January Responses 2 January is assumed to be the most uneventful

month of the year. Everybody thinks that the only cool thing about January is the weather and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Contrary to popular beliefs, January is actually very unique.

A survey was sent out to the entire student body testing your knowledge of January. As it turns out, not very many people know much about January’s greatest wonders. For instance, did you know that

January is the National Month of Thank You? Neither did 50% of the student population. 83.3% of people knew that January is named after the great Roman God Janus. One of the most frequent questions missed is that January 4th is always in week one of the year. Only 38.1% of the student body got that correct. Luckily, 88.1% of people knew that there are 31 days in the wonderful month of January. Another common missed question is: Which calendar is January the first month of? Surprisingly, it is the first month of both Julian and Gregorian calendars, stumping a whopping 57.1% of students. People also think flowers have nothing to do with January, but the carnation is January’s flower symbol. 66.7% of students knew that. In conclusion, people make fast assumptions that January in unimportant, unnecessary, and frankly boring. January has a lot of interesting things about it, you just have to be curious enough look for them. The next time that somebody says January is a horrible month, you can bombarde them with all of these wonderful facts!

Game Pigeon is an app you can download to play games against your friends through text messages! Game Pigeon has seventeen games you can play. Most people get it to play 8-ball with their friends. It also works in group chats as well. If you don’t like the games you can just click the “More Games” and everytime it updates more games are down-loaded to it! On most games you are able to change the difficulty. My fa-vorite game is Battleship or Four In a Row. My friends and I always have a great time playing the games. The best part is that it’s free and I didn’t have to waste my iTunes money on a silly game. The bad thing is that it’s only for iPhones. The one thing that is better than Game Pigeon is Bit-moji. Bitmoji is your own little emoji person and they are hilarious. What I like about Bitmoji is that you can connect with snapchat. One special treat is if one of your snapchat friends have their Bitmoji connected with their snapchat, your Bitmoji will be even better! On your iPhone you can send songs to your friends (who also have a iPhone). This way, they can hear the songs you are listening to as well.

3Evolution of the Iphone By: Carrie Doherty

Take a moment and think about something you look at in any spare moment of any day. The thing people would say they do most is check their phone. Though, what would they check their phone for? Nobody has too many missed calls these days. It would be for any noti-fications for social media and apps, such as SnapChat, Instagram, Twitter, and so much more.

If we did not have things like this, it is sure that the world would be a very different place. Honestly, where would we be without the internet?

Thanks to a man named Steve Jobs, we are able to check the internet anytime with a small tap. He invented everyone’s best friend: the iPhone.

In the month of January in 2007, the iPhone was in-troduced to the world. It was a small phone, but with a touch screen -instead of physical buttons- and connect-ed to internet, including little gadgets to access things called “applications”, mostly known today as “apps”. These were the things that allowed the world to connect to what they wished. Whether it was music, phone calls, google, even a simple alarm clock, the iPhone could do it.

The very first iPhone, called the iPhone 2g, was re-leased on June 29, 2007 and received $1.39 million in sales for just that one alone. It had the nickname of the “Jesus Phone”, reasons for it appearing to be so incredible. Though as technology went on, new developments arose, shocking the nation with the iPhone 4. A retina had been created through this phone -the very first phone with it- which is a high resolution display of the screen. Also, a front camera had been added to promote video calling. It was the first iPhone to receive a design change, and was known to be the thinnest smartphone in the world. However, Apple didn’t stop there. New iPhones came out, such as the iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, and so many more. We have now come up to the iPhone 6’s and 7’s. Sales have skyrocketed from $1.39 million to a $231.22 for the iPhone 6. Despite the loss of sales dropping to $211.88, it is rumored that Apple will still renovate the wonderful iPhone. Even more advanced technologies have been executed in these devices, including a “finger-print sign-in” to the phone. Apple continues to surprise us. Even after a decade of incredible phones, people wonder if an iPhone 8 will soon be upon the horizon. We all wait with great anticipation.

A Little January History

By: Hope SeiwertThere are plenty of other significant events that took place in January, but none of us are going to take the time to look them up, so enjoy these free bits of history! On January 3rd in 1959, Alaska was accepted into the United States as the 49th state. We get a free day from school on January 15th because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the day he was born. On January 19th, Ameri-can poet and writer Edgar Allan Poe was born. January 20th carries a certain significance in American history because Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan all officially became President on this day. On January 28th of 1986, the Challenger space shuttle exploded at 11:39 A.M.

