At 10 am on January 22 the active members of Gamma chapter began the gruelling challenge of pedaling a stationary bike on campus for 48 hours non stop, through the night, through the rain, and through the cold. All 16 active members donated at least three hours of their time between January 22nd and January 24th to help raise over $1,200 for Push America. Most donations came in the form of one dollar donations from passer bys who were given incentives to donate as the chapter also raffled off an IPod and gift certificates to local restaurants.

The chapter’s efforts did not go unnoticed by the campus community as the Daily Cal decided to write about the event and staff members from the Office of Student life also worked closely with the chapter in making the Bike-A-Thon a successful event. Support not only came from the campus community, but from those in the community as well including Mike’s Bikes who donated the stationary trainer for the event, and Jamba Juice and Cheese Board Pizza provided gift certificates to be given away in the raffle. The event proved to be successful in promoting a side of social fraternities that often goes overlooked and unnoticed by the greater Cal community. Dear Alumni,

The Spring semester got started off with a bang with our first 48 hour cyclethon in which we raised over $1,200 dollars for Push America. Rush followed immediately and with it, the grand unveiling of our homemade 9 hole miniature golf course. This event had a huge draw and at the height of the night, every hole had at least 2 rushees. At the conclusion of rush, we ended up with 7 freshmen associate members, all extremely excited for the upcoming semester. This brings our numbers up to 23 brothers and associates, quite an improvement from our re-founding class of 13. Our first activity followed less than a week later, at which all the new associates had a blast. Already I see the new pledge class becoming involved in the chapter, a great sign for the future of Pi Kappa Phi.

As many of you already know, the centennial of the Gamma chapter is fast approaching, and preparations are already underway for this grand celebration. I urge all alumni members to attend this special anniversary and if you have time, we would greatly appreciate any help you would like to offer in planning this joyous event. If interested in either planning or attending, please contact Juan Serrano ‘91 at [email protected].

On a final note, the chapter house on 2908 Channing Way needs your help. After housing Pi Kapps for so many years, repairs are greatly needed! We want to see this great old house restored to its original condition in anticipation of our alumni homecoming for the centennial. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated to help fund our restoration process. If interested in donating, please contact Juan as well. Through your support, the Gamma chapter of Pi Kappa Phi will flourish for another hundred years!

Sincerely,

Harris Kashtan ’04Archon, Gamma Chapter

As some of you know, Gamma Chapter was founded by Theodore Barnwell Kelley on December 8, 1908 when he initiated a group of Berkeley students against the National Fraternity’s wishes. National’s Gamma initiation date is January 11, 1909 when one of the Founding Fathers came out to Berkeley to “officially” initiate the members of the Chapter. Either way we will be celebrating 100 years on the Cal campus later this year.

To celebrate this anniversary, the Alumni Association has authorized the creation of a Centennial Commission to plan out the festivities. Some of the ideas we are beginning to consider include a weekend long event. The weekend would include an off-campus cocktail celebration on Friday night, an open house on Saturday, and a formal celebration on Saturday evening that would include a silent auction. We need 12-20 alumni from various generations to partner with our local chapter in making this celebration happen.

Our initial planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday April 5th at the chapter house. If you are interested in participating please contact Juan Serrano ’91 at (510.604.4450 or [email protected]) before March 31, 2007.

Gamma chapter celebrated Pi Kappa Phi’s 104th anniversary by hosting a Founder’s Day dinner on December 8th at Skates on the Bay, a restaurant by the Berkeley Marina. All sixteen of the active brothers including the four associate members were in attendance in addition to the lovely dates that many of them brought. Approximately ten alumni also participated in the dinner. The guests enjoyed a three-course meal in a beautiful dining room built over the San Francisco Bay with a spectacular view of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The meal started with either a garden or caesar salad. It was followed by a choice of entrees, including roasted chicken, king crab, and pasta with a seafood cream sauce. Finally, as the setting sun flooded the restaurant with amber, sorbet and chocolate cake were brought out for dessert. Over dessert the archon, Harris Kashtan ’04, kicked off the banking, although it was not as hilarious as last years. I attribute this to the fewer alumni present as well as the presence of other guests in the dining room. But, for at least one night the undergrads of Gamma Chapter were able to put the pizza and ramen noodles down, put on a nice suit and indulge in a real gourmet meal. It was a delicious dinner and unfortunately Founder’s Day comes but once a year.

Knowing that this was such an important semester for rush, we decided we needed a fun, original, flagship event to kickoff the week. By the time we had finished planning everything out, we had two. As everyone filtered back to Berkeley off of the winter holidays, we began to build a nine-hole miniature golf course inside the house (the only miniature golf course within 20 miles of the city of Berkeley!). Conceptualized by our resident architecture major, Andy Gyr ’06, the course included a loop-the-loop, jumps, bridges, and of course, our Greek letters. The course provided a great backdrop for our first night, as well as during the rest of the week. Its durable construction and ease of storage could make this a signature event for years to come.

