NEPA ComplianceSince the 1970s, Gannett Fleming has been a leader in providing compliance and documentation services in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to federal agencies and state and local partner agencies. AML and AMD ServicesWe know the mining and reclamation industry and how to rapidly identify the unique aspects of each project early in the planning process. From site investigation and assessment to design and permitting, our firm maintains an excellent reputation and working relationship with clients and agencies. This enables us to develop environmentally sensitive and cost-effective reclamation and acid mine drainage (AMD) mitigation strategies.

We work with private individuals, organizations, and government agencies to investigate abandoned mine land (AML) sites relative to watershed assessments, reclamation, and hydrologic studies. We also assess and mitigate AMD through passive and active treatment technologies; design and construction specifications; NPDES and environmental permitting; construction observation; and sustainable project planning.

EMS and ComplianceAn environmental management system (EMS) offers organizations an ongoing process and a powerful tool to improve business practices and enhance environmental performance. Integrated Water ResourcesGannett Fleming recognizes the constant challenge of administering, protecting, and conserving water resources to meet future demands and community requirements. We are committed to providing integrated water resource services to protect and sustain the quality and availability of the world’s natural and drinking water supplies.

Safe Yield Studies and Water SupplyWe have completed studies and investigations ranging from a single reservoir to complex composite systems that include multiple reservoirs, wells, river intakes, and transmission facilities. We collect hydrologic, hydraulic, and system operating data and develop a custom program to simulate the daily operation of each unique water supply system.

These studies are used to evaluate system expansions; provide data for water supply permit applications; aid in negotiations for instream flow requirements; investigate availability of surplus water; optimize operating procedures; and develop drought contingency plans.

Flood Risk ManagementOur rich history of supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program dates back to the 1970s. Originally, we served as technical evaluation contractor for FEMA. This included several hundred detailed hydrologic and hydraulic studies, delineation of flood prone areas for communities, and program management support for 21 states in the eastern U.S. Since 2003, our firm has been supporting FEMA’s Map Modernization and Risk MAP programs. This work includes FEMA contracts which support state Cooperative Technical Partners during Map Modernization and provides production and technical services as part of Risk MAP.

Water and WastewaterWe have planned, designed, and provided construction management for hundreds of water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations ranging in size from 0.1 to 400 mgd, in addition to thousands of miles of sewer systems. We evaluate and optimize the ability of all types of water and wastewater treatment facilities in order for our clients to successfully satisfy state and U.S. EPA regulations. Gannett Fleming has experience with all sizes and types of facilities using current technologies and a green approach to achieve innovative and practical designs.

Potable water applications include membrane filtration, brackish reverse osmosis, and seawater reverse osmosis plants. Wastewater reclamation assignments involve membrane bioreactor, membrane filtration, and reverse osmosis plants. We also employ state-of-the-art biological nutrient removal processes and toxics control, as well as plan and design new facilities to meet reuse regulations.

Dams, Levees, and Flood Damage ReductionProviding critical benefits to society, dam and levee systems supply water, fuel hydropower, reduce flood damage, and promote recreation. Gannett Fleming provides engineering for dams from concept through construction and startup. We are helping to rebuild our nation’s critical infrastructure through experience, innovation, and technical excellence.

Fish PassagesOur engineers and scientists understand that human activities often affect aquatic habitats. We routinely restore and enhance these habitats as part of our comprehensive sustainable watershed management.

Gannett Fleming’s fishway designs have included vertical slot, pool and weir, Denil, Alaskan steeppass, and nature-like fishways. We develop unique fish passage solutions that entail installation of inflatable dams and weirs, automatic gates to regulate entrance flow conditions, and state-of-the-art video systems to record fish passage. Our concepts emphasize successful performance and low maintenance. Our engineers and scientists work closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other fish behavior experts to maximize the effectiveness of each passageway.

Site Evaluations and RemediationOur firm is an accomplished site investigation and remediation firm. We have conducted thousands of site assessments and underground storage tank site closures; and hundreds of successful remedial actions, including work at numerous Superfund sites.

Our diverse capabilities include remedial design; tank management; pollution prevention plans; and solid and hazardous waste management. We effectively use our engineering, risk, and modeling resources to negotiate no-action alternatives or in-situ solutions that remediate sites in less time and for less money, while satisfying the regulatory community.

ESA and ESI

A Phase I and a Phase II environmental site assessment (ESA) and environmental site investigation (ESI) establish baseline environmental data used in formulating sound business decisions. An ESA and an ESI can affect the financing or the acquisition of commercial, industrial, and undeveloped real estate properties.

We have conducted thousands of Phase I and Phase II ESAs and ESIs nationwide at sites ranging from small undeveloped lots to large industrial facilities. We employ industry-renowned and U.S. EPA (All-Appropriate Inquiry Standard)-recognized environmental professionals to successfully conduct Phase I ESA reports.

Risk Assessment and ManagementWe are dedicated to the cost-effective management of contaminated sites using a risk-based, decision-making process and litigation support. Our firm is internationally recognized in fate and transport modeling, human health risk assessment, and regulatory interactions. Services and capabilities include:

Vapor Intrusion and Mitigation

Vapor Intrusion, the migration of volatile chemicals from the subsurface into overlying buildings, has become a significant environmental issue for regulators, brownfield developers, industry, and concerned residents. Our firm designs and retrofits vapor mitigation systems to existing buildings and designs vapor barriers and passive sub-slab venting systems for new construction. We perform the following vapor intrusion tasks for a wide range of sites and clients.

• Vapor well and sub-slab probe installation• Sub-slab and adjacent-to-slab soil vapor

profiling• Indoor and ambient (outdoor) air sampling• Evaluation of soil vapor movement across

building slabs• U.S. EPA Johnson and Ettinger (J&E)

Green Remediation

Green remediation considers the environmental impacts of remedy implementation and integrating strategies to maximize the net environmental benefit of cleanup actions. Our firm uses technologies and strategies that consider the environmental impacts and effects of existing and future remedy implementation and operation. Our goal is to minimize the environmental “footprint” of processes and actions taken during the project cycle.
