Aging Gracefully
Taylor Glen’s recent display of Resident wedding pictures came as a pleasant surprise to me.
A lady on our floor commented, after seeing my wedding photo, “I recognized you right away.
Aside from the gray hair and the beard, you look just about the same as you did in your
wedding.”
Strangely enough, I’ve heard that comment before. I had just hit 75 and an air of grouchiness
came with it. Isn’t it odd that we spend a good part of our lives looking forward to birthdays with
great anticipation? Old enough to vote, drive, drink, and join the military.
Who can’t remember waiting and wishing for a birthday that allowed us to do something
special?
Then suddenly, at a certain age, we are apt to discover an urge to stop the clock and halt the
annual celebration. At 75, I told my wife that enough was enough and if we forgot any future
acknowledgement of my increasing physical decline, that would be fine with me. Stop my
birthdays! Save my life!
On the day of my 75th birthday, my wife and I had to attend the funeral of my wife’s friend’s
husband. I can tell you that attending a funeral on your birthday is no fun.
So there we were on a hot August afternoon, surrounded by people we had known for years.
From the crowd a lady approached my wife. “How are you?” she said. “I didn’t see you right
away, but I recognized your husband at once. He hasn’t changed a bit since your wedding.”
I must admit hearing that on your 75th birthday was rather encouraging. Especially for
someone who had been a little down in the mouth and feeling a little sorry for himself.
As we were leaving the funeral, I caught a glimpse of myself in the full-length mirror in the
hall. Vanity kicked in. To my pleasant surprise, aside from some gray hair and a little excess
weight, I looked pretty darn good for a man of 75 years. At that moment, I stopped worrying
about my age..
There I was at a funeral of a man about my age. I was walking out the door at a fairly good
pace, in reasonably healthy shape, and feeling good about myself. Who can ask for anything
better on your birthday?
So I stopped griping about my birthdays. Oh, I accept cards and any gifts offered, but I never
volunteer information about my age anymore.
In fact, I made up my mind that as long as I feel well, instead of adding a year to my
accumulation of years, I will begin deducting a year annually. So this August, as my birthday
rolls around, I will be a year younger that I was last year at this time.
Does this work? I don’t really know. Some mornings as I crawl out of bed, I wonder. But I do
“look good” for a man of my age. Whatever it is by now.

What’s New in Marketing
My first day at Taylor Glen was July 6th. I love being here! Everyone has been so
welcoming to me. And I sure have enjoyed seeing folks that have known me since I
was a little girl growing up in Concord. Some have even called me by my given name!
Since I was born, I was called Anne Garrett- a double name. My parents are Dr.
David and Anne Crosland. My mother’s name was also Anne Garrett Crosland and
she went by “Anne”. So, I guess that is why they always called me Anne Garrett- to
differentiate between us! So, locally I am known as Anne Garrett, but I go by “AG”
also as that seems to be so much easier!
As I mentioned, my Dad, Dr. David Crosland, is a retired OBGYN doctor in Cabarrus
County and delivered quite a few Cabarrus babies in his day! Dad was well known
and well-loved in our community; therefore I am also known as “Anne Garrett, one of
Dr. Crosland’s daughters”. I guess you could say that Dad is my claim to fame!
I am a graduate of NC State University with a degree in Animal Science. I operated
my own horse farm/equine facility for close to 30 years. I trained young Thorough-
bred horses and taught jumping lessons and I broke 15 bones in my body! So finally,
I switched careers to working with people instead of horses. I grew tired of breaking
bones!
I also play guitar and sing! I founded my own church called Burning Bush Ministries
in Mt. Pleasant and was Praise and Worship Leader for 17 years. What a blessing-
playing music for Jesus!!!
My husband is Dennis Diaz and he really is an angel! God greatly blessed me when
he sent Dennis to me. Between the 2 of us, we have 5 boys and 1 grandson! My cup
runneth over!
I know you will all miss Sharon greatly and I know that I have big shoes to fill. With
everyones’ prayers and patience I should be okay! Maybe I will know as much as
Sharon in 18 years!
THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO WELCOMING TO ME! I LOOK FORWARD TO
SPENDING LOTS OF TIME HERE GETTING TO KNOW YOU!
Love in Christ,
Anne Garrett Diaz “AG”

We would like to thank Neill Cameron and Brejetta Wilson! They work
so hard each and everyday so we can enjoy fresh vegetables. The deer
are trying to lessen their load this year, but luckily there are still
plenty of yummy veggies to go around! Brejetta is also responsible for
the BEAUTIFUL flowers in the courtyard, pool patio, etc.
They all look so very pretty!
