey and par competitions – See Note 1 to Rule 32-1a.
Stableford competitions – See Note 1 to Rule 32-1b.
*Any club or clubs carried in breach of this condition must be declared out of play by the player to his opponent in
match play or his marker or a fellow-competitor in stroke play immediately upon discovery that a breach has oc-
curred. If the player fails to do so, he is disqualified.
PENALTY FOR MAKING STROKE WITH CLUB IN BREACH OF CONDITION:
Disqualification.
Exception: Ping Eye2 irons manufactured before March 31, 1990 with a groove spacing to groove width ratio of 2.3
to 1 are permitted for play under the Rules of Golf, even in
certain competitions when the Condition Requiring Clubs
Conforming with Groove and Punch Mark Specifications
Effective January 1, 2010 is in effect. It is the player's re-
sponsibility to refer to the condition of competition posted
for the specific competition in which the player is playing
to ensure compliance with the above exception and to pro-
vide proof of the date on which the club was manufac-
tured. If the player cannot provide such proof, the club
must conform with specifications described in Appendix
II, 5c(i)." (Revised)

The Ladies Professional Golf Association is proud to announce the 2014 launch of a new instructional course
designed to help all golf profes-sionals better understand “how to” teach golf to women so we can inspire and
encourage more women to learn the game.
Because of the traditionally male-dominated culture in golf, the majority of the teaching methods currently in use in
the golf industry were de-veloped by male golf professionals based on their experiences teaching male students or
based on models of the swings of male touring profes-sionals. There has been little research conducted within the
golf industry on whether or not these methods are the same ones that should be used for women, or whether these
methods should be adjusted when working with women. However, research in other sports and in other fields
suggests that women can benefit from gender-specific modification to instructional techniques.
The purpose of this online course is to address this need. Because women may communicate, interpret and digest
information that is presented to them during a golf lesson differently from men, the LPGA would like to educate
golf professionals about how to comfortably and successful-ly teach the game of golf to women.
Using the LPGA Integrated Performance System, the LPGA has developed a personalized format for teaching
women, which recognizes and addresses that each female golfer is unique in their physical capabilities, their
equipment needs and their reasons for wanting to play the game.
The LPGA Integrated Performance System follows an overall student-centered model to guide instructors through
an individual lesson to a rel-atively new golfer. Teacher and student together discover the process for creating
desirable outcomes.
Course Overview
The LPGA Teaching HER Course consists of (4) one hour online modules with knowledge checks and
interactive video segments
The course fee for the four (4) one-hour online instruction modules is $395
LPGA and PGA Professionals completing the online course will receive Continuing Education credits – LPGA
CUs and/or PGA MSRs
Each LPGA or PGA instructor completing the online program, and successfully completing the final knowledge
assessment, will receive the right to use the LPGA Teaching HER Approved Instructor logo
Instructors completing the online course will be listed on LPGA.com as an LPGA Approved Teaching HER
Instructor in the LPGA’s Find a Teacher database.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in spring training, which means opening day is not far away—a sure sign
that we are close to golf season in St. Louis. What is your “spring training” activity to get you ready to
play golf?
A 60-second workout recently featured on the “Dr. Oz Show” might help inspire you to get moving
and motivated to continue. You’ll feel more confident and energized with each repetition!
Get started:
Begin with the football shuffle, which works the upper and lower legs: Stand with feet a little fur-
ther than hip width apart, and then move from foot to foot in a reasonably quick pace for 20 sec-
onds.
Next, come into a plank position (this looks like a push up) with shoulders over the hands. This
position strengthens the core, arms and shoulders. Move into a flying plank by moving to one side,
(i.e. left arm down and right arm up), then going to the other side with left arm up and right arm
down. Go back and forth for 15 seconds.
Finally, do some crunches: sit with knees bent. Lower upper body back (not quite to the floor),
crunch up and turn to one side. Then lower, come back up and turn to the other side. Move through
this exercise for 15 seconds.
Lastly, go back to the football shuffle for 10 seconds
This quick workout will help you get your own “spring training” started. If you need coaching to get
you through the workout, or to tailor a fitness program to your own personal goals, contact Barb at Op-
timal Lifestyles, 314-984-0592 for support.

Two of our events in the first month of the season are Team Events. The UnderArmour Quad-Pro at Forest Hills on March 31st, and the Maui JIm Pro-Assistant at Tapawingo GC on April 28th. Since it is the beginning of the season and we have had a couple of questions regarding eligibility, here are the details.
In both events, non-PGA, terminated or suspended PGA, and amateurs, are all welcomed at both events, provided they are employed at your golf fa-cility. For the Quad-Pro, there is also a team eligi-bility requirement to keep in mind when putting to-
gether your teams. No more than 2 players on a team can have placed in the Top 10 Regular, Top 5 Senior, or Top 5 Assistants, Player of the Year point standings for 2013.
Everyone is looking forward to the Spring season and getting out to enjoy some golf with your friends and co-workers.
TNT Yamaha Par 3 Challenge & Shootout
We are proud to announce a new and exciting season-long contest with our long-time Partners,
TNT Golf Cars & Yamaha. Here is how it is going to work.
In each Gateway PGA Event throughout the 2014 season, there will be a Closest to the Pin contest for the Professionals in each event. There will be 24 events total, including most Pro-Ams, Pro-Opens, & Team Events. Once a player wins a TNT CTP con-test, they are qualified for the Shootout at the end of the season. Those winners will each also receive $100. Once a player has won and qualified, they are no longer eligible for future CTP's, that will give us 24 players in the Shootout.
The TNT Shootout will take place following the Players Championship on Monday, October 13th. A Par 3 will be selected and each qualifier will receive one (1) shot at the target. Closest to the hole will win the Grand Prize, a one-year lease on a TNT Yamaha Customized Golf Cart for their per-sonal use for 2015. The winner gets to choose if they want the cart at their facility or some other lo-cation of their choice. Also, TNT will deliver the cart to the 2015 Gateway PGA Major Events for the Shootout Champions use!
We are so happy to extend the Partnership with TNT Golf Cars. Jason Traeder & Chris Hempen are available at their Wentzville facilty and Terry Traeder remains at the Quincy facility.
