With the game knotted at two entering the top of the seventh, the Johnnies exploded for three runs in the inning. Mike Antico led off the frame with a solo shot to right field, his first of the season, to put the Red Storm ahead by a run. Later in the inning, Matt Woods registered the first extra-base hit of his St. John’s tenure with a double to right before coming around to score on a Valente single to center in the following at-bat. Before the frame was through, Robert Boselli III would add another RBI base knock, bumping the Red Storm’s advantage to three. Over the final three innings Red Storm reliev- ers forced the Tar Heels to strand five baserunners, preserving the St. John’s advantage and allowing the Johnnies to escape with another marquee victory. The victors in each of their first seven contests last season, the Johnnies have registered a 4-0 start in back-to-back campaigns for the first time in more than five decades. The last time that St. John’s recorded starts of 4-0 or better in consecutive seasons came in 1966 and 1967, the former of which saw the Johnnies reach the College World Series for the third time in program history. The Red Storm’s win over the Tar Heels marks the third-straight year that the Johnnies have picked up at least one victory over a top 10 opponent during regular season play. In 2016, the Red Storm captured the finale of a three-game set against No. 9 Florida State before grabbing two wins over top 10 teams in 2017. Last season, the Johnnies toppled No. 9 Coastal Carolina, then the defending national champions, in its fourth game of the year before besting No. 7 North Carolina just over a week later. The key to the Red Storm’s early season success this year has been its pitching. After finish- ing eighth in the country last season with a 3.11 team ERA, the Johnnies have sliced that number by more than 75 percent so far in 2018, allowing just three earned runs in their first four games for an ERA of 0.74. Five of the eight hurlers that the Red Storm have used so far this season have an ERA of 0.00, while the other three all sport marks of 1.80 or better. As a staff, the Johnnies have registered 41 strikeouts and surrendered just 11 walks while allow- ing opponents to hit a meager .186. Kevin Magee, Saturday’s projected starter, was named to the first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the season after striking out a career-high 11 bat- ters and walking none in six innings of work against Campbell last weekend. Offensively, four members of the Red Storm have recorded hits in each of the team’s first four games. With a pair of three-hit performances under his belt already, Jamie Galazin leads the squad with a .471 batting average. Graduate student John Valente (.421) has tallied two hits in each of the Red Storm’s first four games , while Luke Stampfl, a graduate transfer from Fordham, is hitting .389 with a team-best three extra-base hits. Alongside Ma- gee, Stampfl was also named to Monday’s BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Josh Shaw, a Cape Cod League All-Star this past summer, also has hits in each of his first four games. ST. JOHN’S VS. MONMOUTH, UMBC, PENN STATE- THE SERIES HISTORY• The Red Storm has history with every team taking part in this weekend’s tournament

at the home of USA Baseball. St. John’s has played Monmouth twice, splitting a doubleheaderwiththeHawksonMarch17,2002.TheJohnniesmetUMBCforthefirsttime in 2017, outscoring the Retrievers, 23-3, over the course of two wins. Penn State and St. John’s have faced off against one another 18 times dating back to 1957 with the Red Storm holding a 12-6 advantage all-time. Before their last contest in February of 2009, a 15-6 win for the Johnnies at the BIG EAST-Big Ten Challenge, St. John’s and Penn State last met in 1984. In that season-opening win for the Red Storm in 2009, a freshman shortstop by the name of Joe Panik made his collegiate debut, going 3-for-6 with an RBI triple and two runs scored.

JOHNNIES PICKED TO WIN BIG EAST AGAIN• In December, the Red Storm was predicted to win the BIG EAST by the league’s coaches

for the fourth-straight season.• TheJohnniesgarneredfiveofsixpossiblefirst-placevotes(coachescouldnotvotefor

• In2017,theBIGEASTreceivedmultiplebidstotheNCAAfieldof64forthefirsttimesince realignment, as the Johnnies secured an automatic bid after entering Memorial Day with a record of 42-11.

• Creightonwasselectedthird, followedbySetonHallinfourthandButlerinfifth.Georgetown and Villanova rounded out the poll in slots six and seven, respectively.

MOONEY, BROCATO GRAB MAJOR PRESEASON AWARDS• In addition to being selected as the conference favorite, the Red Storm was also well

represented in the league’s preseason awards.• Sean Mooney, who in 2017 became just the second player in conference history to be

named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year simultaneously, was unanimously selected as the Preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year.

• In addition to his recognition from the conference, Mooney also garnered Preseason All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

• Anthony Brocato, who tied for the team lead with 47 RBIs and paced the squad with eight home runs, was named the Preseason BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year alongside Butler’s Tyler Houston.

• Three other Johnnies earned spots on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, as Josh Shaw, John Valente and Joe LaSorsa found places on the squad. All three garnered all-conferencehonorsin2017,asShawandValentewerenamedtothefirstteamwhileLaSorsa took home second-team accolades.

MOONEY’S MAGNIFICENT FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN• Entering last season, Sean Mooney was far from a blue chip recruit. He ranked 500th

nationally according to Perfect Game and was the no. 225 among right-handed pitching recruits. Even among those in those recruits in the state of New Jersey he ranked no. 17 overall and no. 7 among right-handed pitchers. Teammates and fellow hurlers Jeff Belge (no. 36), Gavin Hollowell (no. 320) and Nick Mondak (no. 329) all drew more praise from scouts than the seemingly undersized Mooney.

