Library Benefit Donation – As requested by club members, the GSMS+ has made a donation in the Club’s name to the Benefit for the Library Lion. Prize Sponsors – It’s been a tough year soliciting prize donations, so we thank those companies that have contributed. Additionally, a motion was made to consider raising our Annual Dues as dues have been $10 since the mid-80s. Other clubs’ dues are $30. We could then perhaps get more outside speakers. After some discussion it was decided that dues will remain unchanged for several reasons: there are fewer & fewer new books that we need to purchase for our Club library; food/coffee is covered by our library fund; we have ample inventory of supplies for sale; speakers generally ask for $200-$300, we generally haven’t paid speakers in past; and we have been managing fine at our current rates. We will leave rates “as is” until “needing money” becomes an issue. Library – Our September Library Display has been taken down, if you have not received your projects back please see Pete Laudati. For our Club’s Library, Pete Laudati is also working on converting video tapes to DVD. December Pollyanna Gift Exchange – For those that would like to participate, at our next meeting (Dec 5 th ), please bring a wrapped “Marquetry Plus” project to give as a gift. In Memory of

John Bennett

A long time member of GSMS passed away over the summer. John enjoyed woodworking and making projects for his church. He often came to meetings with

the Staten Island Crew. John will be missed by all who knew him.

Presentation by Dr. Shayegan

Dr. Shayegan, an ophthamologist from Philadephia, shared more about his Marquetry pursuits with our Club. His work is very intricate. He enjoys the challenge of big pieces, such as the Persian Rug patterns which take him about a year to complete. His work has been exhibited in the prestigious Philadelphia Art Museum. He always had an interest in Marquetry, both before and after attending medical school. He taught himself Marquetry from books and feels that the artistic nature of fine wood work is more to his personality that other types of wood working. Due to his medical profession, he makes a point to keep his fingers away from power tools. Tools he uses include: a 12 inch fret saw that is 30 inches deep; surgical tools; and forceps. He also gets tools from Micromark.

each year is already scheduled for February 19-21, 2010, in the usual location of Somerset, NJ. We again will be asking for a double booth. A request has been made to bring more lighting around the saw area. Also, wearing Club shirts will be strongly encouraged.

Embroidered Club Sweatshirts & Hats – In addition to the already available embroidered collared Club staff shirts ($20) and T-shirts ($11), we will also order Club Sweatshirts and Hats to be available for sale. Sweatshirts will be $20 each (with an additional $2 for sizes 2X or larger). The Club will order the required minimum of 24 sweatshirts. Also, baseball caps in Navy Blue with the Club logo will be $10 each, a minimum order of 12 has been placed.

Next Meeting at the Library will be on December 5th. At this December meeting, Pat Miles will do an Intarsia demonstration. Also, if you want to participate in the Holiday Gift Exchange, please bring your wrapped Pollyanna gift.

Highlights from our Oct 3rd, 2009 Meeting Summer Projects – 17 Members brought in projects made during the Summer Break. Each received a “prize” donated by companies listed on our Support Page (see page 7 of this newsletter).

Picnic Meeting – Our September Picnic meeting was successfully held at Clover Hill Farms in Allenwood, NJ, hosted by the Corsons. See pictures and more information on Page 6.

NorthEast Woodcarver’s RoundUp – Members who attended the NE Woodcarver’s RoundUp in Honesdale Pennsylvania over the summer recommend the event, especially if you can get there in time to sign up for free classes taught by quality instructors. 2010 date to be announced.

Grizzly Tent Event – John T went to the Grizzly Tent Event in PA and, as expected, experienced long lines despite getting there an hour early.

Woodburning Demonstration by Eva Hoefele

Eva Hoefele described how woodburning takes patience and practice, but that it is quicker to do than Marquetry. Tips include: start with a medium burn, you can always go darker; hard woods need a hotter pen; to get a light line, move the tip quicker; it’s about speed not pressure; stroke should go from dark to light (not the opposite); go over your final picture two to three times.

“Show & Tell” (Summer) Projects shown at Our Oct 3rd Meeting

Picnic Meeting

Our Sept 12th Picnic meeting at Clover Hill Farms, in Wall/Allenwood, was enjoyed by all. We are already hoping we will be able to go again next year. The weather threatened rain, but it luckily held off long enough for us to: have our meeting and picnic; to view the antique collections, the feeding of the animals, and a bagpipe demonstration by Bill Greaves. 47 people were in attendance. Thanks to the Corsons for being such gracious hosts. Thanks also to Barb Bram, Pat Miles, and the Grill Masters for all the preparation!
