Hello and welcome to a new gardening year! An early thank you to our
board members, Vijai and Jim for working with me to make this year a
success. Welcome to our four new board members; Steve Beernsten,
Joanne Kondro, Melissa Schmitz, and Mindy Ward.
If you haven’t already done so, I would encourage you to register with
the new online reporting system (Volunteer Management System) for our
Wisconsin Master Gardener Program. Registering is easy and just takes
a few minutes. Access at https://volunteers.wimastergardener.org/vms/
mg_access_form/.
Winter is an excellent time to earn your continuing education hours. We
have a number of opportunities available to us in the classroom and
online. The first session of the Bob Mongin Garden Series was held on
February 2nd, and was a great success; the next session will be March
2nd, and the final session to be held on April 6th. The Wisconsin Garden
Expo w ill be hosting classes in Madison on February 8 th to 10th and
Beginning Beekeeping will be held on February 12 th. If you are
interested, Level 2 Master Gardener Training on Plant Diagnostics is an 8
week class starting February 26th. There are other in-person classes
available in March and April and online training is available all of the
time. Information and registration for these learning opportunities can be
found at https://NEWMasterGardeners.org, https://gbbg.org, and
https://wimastergardener.org. Also keep in mind that Wisconsin Public
Radio offers the weekly Garden Talk; Wisconsin Public Television has the
Wisconsin Gardener, P. Allen Smith’s Garden and the Victory Garden.
I encourage you to check out the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge at
http://millionpollinatorgardens.org/. This is a campaign to register a
million public and private gardens and landscapes to support pollinators.
Thank you to Mindy Ward and her committee of Crystal Brown, Barbara
Brumm, Steve Herro, Joanne Halloway, Jim Radey and Birdie Schantz for
the planning and setup of our MG Community Projects Kickoff. Thank
you also to Trisha Linssen for putting together this newsletter. If you

President’s Welcome—Al Nass - Meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. All Board of Director
meetings will be held at the Green Bay Botanical Gardens the 2nd Wednesday, every other month.
Project Committee Report: Garden Series 2019. Barb Brown reported the committee just
met and all is set for the dates of February 2, “Growing Mosses and Shade Plants” by Dale Sievert;
March 2nd; “Using Bulbs as Companion Plants” by Brent Heath and April 6th, “Success with Cacti and
Other Succulents as House Plants by Dr. Daniel Mahr. She asks that we all promote the series.
Secretary’s Report – Julie Cole The minutes from the September 12, 2018, meeting had been
sent electronically for review by board members. A motion was made by Tim Freeman and seconded by
Trisha Linssen to approve the minutes. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report – Nancy Fictum The 2019 Budget was presented. A few projects are
without a budget.
Advisor’s Report – Vijai Pandian The Level II Training course is set to start February 26,
2019. Nineteen trainees graduated from the Master Gardeners course of 2018. The Brown County UW
Extension will be renamed as UW Madison Division Extension. Logo changes will be coming.
Volunteer Coordinator Report – Jim Radey *Followed up w ith MG Volunteers who hadn ’t
reported volunteer and education hours. *Updated current MG Volunteer list. *Assisted Garden Series
Committee with design and printing of promotional materials. Also, I have been handling registration
for the Garden Series. * Assisting Mindy Ward and Projects Kickoff Committee as needed. Sent
reminders to project leaders about having a display at the event. *Working on update of MG Projects
brochure for the Projects Kickoff Event. Also tried to recruit leaders for projects where necessary. *
Sent out information on Vijai’s upcoming Level 2 MG Plant Diagnostic classes and I am handling
registrations for the course. *Gathered information on request for help with native plant garden and rain
garden at House of Hope. * Worked with Al Nass to put together a “MG Board of Directors” orientation.

WIMGA Report- Doris A. Magyar, WIMGA Rep. The January-2019 issue of the WIMGA newsletter
is out via paper copy (which will be the last one published) and by E-mail contact. This issue contains
the New Year announcements regarding newsletter information. Also, very important in this issue is the
WIMGA Board member at large election information. Please read the candidates statements and vote
either by paper ballot, as instructed; or by E-mail for one selection. In this issue is the listing of 2018
grants as awarded to the various WIMGA member associations. Now is the time for your group to con-
sider applying for a 2019 grant. It is not that hard to do, and it could provide some financial benefit for
your project. Give it a try. Grant information is available on the WIMGA website at http://
www.wimga.org/ then select grants for access.
Endowment Report – Kyle Gigot Balance has gone down a little due to market fluctuation.
Kyle gave an explanation of the endowment along with the balance of the Unrestricted Fund and Scholar-
ship Fund.
Project Committee Report – Project Kick-off 2019 – Mindy Ward reports it will be January 29th, 5-
7:30pm at 1st Floor, Neville Public Museum. Dr. Dean Stewart is our guest speaker, “Servant Leader-
ship”.
New Business:
Adopt-a-Plant Project – Vijai Pandian Head Start is very receptive to this project. Jan
Ackerman, MG, will be contacted to coordinate this project.
Establish criteria for sponsoring outside groups - Vijai suggested criteria is needed to be
sure we are unbiased when approving sponsorship of outside groups. Committee of Trish Linssen,
Nancy Fictum and Julie Cole was formed to come up with guidelines.
Emeritus status of membership. NEW Master Gardeners was formed in the 1970’s and are
one of the few groups that offer Emeritus status in WI. Committee of Mindy Ward, Steve Herro
and Birdie Schantz will review and offer revisions of standard operating policy and by-laws regard-
ing Emeritus status.
Plant Sale Project. Leader is needed. Suggested it be held one week earlier than 2018.
Profit of $1600 in 2018.
House of Hope - They are looking for help from the MG to create a rain garden. I t was de-
cided not to take on the project due to short notice and expertise needed.
Newsletter – any additional articles for the newsletter should be sent to Trisha Linssen,
[email protected] by January 30, 2019. She is looking for articles of
interest to Master Gardeners.
Next Board Meeting – March 13, 2019 .

