She was em­ployed at Pinecrest and later at Oxford Nursing Home, Ingersoll from 1970 to 197:3 and was mail carrier for Rural Route 4, Thames­ford for the years 1976 and 7.

She was united in marri­age to Maurice Marritt November 6, 1946, and is survived by her husband Maurice, daughters; Vivian (Mrs. Eldon Bawton), Alvina, Brenda (Mrs. Ted Desroches of Collingwood) and Carol. Sentinel-Review staff writer .. INGERSOLL - A 66-year­old man died Thursday while fighting a brush fire here. " Doug ~~or~~, of King Srreet es~ su enly suf-fered a heart attack while rushing with buckets of Thames River water to exUnguish a backyard bonfire which got out of control.

The retired machine and tool plant foreman, who had a history 0{ hear( trouble, was found dead at the 8(:ene, near the Thames River behind some King Street West houses, Ingersoll police reported.

The blare was Ingersoll's third grass lire this week.

In a casual conversation after the first fire Sunday, town lire chlef Ken Campbell worried out loud about the high potential for grass fires this year.

HiS fears w'ere reinforced after two more fires Wed­nesday and Thursday: "Thlngs are so dry, I'm afraid we are going to have more this spring, unless we get som.e fain . Right now, it's dangerous. "

Thls year's unseasonably mUd winter has resulted in a lack of spring run-off which has rendered vegetation unusually dry and suscep"­tible to igniting agents ,such as unextinguished cigarette butts or matChes. .

'Fighting fire causes death

"!;treef West, was 1ymg to put out a grass fire that had gone out of control behind his residence, when he suffered a heart attack. He had been carrying buckets of water to quench the blaze when the attack occurred.

A neighbor found Mr. Fitzmorris, and tried to revive him through mouth-to­mouth resuscitation. Mr. Fitzmorris had a history of heart problems, having suffered two previous heart attacks.

Ingersoll Fire Department was called in to put out the Qlaze. No damage was incurred.

She is survived by her husband, Rev. John P. Cooke; her daughter-in-law J\1.rs. Olive Cooke of Inger­soli; her sister Mrs. Lulu Manning of Toronto.

She was predeceased by her son Jack in 1972, and by her brother Gordon.

Born in Fu1larton Town­ship, Mrs. Cooke married Rev. Cooke in 1927. They . resided in Pelee Island,

. Port Lambton, Warwick, Milverlon, and Drayton. They had Hickson and Arkona Pastoral charges prior to their retirement in Thames(ord in 1965.

Mrs. Cooke was a mem­ber of High Park United Church, Toronto, and West­minster United Church, Thamesford. She was a leader and member of High Park United Church choir and a member of the Mend­elson Choir of Toronto. She and Rev . Cooke sang for many years with Rev . Stanley and Ethel Johnson at community and church functions.

She was responsible for

Born in Scotby, England, the second youngest of nine children, she came to Can­ada in 1910, She was edJcat­ed in Scotland. and in Winnipeg and took post sec­ondary and specialist work in Chicago . She began her teaching career in MacTav­ish, Manitoba. She taught physical education at Earl Grey Junior High School, Winnipeg, and was the first teacher of physical educa"' ti.on for girls in a Junior High School in Canada.

By the time her teaching career had ended she had taught and coached thous­ands of students in Manito­ba, Montreal, New Bruns­wick and Ontario.

In addition to teaching and coaching, Mrs. Clark was herself an outstanding athlete . She was a high school sprint champion in Winnipeg; was an out· standing tennis player, win­ning championships in var­ious clubs in Windsor and Detroit; and played on and coached the championship women's basketball team in St. John, New Brunswick .. She also had a successful I

career in golf, winning' championships in Peterbor- . ough and Ingersoll. _

She married Alverne B . Clark in Winnipeg in Janu­ary 1926 and they later moved to Montreal, then to St. John, New Brunswick.

involved with Trinity United Church and with the town swimming program. Mrs. Clark was a member of the Trinily Church Choie for 30 years, was Involved with the Y.M.C.A. program in Inger­soli, a member of the U.C.W. and a member and former regent of the Nors­worthy Chapter J .O.D.E. She taught physical educa­tion to girls in the element­ary school , system through the Y,M .C.A , and fol' over 15 years was head instructor and organizer of the Y.M.C.A.'.~ ·pre-kindergar-' ten schQQI. She was actively involved -in the women's program 'at the golf course and taught curling , "Surviving besides her hus­

Campbell, born in IB90 in ;Ingersoll, Ontario, daughter of the late Thomas H. Campbell of Buffalo, New York, died Monday, April 11. 1983.

Raised in Ingersoll by her grandmother, Mrs. Homer Campbell Senior, Miss Campbell also lived for several years with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. S.

. A: Gibson . After leaving Ingersoll

she became an American citizen . She finished her high school education, obtained her BAand her MA in the U.S., and taught for three years in Louisiana. She taught for 37 years in Oklahoma City.

Miss Campbell retired from teaching in 1955 and continued to live in Ok­lahoma City until her death.

Her body was cremated in Oklahoma City on April 12, 1983.

OATMAN: Blaine Doug­las Oatman of Sprlngford, died at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Satur­day , Apri123, 1983 In his 75th year .

Born in South . Norwich Township on September 3, 1908, he lived in the Spring­ford area all of his life. He was a market gardener for the past 43 years and was a member of Springford United Church.

