exPoSteChNiCAL DetAiLSOPERATION

The switch unit within the product is a reed relay which isopen in its normal state. A magnet closely positioned to itwill create a magnetic eld which closes the reed relay caus-ing a short circuit signal within the device. If the magnetis moved, the magnetic eld is lost and the reed relay isopened thus breaking the circuit.

FUNCTIONAL DISTANCES

Correct installation is critical to proper functioning. The

magnetic eld and geometric extension vary depending onthe properties of the magnet used. From an operationalstandpoint two measurements are important. The rst is

the distance between the magnet and the sensor, known asthe detector distance. The second is the distance betweenthe axis of the detector and the center point of the magneticeld, known as the operational eccentricity. The recommend-ed detector distance is 10mm. If there is no eccentricity, thefeld lines o the magnet do not close and a magnetic feld is

not produced.

APPLICATION

The sensor has an enhanced safety cable leader which takesinto consideration the requirements of products used in explo-sion hazard environments. It also has intrinsic safety circuitry.

ELECTRICAL PROTECTION

The product is sealed air tight with a poured resin, therebyprotecting the contact element and the cable from all typesof environmental damage. The detector is categorized IP67electrical protection according to the IEC 529.

MECHANICAL INSTALLATIONThe device can be mounted in several ways. The detectorcan be screwed into the desired position with accompaniedby the two counter nuts. This solution is only recommended

when the detector does not need to be frequently moved orif the other end of the cable is not xed in position. The otheroption is mounting it in a hole in a metal plate with the twocounter nuts.

MAGNET

A magnet is necessary for the sensor to function.The minimum size of the magnet used depends on its type.The sensor will function with magnets of any material.A Ferrite magnet should be at least NA204 in size whileneodymium and AlNiCo magnets should be NA120.5.Circular magnets are preferred for operation with thedetector. The detector is shipped with a magnet.

GAS DeteCtiveteChNiCAL DetAiLSTHE DETECTION PROCESSWhen the semiconductor is heated, an electrical current isproduced at its particle limit.

If this takes place in the presence of clean air (free ofdangerous gases), the oxygen in the air absorbs the freedelectrons on the surface of the semiconductor. This createsa potential barrier and increases the electrical resistance.

If the sensor comes into contact with reduction gases, the

gas molecules absorb on the semiconductor which resultsin oxidation. The oxidation reduces the potential barrier, andthus also the electrical resistance.

This process depends greatly on the material compositionof the semiconductor used and the catalytic temperatureapplied. The GasDetective - DW 85 GEx is optimizedespecially for the detection of methane, butane,ethanol,and hydrogen.

ELECTRONIC OPERATION

The signal processing and control unit makes use of the riseand fall in the electrical resistance described above.

The signal is produced on a comparator using a resistorbridge. One branch of the resistor bridge is used for tem-perature compensation. The other branch is sensitive to

the measured gases. The resulting signal reects the gasconcentration independent of temperature.

INSTALLATIONThe sensor may only be installed and operated horizontallyor vertically with the sinter steel lter facing outwards ordownwards. If this is not the case, the device will not operateproperly, resulting in dangerous gas concentration levels,which will not be registered as such because of theimproper installation.