2019 Robert Mongin Garden Series.
Mr. Mongin was active in the community
through his involvement with the NEW
Master Gardeners, Gardeners Club of
Green Bay, Green Bay Botanical Garden,
Mayor’s Beautification Committee, and
many others. He designed and established
a perennial garden at the former UW-
Extension site at 1150 Bellevue Street,
Green Bay, which was dedicated to Mr.
Mongin during a formal ceremony.
This series is comprised of three different
sessions with renowned garden speakers
who will share their expertise to enhance
your gardening experience.

“Success With Cacti & Other Succu-lents As House Plants”
Dr. Daniel Mahr
Madison, WI
Dr. Dan Mahr was a faculty member of UW-Madison for thirty years in the Department of Entomology. He specialized in agricultural pest management in fruit crops. He retired in 2011 and is now an emeritus faculty in the department. Dan has held many positions in the Cactus and Succulent Society of America and been honored by the society for his work with succulents and cacti. He has had numer-ous articles on succulent plants published as well as had his photography in various books, magazines and journals. Dan has been an in-vited speaker at several cacti and succulents conferences in the US, England and New Zea-land and given over 80 workshops and talks on cacti and succulents. He is a frequent guest on the Larry Meiller Show on Wisconsin Public Radio. Dan has traveled extensively visiting cactus and succulent plants in their native habitats in over 15 countries.

Recap of Mosses & Shade Plants Presentation
As part of the NEW Master Gardener’s Mongin Garden Series, speaker
Dale Sievert presented on “Growing Mosses and Shade Plants.”
Dale grew up on a dairy farm in Manitowoc County and earned a B.S. in
Agronomy and an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. After a short time working as a fieldman for Green
Bay Food Company, he taught economics at Milwaukee Area Technical
College while simultaneously operating a landscaping and nursery
business. He also published five editions of an economics textbook for
colleges.
Since then, Dale has shared his expertise writing about growing mosses
for Sukiya Living, A Journal of Japanese Gardening, and shared his
expertise around the country in many venues. His gardens have appeared in Chicagoland Gardening, The
American Gardener and featured in Country Gardens this past year. Dale shared his expertise about
gardening with mosses and other shade plants as well as shared a photo tour of his celebrated gardens
during his presentation for us.
He was happy to share his list of books and websites for further reading and help in “Growing Mosses
and Shade Plants.”

2019 Level 2 Master Gardener Training
Volunteer Opportunity!
We currently need certified Master Gardeners to coordinate the Master Gardener Plant Sale
Committee and the Heritage Hill Tank Garden Project.
The Plant Sale Coordinator or Co-coordinators will schedule Plant Sale Committee planning
meetings, work with the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator to schedule the day and
location of the Plant Sale, and guide the Plant Sale Committee in putting on this annual event.
The Heritage Hill Tank Garden Coordinator will work with Heritage Hill staff to determine
gardening education activities for youth through the project and help the project committee
take part in education activities and maintenance of the garden.

Become a CSI detector in your garden life! Sign up for an 8-week plant diagnostic training program to
diagnose common pests, diseases and other disorders that affect landscape and garden plants. Classes
will be held at the Neville Public Museums from 6-8 PM every Tuesday commencing Feb 26, 2019. Partic-
ipants will be encouraged to volunteer 2 hours per week at the Horticulture Help Desk during the grow-
ing season (you will be teamed with experienced staff). The schedule is as follows:

2019 Horticulture Classes
Beginning Beekeeping - Tuesday, February 12; 6:00-7:30 PM at the Green Bay
Botanical Garden: Wanted: New Beekeepers! Pollinators are in short supply and
YOU ARE NEEDED! Flora, crops, and trees, that will be producing seeds for regeneration of
fruits and produce for human consumption - all need pollination! Bird seed, livestock feed,
and 1/3 of what we eat, depends on pollinators. Ken Sikora, who has over 25 years of
beekeeping experience, will tell you what clothing and equipment you need, the costs of
beekeeping, where to get bees, determining good location for a hive, and what mentoring
help is available. Learn the answers to why the drones (male bees of the colony) have
grandparents, but not a father and how honey bees and human beings are the only two
species in which members can tell one another the location of important food sources. Cost

Shade Gardening with Hostas – Thursday, March 5; 6:00-7:30 PM, at the Green Bay
Botanical Garden: Kyle Gigot, Master Gardener Volunteer, w ill discuss the basics of
shade gardening, centering on hostas. Learn about the different hosta cultivars available for
your shady environment. Cost is $7 payable to NEW Master Gardeners ($10 at the door). Pre

Seed Starting 101 – Tuesday, March 19; 6:00-7:30 PM, at the Green Bay Botanical
Garden: Join Lynn Clark, Master Gardener Volunteer, to learn the art of grow ing
your own vegetable plants from seeds. Class will include planning, seed selection, growing
mix, equipment, and general knowledge to increase your seed germination success. Cost is

Vegetable Gardening for Beginners – Wednesday, April 24; 6-7:30 PM, at the Green
Bay Botanical Garden: This class w ill cover the basics of vegetable gardening
including planning your garden, prepping your garden soil, selecting vegetables, and growing
