Keynote Sessions

Guest keynotesMeet the Newest Medium: Data StoriesWe’ll look at ways that researchers, artists and journalists are using storytelling techniques borrowed from film, comics and video games to travel the last mile from information to understanding. We’ll look at viral sensations that are sweeping the Internet, sophisticated interactive graphics from major news organizations like The New York Times and the Guardian, and buzzworthy data visualizations done for firms like GE, MTV and others. Lastly, how to stimulate conversations around data that help your own organization make better decisions.

Second City Communications: What an Intelligent Idea! A unique perspective on a serious topic from The Second City comedy troupe: The Second City has been performing sketch comedy in front of audiences for over 50 years, making it the standard by which comedy and improv in America are judged. Some of their most well-known alumni are Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert to name a few. Imagine the fun we’ll have exploring the comic side of the oxymoron “business intelligence,” the debate over whether we master data or it masters us, absurd (yet painfully real) examples of data quality gaffs, and more.

NEW! Track E: Technical Insights—Data Architecture and DesignData is fluid, ever-changing, and an ever-new river of life for the organization. It is structured, unstructured, quasi-structured. It is inside and outside IT, in the cloud and the data center, volatile and inert. BI architecture designs must be fluid, immediate and unbounded to support enterprises that must adapt to an increasingly democratized, consumerized and externalized business world. This track presents architecture and design strategies for today’s data managers and architects to deploy that will meet modern business challenges.

K1b. The Future of BI

The future of BI will be focused on better business decisions. But that requires that we expand from today’s view of BI, which is often focused on silos of tools, information and technology, and define a future view where BI is a recognized as a core set of business competencies which fit more naturally and effectively within decision-making processes.

Bill Hostmann, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst

K2. The Battle Royale: The New IT Infrastructure vs. the Traditional Infrastructure

We are moving quickly to fabric computing with virtually integrated computing systems, new servers with storage-class memory and Flash, and SSD replacing spinning disk. In-memory DBMS and column-store could provide a single DBMS model for both transactional and analytical applications in the future. These are disruptive changes but promise new applications with low latency and high performance for predictive analytics, business analytics and Pattern-Based Strategy™. This will require changes to the way we develop and deploy business applications as well as to the ways we integrate transactional and BI analytic applications. A moderated panel of industry CTOs and thought leaders will discuss and debate current models versus new and evolving ones.

Key issues:• Is there really value in these new

systems and applications?• Will the in-memory column-store

DBMS be the answer for tightly integrating both OLTP and analytic applications?

• Can the traditional DW DBMS address this new paradigm?

• Will cloud-based infrastructure play a significant role?

• When and how will this change take place?

Hosts: Donald Feinberg; Panelists: Mark Townsend, Vice President, Database Product Management, Oracle; Dave Campbell, Technical Fellow, Microsoft; Mike Olsen, CEO, Cloudera Inc.; Steven Brobst, CTO, Teradata Corporation; Sethu Meenakshisundaram, Senior Vice President, Products and Strategy, SAP Business Analytics

K3. BI Excellence Award: Finalist Presentations

The Gartner BI Excellence Award highlights world-class BI and performance management initiatives and their successes, challenges and insights. In this keynote, three finalists from North American organizations will present their initiatives, and audience members will select the winner for 2011.

K5. Gartner Magic QuadrantTM and Megavendor Comparison Power Session

Who are the competing vendors in the major BI and PM technology markets? The Gartner Magic Quadrant™ is a culmination of research in a specific market, giving you a wide-angle view of the relative positions of the market’s competitors. This session will also cover the four Megavendors (IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP) that have been investing aggressively and are dominating the market. Understanding their plans and road maps is key for success with your BI and PM strategy. This is your chance to hear Gartner analysts at their best—unbiased, unscripted and unfiltered. It is also your chance to ask the questions that will help you with your investments.

A2. Ramp Up the IT Data Warehouse and Support Operational Technology

Operational technology (OT) provides large volumes of rapidly produced data at very high speeds of communication. How will the mission-critical data warehouse promote the use of analysis engines in the OT-IT convergence? Has the day of the high-speed operational data store finally arrived? Key issues:• What challenges exist in the highly

disparate service-level expectations of OT and BI?

• Can real-time warehousing and BI techniques help with OT-IT convergence?

• What will change in data quality and integration expectations with OT-IT convergence?

Mark A. Beyer, Vice President

F IT

A3. Extreme Data: Challenges and Opportunities for Large-Scale Data Warehousing, BI and Analytics

Everyone agrees that the volume of data we attempt to manage is exploding. However, volume (“big data”) does not present the sole challenge. We must also consider the velocity, variety and complexity of the data that, together with volume, define “extreme data.” Many information management challenges (regarding support of BI, analytics and Pattern-Based StrategyTM) can be addressed through improved understanding and competencies when dealing with extreme data. Key issues:• What is extreme data, how is it used

and what opportunities does it present for businesses?

