PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The month of November is
the time to remember all the things we
can be thankful for: faith, family,
friends, DKG sisters, etc. The fresh air
outside gives us the energy to hike,
garden, or to do whatever outside
activities we enjoy.
This meeting will be special with six new
members to induct. I look forward to
getting to know them. I am very proud
of Gamma Omega for stepping in and
helping where help is needed. Let’s
show our new members what it means
to be DKG sisters! We are the best
Chapter ever…
Be sure to email me when you find the
hidden symbol….φφφφ See you at the November meeting. May God bless!

MISSION STATEMENT
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.
MEMBER NEWS Heather reports: I attended the US Pocono Reunion in New Orleans, September 16-19, 2018. We had a tour of the Warehouse where the Mardi Gras floats are stored and made. That was extremely interesting. They just reopened the new WWII Museum because of the hurricane. It was fascinating going there. There was a 50 minutes film narrated by Tom Hanks that included Muslini thru Churchill and Roosevelt. It brought back a lot of young memories for me. Mackie and Mary Ann reported: My sister and I just returned from Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. We enjoyed visiting with friends, touring, and attending the spectacular Balloon Festival! The Somerville graduating class of 1968 celebrated their 50th anniversary of graduating from high school on October 12-13. Carol Brinkman was the Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade, and Linda Pinkerton was inducted into the Somerville Ex-Students Hall of Fame. Shelley reports: My husband, Brad Niess, has written a play that has been picked up by a theatre in Brooklyn, NY, to be produced in January. We will be going over the MLK break because the company wants the playwrite there for a talk after the final performance.

Reaching Out to Others
I know our Chapter will continue
to step up and provide support for
Focusing Families. Linda
Herrmann thanks you for your
support in October with a big
haul of goodies. This month we
would like to collect cool weather
items such as long pj’s, hats
sweaters/hoodies, gloves, jackets,
coats, etc. Let’s show that we care
and bring another big haul to
share with those in need.
We will also take up a special
collection for the church to show
our appreciation for the use of
their building. Bring your change
and extra cash to share!

Health Hint (Medlife & Health p. 4 vol 9 issue 2) The truth about chickpeas Chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans, are hearty pulses best known as the star ingredient in hummus, a Middle Eastern dip that enjoys widespread popularity in the US. Chickpeas taste great in homemade hummus and as salad toppers. You can
also roast them in an oven until they’re crispy for a protein-rich snack. Like all pulses, chickpeas are an excellent source of lean, plant-based protein. An ounce of chickpeas contains 30 percent more protein than an ounce of ground beef. Chickpeas are also abundant in potassium, magnesium and iron, making them a great post-workout recovery snack. Don’t Drain the Can! Chickpea juice can be used as a substitute for egg whites in everything from meringues to mayonnaise!
Orientation
Our Orientation was held at the Guadalajara Restaurant in Brenham on October 18. We enjoyed meeting our new members-to-be, Kristie Barker, Kay Ivy, Stephanie Koehler, Joy Ann Kroeger, Paola Salgado, and Debbie Watkins (not pictured). Also shown are Joyce Whitehead, Treva Bullard, and Gladys Avis. Anna Breddin gave the orientation presentation to the group. The new members will be initiated at the November meeting.
Pineapple Crunch Cake From Gail’s kitchen
Cake:
2 cups sugar 2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda 2 tsp vanilla
2 cups crushed pineapple, undrained 1 cup coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
Icing: 1 stick butter 1 ½ cups sugar
1 cup evaporated milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients, add remaining cake
ingredients and stir until combined. Pour into greased 9x13 pan and bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. During the last few minutes of baking time, combine icing ingredients in a
small saucepan. Bring to boil and cook for 2 minutes. Remove cake from oven and pour half of icing evenly over cake.
Run a butter knife around edge to loosen cake from pan. When icing
soaks into cake (a few minutes), pour remaining icing evenly over top. The icing will soak into the cake, making it very moist. If you prefer a drier cake, let the cake cool completely before pouring
the icing over the top.
Student Scholarships
Sue Wieprecht would like to have all applications for scholarships in by the November meeting. Applicants may mail their paperwork or members may bring it to the meeting for them.
