Silver Medal for the U13 Indoor Athletics Team! On Friday 25 January, fourteen Year 8 pupils took part in the Bracknell Forest Indoor Athletics Competition at Bracknell Leisure Centre. This year, six Bracknell Forest schools were taking part, making it the most competitive event in recent years. The team performed superbly throughout the day with some excellent individual performances in both the track and field events. As a result, it concluded with some of the closest results recorded. In the overall competition, Garth Hill College finished 2nd, just five points behind first place! In the boys’ competition it was even closer. Just one point separated our team who finished 3rd from 2nd place which would have been enough to qualify for the county competition. The girls’ team did manage to secure a qualification place, again though, only narrowly finishing behind 1st place. The girls will now go on to represent Bracknell Forest at the County Competition in March. Overall, it was a fantastic day and all of the pupils represented themselves and Garth Hill College superbly. Well done to the following pupils – Tathan Brooks, Nathan McWilliam, Leroy Chan, Matthew Mulè, Guy Woodward, Josh Ncube, Destiny Iloegbune, Charlie Lawes, Mianke Bosman, Corin Tims, Laura Coppins, Aimee Claypole and Chloe Wilshire Also a big thank you to Ben Britton (Year 10) who helped train and coach the team in preparation for this event.

Message from Assistant Head of House, Mr Bennison
Last week the focus of our assembly was to remind our pupils of the various people in college that they
are able to speak to if they have any concerns. It was a great opportunity to put faces to names and to
remind everyone that we have a very strong support network within Fielden.
Following this assembly, I would like to remind our parents and carers that if they need to contact
someone in college regarding their child then they should make contact with their child ’s form tutor in the
first instance. Their form tutor will ensure that your concerns are directed to the appropriate people within
college.

A message from Mr Head Dear Lawrence House, I hope you all enjoyed the INSET day last week and Lawrence came back a little more refreshed.
This week is our Celebration of Success Assembly where we celebrate so many of the positive events that
happen every day at Garth Hill College. Now is the last couple of days to get the Caught Doing the Right
Thing tickets in the post box outside the House Office to ensure you are in the draw. You could be in for a
chance to win an IPAD.
I sincerely hope that everyone found the assembly on ‘Who can I talk to’ useful. It is encouraging that,
according to the most recent well being survey, more pupils in Lawrence House are feeling safe, supported
and happy to talk to staff. It is very important that every pupil and parent/carer knows how they can access
staff to discuss any problems or issues that they are having.

Arun Weston 7L1 achieved this certificate on his own merit of hard work. He attended the Fusion Residential in August 2018 and was awarded an Entry Level Leadership Qualification, which is a recognised qualification. Congratulations Arun.
31 January 2019 is Young Carers Awareness Day. The purpose of the day is to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by young peo-ple because of their caring role, and to campaign for greater support for young carers and their needs. A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol. 1 in 5 secondary school children have a caring role, this might include carrying out practical tasks, helping someone communicate or looking after siblings, as well as providing physical care and emotional support. If you or someone you know is a young carer, please let us know so that we can help support them as they support others #careformetoo. Talk to someone in your House Team, your tutor or any of the team that you saw in assembly on Friday. We are all here to help. Mrs Ranger.

Head of House Message
Dear Parents and Carers, Last week’s assemblies focused on key members of the staff and student body who were available should your child have any issues. The Garth Hill College Community came together from all areas – the LSC, student Community Managers, the pastoral teams, Pupil Learning Partners, the LRC team, House Mentors, the Anti Bullying Ambassadors, Site Controllers etc. The Auditorium stage was flooded with these individuals so that our Havershamees could see the wealth of people that they could go to if they needed to report anything. I am so proud of the united team that we have here in Haversham and pupils always go out of their way to support each other. To further add to this, we have quite a few of our Year 10s involved in being trained by Miss Barrett as Peer Mentors for Year 7 this week. We’re really proud of them and grateful to them all for giving up their valuable time for this. Ms Murray

Is your child involved in something exciting outside of school? Please let us know!
Well Done All of our Year 11 boys who are currently involved in supporting Year 8 with their football. Mr Mortimer reports: “the boys are having such a positive impact on the pupils (and their behaviour at school) and the Year 8s are really responding well to them. The training they have been delivering and the help they are providing has really been outstanding.” I’m really pleased to hear this, boys. Top work! Harley Carter, 9H1, who, Mrs Bhutta reports, “has greatly improved his attitude to learning in his French
class.” Well done, Harley – keep up the great work!
Mrs Langley’s Message
Young Carers Awareness Day Thursday 31 January is National Young Carers Awareness Day. There are approximately 175,000 young carers in the UK doing on average 20 hours of work a week within their homes. Not surprisingly this can have an impact on school. Many young carers can struggle to be involved in social activities and are often left feeling isolated. Here at Garth Hill we have some amazing young carers, and we try to offer them as much support as we can, but how can their peers help too? Be a good friend! Many young carers can find the pressure of being a carer hard to manage and this can impact on their own mental health. The message from young carers was #careformetoo! Try and be a good friend by asking how they are doing, and letting someone know if you are worried. Try and include them in social activities so they know they are part of your group, even if they cannot join in all the time.

Brownlow House News

Welcome to Brownlow House - A House for Heroes
Little Gem
We all need someone to talk to, someone who listens, someone who understands
Brownlow Leadership Team
Brownlow had an assembly on 'who can I talk to' on Monday afternoon. During a recent survey some pupils said they didn't know who they could talk to about any problems. As our Little Gem quote says, we all need someone to talk to, who listens to us (without judging what we say) and someone who understands what we say. In Brownlow we have a number of staff who will do this and if you were in the assembly you would have seen both staff and pupils who are available for you to go and talk to if you need to. Mr Swanton is based in the Brownlow office, ground floor B block, opposite B001 or in his classrooms in D block; Mrs Frost is based in the Brownlow office too but also in C001 (food room) at the bottom of C block near the restaurant entrance; Mr Turner is based at the top of Brownlow 2nd floor; your tutors are available mostly in their tutor rooms except for Mrs Stevens who teaches in B001, Mr Hamilton and Mr Topple teach in various rooms on the ground floor of Brownlow. The pupil leadership team are always around, particularly at break and lunch and they do come round during tutor time. If you still do not feel you want to approach any of these people tell your parents, carers, older siblings, close friends and get them to come and talk to us. You are never alone - there is always someone to listen to you - whatever you want to say is important to us.