• How does extreme data challenge today’s architectures and approaches for data management?

• What are the emerging techniques for harnessing extreme data and making it available and usable by business analytics?

A4. Data Integration Strategies for Fueling BI/PM Initiatives

Data integration architectures in support of BI continue to evolve. Organizations must now support a range of delivery styles, latencies and formats. At the same time, vendor and market convergence are making tools for data integration more readily available. Since these tools are critical components of a comprehensive information infrastructure in support of BI and other key initiatives, appropriate evaluation of core capabilities is a must.

A6. Spinning BI Gold From Data in the Cloud

Cloud computing and SaaS are facilitating new BI and data management strategies, and alternative ways to deploy tools. CIOs and IT leaders focused on information management initiatives need to address the opportunities and challenges within the business and within IT in order to fulfill their organizations’ information needs, including managing enterprise data in the cloud. Key issues:• What diverse business demands

are driving data into cloud-based deployments?

• What strategies do CIOs require to ensure they have the needed agility for crucial company data in the cloud?

• How are alternative data management delivery technologies evolving and how can leaders leverage them for success?

Mark A. Beyer, Vice President

S IT A

A7. Best Practices for Data Quality Improvement: Ensuring BI Success Through High-Value Data

Data quality needs to be positioned as a business-focused discipline rather than a technology issue. Engaging the proper people, developing required skills and establishing specific roles are fundamental for achieving substantial progress in data quality improvement. In addition, the capabilities and usage of data quality tools are evolving, creating opportunities for organizations that seek to automate data quality controls. Key issues:• How do corporate culture and the

behavior of people influence the state of data quality?

• What are the critical roles and skills required for data quality improvement, and where in the organization should they reside?

• Where can data quality technology add value, and what is the state of the data quality tools market?

A8. Business Intelligence and Master Data Management Synergy

The intersection of BI with MDM goes beyond simply feeding master data into the data warehouse. Many organizations struggle with providing master data for traditional BI information, such as dimensions and measures. Some BI programs have centralized approaches to provide more consistent information, but often this leaves business users without flexibility. Key issues:• Metrics: How can an enterprise metrics

A9. Enterprise Information Architecture and Enterprise Information Management 2011

The benefits of holistic information management are clear: complete and trustworthy information allows business leaders to make better decisions, faster. The perils of fragmented information management—unnecessary cost, risk and loss of productivity—are equally clear. This presentation will allow you to assess the state-of-the-art of enterprise information management (EIM) and help you start or continue your own EIM journey. Key issues:• How can enterprises determine which

information assets should be managed in an EIM program?

• What organizational structures, roles and governance processes are needed to make EIM a reality and where does information architecture fit?

• How mature is EIM, and what best practices have emerged from existing EIM programs?

NEW! Track ETechnical Insights: Data Architecture and DesignE1. Successful Strategies for Tuning BI and Analytics Infrastructure With Enterprise Architecture (EA) Vision, Models and Standards

Reports to the contrary notwithstanding, EA and BI are not enemies. Because BI infrastructures tap into data and

Traditional OLAP is a critical aspect of enterprise BI, especially where metrics are expected to be consistent and comparable across the organization (e.g., sales statistics or financial performance measures). However, many organizations are still living with uncoordinated and unconnected data marts, star schemas and metrics. Dimensions are the glue that can connect the stars. This session introduces state-of-the-art methods and sample tools for planning and implementing conformed dimensions, thus achieving a data warehouse “bus architecture.” The techniques are equally applicable for designing a coherent data mart layer in environments by utilizing a “corporate information factory” approach, as described by data warehouse leader Bill Inmon.

E3. Taxonomies and Data Models: A Trip Through Parallel Universes

How similar/dissimilar are taxonomies and data models? Historically, each has been created and maintained by siloed organizations for siloed, application-specific purposes. There is a growing demand from users to share data in new ways that require IT to break down the structured/unstructured data silos. For too long enterprises have been running their businesses on the information they can get and not the information they want to use. For a variety of reasons, structured and unstructured data have been treated separately. Given technological advances and overall high levels of data and document digitization, the obvious question is: why should structured and unstructured data operate in parallel universes? The barriers between the parallel universes are strong and well-defended, and have existed up until now without fatal results. Increasingly, the failure to break down the barriers is

leading to degraded competitive positioning, costly compliance violations and loss of operational agility. Key issues: • How to integrate taxonomies with

data models• Effects on data governance, data

manual text mining is prohibitively expensive and physically infeasible in high-volume, high-value situations. Evaluation of commercially available text analytics systems is challenging because, apart from the shared objective to automatically derive meaning from text, these products can be vastly different in their architecture and operation.
