    SEPTEMBER F R O M T H E D E S K O F M R S . A D A M S 2011

    This summer while attending

Confratute at The University ofConnecticut, I had the opportunity

to learn about a research method

    for students called the Independent

    Investigation Method (IIM or

    Double I - M.) I am so excited

for the students to learn this

method! It is a research approachthat I believe will teach skills that

    will help the students throughout

the rest of their school career! To

learn this method, we are working

together in class to learn the 7

steps through our study of Dale

Chihuly. While on my trip toConfratute, I visited the Boston

Museum of Fine Arts where I saw

    Chihulys exhibit, Through the Looking

    Glass.

Your child may have told you

about the glass artist that we are

learning about and if not, please

    check out his website,

    www.dalechihuly.com. There are

many short video clips showing how

    Chihuly creates his glass.

I have two goals for our G.A.T.E.

students this fall: learning to do

quality research and to learn about

    Dale Chihuly and create Chihuly-

ish art. Our artistic endeavors will

    include creating pipe cleaner

    Ikebanas, paper Macchias, Chihuly

    inspired chandeliers, squirt paintings,

and more! We hope to hold a

    Chihuly event to showcase our

    creations!

    Fourth graders will also begin

    research on their independent topics

    for technology projects. There will

be a letter of due dates for 4th

    graders and their projects. Third

    graders are the AES Technology

Team in Training. They will use

notes taken during the IIM process

    to create different technology

projects to learn how to use

    different MacBook applications, such

    as iPhoto, iMovie, Pages,

    GarageBand, and Keynote.

Both 3rd and 4th grade G.A.T.E. students will learn theDouble I M research method through Chihuly study
