NEW HAVEN >> Foran senior Luke Edmondson has been taught to wrestle to the whistle. That
practice allowed Edmondson to capture the State Open championship Saturday.
Down 10 to Notre DameFairfield’s Hakim Fleming in the heavyweight division, Edmondson scored
a point on a stall to tie the match and then won the title on an escape as time expired in the third

period.
“In practice coach always tells us — he repeats it over and over — wrestle until the ref blows the
whistle,” Edmondson said. “If he blows the whistle and you don’t hear it, then he’ll just touch you to
stop you. So, yes, I just kept wrestling until I hear that whistle.”
It was the first State Open title for Edmondson, who finished as the runnerup in the same division
last season.
“I learned the atmosphere is a lot different (at the Open) then a normal wrestling day,” Edmondson
said. “There’s so many people cheering and yelling, so it’s hard to stay focused on the match but you
just have to try your best and do what you do.”
Edmondson won his third straight Class M title this season. His victory over Ledyard’s Shawn
Hundley lifted the Lions to the team championship.
“It means so much to me,” Edmondson said about his State Open win. “Like Class Ms, I’m sure it’s
not going to hit me until the ride home, but I worked so hard.”
Edmondson acknowledged his teammate, 220pounder Patrick Grinder, for being instrumental
during this past week at practice.
“All my teammates that came and helped when they didn’t have to, like my good friend, Patrick
Grinder,” Edmondson said. “He got knocked out in Class Ms (and didn’t qualify for the Open), and I
asked him to come to practice. He practiced all week with me. It definitely helped me get better and
stay in shape for this.”
New Fairfield edged Danbury 115.5112.5 to win the team championship. Alec Opsal (120) and Avery
Shay (138) were both victorious for the Rebels.

Fairfield Warde senior Charles Kane captured the title at 145 pounds.
“It feels real good, especially since this is my senior year,” Kane said. “I won’t be able to get the
chance to do it again.
Kane’s brother, Timmy, a junior, placed first at 132. Both won titles last season. Warde placed sixth
overall.
“It was nice (for both brothers to win),” Charles Kane said. “It’s nice to be going home and both
having brackets in the car.”
Foran finished seventh. Sophomore Ryan Luth (132) and junior Michael Ross (145) both placed
third. Luth defeated New London’s Alejandro Paulino in the consolation round. Paulino defeated
Luth for the Class M title last week.
“I feel good about it,” Luth said. “I was able to come back from the loss at Ms. I kind of redeemed
myself there. I’m happy with it.”
Hand’s Connor Sakmar was fourth at 106, Branford’s Willie Gambardella was sixth at 120, Haddam
Killingworth’s Grayson Adler was fourth at 152 and Shelton’s Dan Persson was sixth at 182. Foran
junior Gino Esposito finished fifth at 113.
“I think we did well,” Foran coach Dave Esposito said. “It takes a lot of courage when you lose in that
quarterfinal round to come back and win four, five, six matches in a row to take third place. We had
two guys that did that. Taking third place at a tournament like this is sometimes harder than taking
first. I’m real proud of the way they fought back.”