He was the secretary­treasurer · of the Springford Cemetery board for a num­ber of years and was active in sports such as hunting and fishing. He has hunted in Northern Ontario for the past 52 years, with the Springford Hunt Club.

He was one of the found­ers of the former South Norwich Fish and Game club .

Mr. Oatman was the son of the late Louis Oatmah and the former Ada Ruckle.

Surviving is his wife, the former Margaret F. Pett­man; his daughter Mrs,

He was a retlred dispatcher with the Ingersoll Police Depart­ment and prior to this worked for Aylmer Clean­ers and Witty School Bus Lines. He was a past Presi­dent of Branch 119 Ingersoll Legion.

Mrs. Gibson, formerly of Ingersoll, resided in Lon­don, but was born in Stoke Newington, England .

She was predeceased by her first husband, the late James Roberts, who died in 1938, and by her second husband, the late Samuel A: Gibson who died in 1953.

Mary Elizabeth !~~ of Ingersoll and John William Toslani of Woodstock were Wlited in marriage October 8, 1983, at Sacred Heart Church, lngersoll. Reverend C~arles Campbell conducted the ceremony with Reverend George Watt assisting.

Thr. hrirl~ is the dauehter of Elmer and Ma~ry Sheila Teal, of Ingersoll, and the groom is the son of Irene Tosland and the late John Tosland, of Thamesford.

The church was decorated with two candelabras of pink carnations whtte statice, and white mini-carnatio~s, and two arrangements of white gladiolus and pink carnations, and 11 white pew bows ~ith pink carnations. .

'Organist 'was Charles Banhardt. Mary Watt, of Ingersoll was soloist and Chris Chard was guitarist. Musical numbers included the Wedding song, Evergreen and Author of Love.

The bride's gown was cathedral length in Victorian style with chiffon over satin and Alen~on lace on the neckband, cuffs and hemlIne. It had a leg of mutton sleeves peplum and V-shaped ruffles on the bodic~ made of Alencon lace. The botlice was adorned with seed pearls. The dress was designed and made by sister of the bride Michele Teale. She wore a Tudor hat of satin ~nd chiffon with a double layer ·fmgertlp length veil. There was a bow at the back of the hat adorned with pearls. That hat was made by the bride. She carried a cascade bouquet of white gardenias, stephanotis, freesia and azalea pink roses. .

Maid of honor W8~ Mary Catherine Kelly, of Thamesford, friend of the bride. She wore a floor length burgundy gown of satin with burgundy Alencon lace on the bodice, neckband, cuffs, sleeves and peplum. Her headdress was a wreath of pink flowers and she carried a cascade bouquet or Bubrium lilies, azalea pink roses and light pink miniature carnations.

The bridesmaids wore the same gowns as the main of honor_They were Jane McGee, of Kintore, friend of the bride, Leah Pearson, of Kintore, friend of the bride, MicheHe Teale, Ingersoll, sister of th~ bride and Elizabeth Smits, Ingersoll, ffle~d of the bride. Flower girl was Wendy Brulnes, of Woodstock, friend of the bride and groom . She wore a pink satin and AIencon lace floor length gown. There was lace on the cuffs, collar and the ruffle on the bodice. There was a ruffle on the hem of the dress. Her headdress was a wreath of pink flowers and she carried a white wicker basket of Rubriun lilies, azalea pink roses arid light pink carnations.

.The ~room wore an Oxford grey tuxedo WIth tails and a black bow tie. The ushers wore Oxford grey tuxedos with black bow tics and the ringbearer wore a pearl grey tuxedo with a black bow tie.

Best man was John Scotland, of London, ffiend of the groom and ushers were Tom Ingram, of Woodstock, friend of the groom, Chris Dubicki, of Thamesford, friend of the goom, Doug Holland, of Woodstock, friend of the groom, and Michael Teale, of Ingersoll! brother of the bride. Ringbearer w~s Chnstopher Bruines, friend of the brIde and groom.

A reception was held at Henderson Hall with 125 guests attending from Saskatche­wan, London, Collingwood, Toronto, List­owel, Ingersoll Woodstock and Thames­ford. The GCl1trcpieces were pink carna­tions, m(lUve and white statice with a white candle in the middle. The bride's table had a large arrangement of pink carnations and white statice.

Master of ceremonies was Jeff Wake­ling, friend of the bride and goom. Wendy McLelland took care of the guest book.

The bride's mother wore an azalea pink floor length gown. The groom's mother wore C\ peach floor length gown. Both had Cymbidum orchid corsages.

The bride wore a going away outfit of grey tailored suit and pink silk blouse. She had a corsage of pink roses and baby's breath.

After a wedding trip to the Poconos Mountains, in Pennsylvcmia, the happy couple will reside in Woodstock.

Mr, Ellis is also survived by three brothers, Luther of Prince Edward Island, Stanley of California, Roy of Wood­stock, and one sister, Mrs. William (Sadie) Hatt of St. Catharines.

He is predeceased by three brothers Taylor, Stew­ard, Athole, and his parents, John and Harriett Ellis.

accident

An Ernbro man died in a single car accident after striking a portable cement abutment on County Road 6 August 3.

Dead is Paul Walter ~ 37, of R.R. 5, Embro. He was traveliing north on County Road 6 when he struck the abut­ment shortly before mid­night.

The accident occurred one and a half kilometres south of Embro. He was pronounced dead at the scene bv Coroner Dr. R .M. Hall of -Norwich.

The accident is under investigation by Constable J.G. Ross of the Woodstock OPP.
