Ethical trading initiative When you see the ethical trading logo, it’s your assurance that Border Stone is working harder than ever to ensure our imported natural stone products meet strict ethical criteria.

Border Stone works with our global suppliers to support the principles of the UN Global compact and ETI base code.

Examples of the criteria Border Stone insists our suppliers have to meet are:

Carbon labelling In simple terms, a carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases created during the life of a product from production to use and disposal.

Working with one of the industry’s most respected governing bodies, the Building Research Establishment (BRE), we have developed a system that calculates the carbon footprint for any single unit of Border Stone reconstituted stone product.

Border Stone believes in doing everything we can to help you achieve that perfect garden look. We realise that Border Stone products are heavy and frequently ordered in large quantities.

So, to make life easier, we offer a convenient and straightforward home delivery service. This is particularly useful for larger projects where significant amounts of product are required. Our patio and circle paving packs and the majority of our aggregates in bulk bags can be delivered straight to your property.

Our standard delivery will be made within seven working days on an 18 tonne rigid vehicle with a tail lift and pump truck. This is not a crane off load. Delivery is made to the nearest suitable spot on site, which may be kerbside. Due to the weight of the products the unloading area must be a level firm surface. Lawns and gravel drives are not suitable. Our carrier will contact you prior to delivery to negotiate a mutually convenient delivery day. You will need to be available to sign for goods.

How to... How to lay Border Stone products Specific laying instructions will vary according to the type of Border Stone product you are using and for most products, there are a number of common elements involved. Typically, you will have to mark out the area you plan to excavate and clear it of vegetation. You will also usually have to dig out to the desired level and lay down a subbase, the nature of which depends on the product being laid. After laying, you will probably have to point all the joints.

Sizes and joint widths • Size dimensions quoted within this brochure are nominal and for guidance only.

• Actual sizes will vary, particularly where riven profiles and fettled edges are a feature of the product.

• Always dry lay the product to check area required (especially circles and patio kits).

• See joint widths recommend for products on the product page.

Health and Safety • Due to the nature of our products we always recommend suitable lifting equipment be used.

• Always wear gloves and safety footwear when handling the product.

• Always wear safety goggles and appropriate respiratory protection when cutting is required.

• Always use a high speed cutter.

• Ensure the products are on level ground and retained in some way before removing any packaging.

• Minor scuffing can occur due to movement in transit and will generally disappear in time.

• Always handle with care as breakages and chipping may result from mishandling.

• If in doubt do not lay and consult your garden centre.

Cost Border Stone regrets it is not able to quote recommended retail prices as those are set by the retailer and may be subject to variation.

Application/suitability • Border Stone products and materials, unless otherwise stated, are for domestic landscaping projects.

• Decorative paving is not recommended for use on driveways.

• All products must be checked on arrival and in the unlikely event of products reaching you in a less than satisfactory condition, please

refer to your garden centre immediately, allowing time for the rejected product to be replaced.

• Deicing salts should not be used on the Border Stone range of decorative paving.

Natural stone patio maintenance • Natural stone is low maintenance and hardwearing paving.

• May contain minor imperfections.

• Natural products always vary in colour due to natural pigmentation.

• Always lay natural sandstone on a full mortar bed.

• We recommend polished natural sandstone be sealed.

Reconstituted stone colour • Colours may vary subtly

• Colours will appear different during different weather conditions such as, sunlight and rain. Please check colour samples on dry daylight conditions.

• Where possible, products should be selected from the same product batch.

• Reconstituted stone will weather over time in a similar way to natural stone.

Efflorescence Efflorescence appears on concrete (reconstituted) paving products as white patches or a lightening of the surface colour, but seems to disappear when wet. It is formed by a normal chemical reaction between cement and water which causes calcium hydroxide (lime) to migrate through damp concrete to the paving surface and then react with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulting in a deposit of calcium carbonate crystals. Efflorescence is very unpredictable in its occurrence but is more prevalent in winter when concrete becomes wet and dries more slowly. Although there are cleaners available, efflorescence is a natural phenomenon and will generally disappear with the natural weathering process and the passage of time.