The shuttle was about seventy four seconds into its flight and was ten miles above Earth’s surface. Sadly, all seven crew members were killed. On January 31st, 1874, Jesse James and his gang robbed a train in Gads Hill, Missouri. They escaped that night with more than ten thousand dollars in valuables and money.

Brookie on The Street By: Heather Richards and Brooke Foster Have you ever heard of Billy on The Street? If so, you’ll know exactly what to expect in this month's video. If not, then here’s a little bit about the show. Billy Eichner runs around the streets of New York appra-oching random people. He does various things to people, such as asking a question about movies or famous people. Occasionally he may play a game with them. You never know what he’s up to. Sometimes he even gives them a dollar if they guess the question right. He may have a famous person there with him. Billy does all different kinds of games with the people. Some people that he runs up to could either be really nice and ready to play, or they could be pretty mad and just walk away. So after wondering what we could do for this month’s video, we decided to make a video based off of Billy on The Street from truTV. Brooke Foster pretends to be Billy, but in this case, Brookie. For a special guest, we have Jacqueline Strunk. The cameralady and editor of this video is Heather Richards. In the video you will see us chasing after people and a series of questions asked by the one and only Brookie. Some people knew the answer, but not everyone. After you watch the video and want to see more of the craziness, tune in to truTV every Tuesday at 10:30/9:30c to watch the actual Billy on The Street. Below is a QR Code for the Brookie on The Street video! You can join in by downloading the app “CR Code Reader.” It’s free! Just scan the code, and enjoy!

5What’s Vexing Vincent??

By:Vincent Meyer You know what’s vexing Vincent? Having the unpopular opinion, that’s what. You want to know why? Well, I’m about to tell you. Now this is one almost everyone can relate to. Basically, it’s when you’re in a group of people and everyone else agrees to do something completely different from what you want, even if their ideas are stupid. For example, maybe you’re going out to eat with your friends and you’re dead set on going some-where specific. Then you realize that everyone else agrees that the group should eat somewhere else, even if you don’t like eating there. Or maybe you’re starting a group project with some of your classmates, but no one likes any of your ideas and decides they like someone else’s ideas better, even if you think it’s a one-way ticket to a bad grade (and trust me, it is sometimes). This phenomenon occurs (at least to me) far more often that I would like it to. It seems like people go out of their way to unanimously insult my ideas (or assault my eardrums in the most recent case, but that’s a different story). When this happens, I mostly just think “what the heck is wrong with your people? LIKE MY IDEA!” When I’m not thinking that, I’ll think “that idea is garbage and your opinion is wrong,” or something like that. Wait a minute… when did I become the typical internet comment section? Actually, never mind that last question, back to the main topic. I could go on and on about topics that lead to these situations; food, music, movies, political views, sports, video game preferences, and many more leave individuals everywhere subject to the “incorrect” majority ruling. Belittling, isn’t it? If only there was something we could do about it. It would be greatly appreciated if people actually listened to all sides before making a rash decision. After all, maybe one of those ideas is actually worth listening to. Like mine (because my opinions are totally right all of the time). Realistically, though, the opinions of one should not overrule the decisions of the majority. It’s just that it would be nice if that majority sought a middle ground with these people if there requests are reason-able. I can’t really see this changing, though, so maybe we should just suck it up and respect the majority. That, or we can keep complaining. Actually, yeah, complaining sounds much better. After all, I do have a lot of experience with complaining.

6 New Classes

Mrs. Clark has implemented two new classes at Garden Plain. This would include Career Skills and Senior

Internshp. The purpose of these classes are to help students better prepare for their future, making the difficult

decision of what they want to be when they grow up.

Before one enters the workplace, it is important to know how to be as professional as possible. Throughout the classes you will learn, neccessary skills, such as self-introductions, proper attire to wear, writ-ing a good resume, and even how to shake someone’s hand.

I had the privelege of taking Senior Internship last semester. During this class, students will spend three days a week interning in the career of their choice. I encourage each and every one of the underclassmen to take advantage of this great oppurrtunity. It is basically a sneak peak of the working world and what adults go through on a day-to-day basis for their jobs and careers. I highly reccomend this class, especially if you’re cur-rently undecided about your goals after high school. Real world experience will widen your knowledge upon what you may wish to do. If you would like anymore information about the class (including rules and what is expected) you can just ask Mrs. Clark or myself. I hope everyone has a great second semester!