Our second inspiration, a 48-hour continuous cyclethon, even served several purposes beyond rush. Working in two-hour shifts, we rode and tabled on Sproul Plaza from 10 am Tuesday, the first day of classes, until 10 am Thursday, the first day of rush. We garnered media attention both from the Daily Cal and the local news, and by combining the event with a raffle and asking for donations from parents, managed to raise over $1,200 for PUSH America. The icing on the cake was that those hours fulfilled the last requirement of the sanctions on our chapter from 2005.

In addition to our cycling and our golf course, we managed to put together a fun week of events with great brother participation, with the sixteen actives recruiting a pledge class of seven freshman. Drew Sheehy, Adam Shahar, Mike Dreibelbis, Ben Perez, Carlos Soriano, Charles Leon, and Cary Smith round out a promising class, and with the last three being members of the Cal Band, we can thank brother John Doylemason ’07 for bringing in so many friends to our rush, as well as look forward to a connection with one of the more involved, spirited student groups on campus.

With the associate member period beginning, and planning for next semester’s rush now underway, we would like to encourage our alumni to visit, and get to know the young men who are working to build the future of the Gamma chapter of Pi Kappa Phi at Cal. Nothing creates a sense of connection to the great history of this fraternity like getting to know those who lived it. Thank you all for the time, money, and effort that you have donated into giving us a foundation to build upon.

Respectfully,

Mark Kashtan ’06Vice Archon

Please join us in supporting the recently re-chartered Gamma chapter. Many alumni have already pledged their support to Gamma and now we ask for your support too.

Our goal is to help the undergraduate chapter achieve and maintain a level of excellence. To do this, we need to raise at least $15,000 annually to meet the expenses associated with newsletters, our website, and events. We also need to plan for necessary capital improvements, while increasing funds to support educational and scholarship programs.

The Alumni Association is also proud to offer a Gamma Chapter scholarship fund. This fund in particular will help us defray the ever-increasing education costs for our members by allowing us to supply scholarships specifically to Gamma members.

Whether it be our Housing Fund or our Scholarship Fund, your support will make a significant difference for Gamma. We thank you for your loyal and continued support.

George Lineer ’47 was born in San Francisco to George F. and Dorothy Alden Becker Lineer, the eldest of three children. His father was a noted swimming coach and later swimming editor for the

San Francisco Chronicle. His mother was a world class swimmer, who would nearly made the 1924 USA Olympic swim team. George graduated from Lowell High School in January 1942 and started college at U.C. Davis. When Davis was taken over by the Army as an officer’s training school, George attended

Modesto J.C. until he was called up for the Navy’s V12 program at U.C. Berkeley and later College of the Pacific where he met his future bride, Lorraine (Laurie) Marshall. The Navy then sent George to New York for midshipman’s school. One day on leave he and a friend went to the top of the Empire State Building where he happened to meet Laurie who also was visiting the building! He and Laurie married August 1, 1948. After his military service, George returned to U.C. Berkeley where he pledged Gamma chapter in about 1947 and graduate in 1949 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He worked for a number of engineering firms until 1959, when he moved his family to Sacramento to work for the California Department of Water Resources, retiring in 1989. Over the years George passionately pursued his many diverse interests including opera and duplicate bridge. He was considered to be one of the top tournament bridge players in the area. He wrote several books on learning and improving one’s bridge as well as teaching classes.

George passed away at Eskaton Village Carmichael two days shy of his 84th birthday. Brother Lineer is survived by his wife, Laurie; three children, Martha, Thomas and Megan, their spouses; four grandchildren, two sisters, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Lorraine “Laurie” M. Lineer can be reached at 3939 Walnut Avenue, #245 , Carmichael, Ca 95608.

In another attempt to help alumni stay current, we plan to announce major personal events. In order to allow for corrections, many events will be announced in more than one edition. Although we reserve the right to misspell brother’s names with or without reason, misspelling the names of wives and children is not ideal and we apologize ahead of time. Please send all updates and corrections to Ryan Panos ’95 at [email protected].

Fire CAptAin SCruGGSDave Scruggs (grad ’78) was a part of the first pledge class (’74) in the 2908 Channing house, also lettering in boxing three times. He has spent nearly thirty

years in the defense and space systems industry including 19.5 years at Government Systems, 6+ years at Condor Systems and most recently at Lockheed Space Systems in Sunnyvale

working on Flight Software for the AEHF Satellite. Moving to Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1984, Dave also joined the volunteer fire department 20 years ago. He contributes to his community in this way for many reasons, including using it as a diversion from this small town’s two drinking establishments. He has been a captain with the department for 7 years.

Dave and Joanne have been married for 28 years. They have 4 children, 3 girls and a boy. The oldest girl married a San Jose firefighter this summer. Dave makes it clear that grandparenthood is not in the cards at this time. Dave is best found at [email protected] or [email protected] - 831-338-6718(H) and 408-742-2535(W).
