Timing Belt Product Knowledge Training

• North America produces or imports 16 million vehicles a year
– 20% of these vehicles have Timing Belts
3.2 Million New Customers
Timing Belts
3
95% of all general repair shops perform Timing Belt installation
•4 out of every 100 cars serviced will have their timing belt replaced
•Average timing belt replacement is on a car 5 years or older with 68K miles

5
Timing System Labor Claims
Timing Belt system failure = expensive engine damage
Up to 40% of timing belt failures are caused by idler, tensioner failure
Comebacks kill profitability and productivity of installers
Minimum additional dollars to replace all system components utilizing a Timing Belt Kit (TCK)
6
Timing Systems – Warranty Reductions
• Benefits of Kits – “Do it Once, Do it Right”
– Replacing all “system” components is the absolute best practice
– All moving parts are susceptible to failure
– Bearings are filled with grease that over time leak, increasing friction leading to failure

How Many Miles Does Your Vehicle Have?
Two Great Questions To Ask Are:

TCK Job Economics Analysis
1999 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.0L engine
Belt replacement costs• Labor 4.2 hours @ $85 = $357• Parts – T139 belt @ $67• Total cost = $424
Difference of $61Timing Component Kit replacement costs
• Labor 4.4 hours @ $85 = $374• Parts – TCK139 kit @ $111• Total cost = $485

• Tensile Failure
If the cover isn’t correctly positioned, foreign materials may get in the drive and damage the belts. Excessive installation tension, or damage to the tensile cord due to improper handling before or during installation, also causes tensile failure.
Causes of Premature Belt Failure
15
Tooth Shear
Not enough tension, or seizure of the driven part will cause tooth shear
Causes of Premature Belt Failure
17
Back Cracks
Excessive temperatures under the hood, or extreme cold, contribute to cracking
Causes of Premature Belt Failure
18
Land Wear
Wear between the teeth is caused by rough sprockets or excessive tension
Causes of Premature Belt Failure
19
Oil Contamination
Faulty oil seals may cause oil to leak on the belts
Absolutely NO oil contamination on these belts!!!
Causes of Premature Belt Failure
20
Edge Wear
Sprocket flange damage, or misalignment lead to edge wear.
Causes of Premature Belt Failure