• At the conclusion of the season, Mooney was named an All-American by three separate publications, earning third-team status from the ABCA, the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

RED STORM RETURNS PLENTY OF PITCHING• In total, the Red Storm returns 12 arms from last year’s pitching staff, a crew that ranked

eighth nationally with an ERA of 3.11.• Of the 500.1 innings tossed by Red Storm pitchers last season, the Johnnies welcome back

438 (87.5%) of those frames in 2018.• The team also returns 38 of its 42 wins.

MAGEE, LoPRESTI LOOK TO BUILD OF LATE 2017 SUCCESS• In addition to Friday ace Sean Mooney returning to the Red Storm, the other two members

of the Johnnies’ late-season weekend rotation will take the mound once again this spring in Queens.

• Kevin Magee, who was limited to just 40.1 innings in 2017 after missing nearly two months withinjury, putforthaterrificpostseasoneffortfortheJohnnies.IntheRedStorm’sfirstofthreeeliminationgamesintheBIGEASTTournament,Mageestrungtogetherfiveframesof two-run ball, striking out seven before the Johnnies made an offensive charge late to come away with victory against Seton Hall. The following week at the Clemson Regional, Magee tallied career highs in innings pitched (7.0) and strikeouts (8) while surrendering just two runs to UNCG and retiring 15-straight batters between the second and seventh innings. Unfortunately, the Red Storm could only muster one run on offense and was eliminated by the Spartans. On the year, opponents hit just .209 off Magee.

• Also hampered by persistent injury last season, Michael LoPresti still managed to patch togetheraterrificcampaign.TheWayne,N.J.,nativefinishedthirdontheteaminwinswitha record of 6-1. In that game, the right-hander retired the last 11 Bluejay batters he faced.

BELGE SLIMS DOWN, ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL SUMMER ON THE CAPE• A 32nd round pick of the Boston Red Sox out of high school in 2016 who entered that draft

in the top 50 of some draft boards, Jeff Belge laid the foundation for a successful collegiate career in 2017.

• The powerful 6-foot-5 southpaw compiled a record of 3-3 in 14 appearances, nine of which were starts, while turning in an ERA 5.36 with a .263 opponent batting average.

• This past summer, Belge enjoyed a successful stint with the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod League, starting six of his seven appearances and posting a 4.05 ERA to go along with a 1-2 record during regular season play. The lefty struck out 24 in 26.2 frames of work.

• Those who have not seen Belge since last season will immediately notice a change in physique, as the Syracuse, N.Y., native dropped 15 pounds since leaving campus at the start of last summer.

than the Johnnies. • BeginningwiththeirfirstofsixCollegeWorldSeriesappearancesin1949,theJohnnieshave

BLANKMEYER BUILDS LEGACY OF SUCCESS• In his 23rd season at the helm of the St. John’s baseball program, Ed Blankmeyer has

cemented himself as one of the top coaches not only in the Northeast, but in all of collegiate baseball.

• Blankmeyer has taken home BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors seven times during his tenure at St. John’s, a conference record, and has claimed victory in 323 BIG EAST games, more than any other coach in league history.

• Blankmeyer has extensive experience at the national level as well, most recently serving as the manager of the Collegiate National Team in the summer of 2015 before joining on as an assistant coach for the Premier12 squad in the fall. The Premier12 team was coached by former Mets manager and six-time MLB All-Star Willie Randolph.

• In January, Blankmeyer received one of the highest honors the profession has to offer, earning induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. BlankmeyerbecamethethirdSt.John’scoachtofindaspotintheABCAHall, joininghis his predecessors Jack Kaiser and Joe Russo. Since 1956, St. John’s Baseball has had just three coaches, all of whom are now Hall of Famers.

ST. JOHN’S ENJOYS UNPARALLELED BIG EAST SUCCESS• St. John’s has claimed the BIG EAST title on eight occasions, far and away the most for

school in the conference.• DatingbacktothefirstyearofBIGEASTbaseballin1985,noteambesidesSt.John’s

• The Red Storm also owns a conference record with eight BIG EAST Regular Season Championships and sports a 451-281-1 overall mark in league play for a winning percentage of .616.

JOHNNIES SEE FIVE SIGNED TO PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTS IN 2017• A consistent provider of talented players to the next level, St. John’s saw three of its

players taken in the 2017 MLB Draft. Jesse Berardi heard his name called in the 10th Round (312th overall) by the Cleveland Indians, Troy Dixon was taken in the 20th Round (603rd overall) by Seattle, and Michael Donadio received his nod in the 30th Round (899th overall) from the Miami Marlins.

• In the weeks following the draft, two more St. John’s players signed professional con-tracts with Major League organizations, as Ryan McAuliffe inked a deal with the Mets and Kyle Cunningham tagged on with the Rockies.

• Ofthosefivesignees, fourenteredtheprofessionalrankswithdegreesinhand, while Berardi, a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American returned to campus at the conclusion of the 2017 minor league season to complete the coursework for his bachelorsinfinance.

• Over the last six years, St. John’s has averaged 3.7 draft picks per season.

ST. JOHN’S INSTALLS STATE-OF-THE-ART TURF AT JACK KAISER STADIUM• Baseball in the Northeast is never easy. Winters overstay their welcome and rainy

springs often make for shortened schedules and grueling early-season road trips. • This year, St. John’s will hopefully gain some relief from the trials and tribulations

of Northeast baseball, as the University committed more than 1.6 million dollars to installstate-of-the-artfieldturfatJackKaiserStadium.

JOHNNIES RETURN STRONG CORE OF RELIEVERS• In addition to the team’s loaded weekend rotation, the Red Storm also welcomes

back four relievers that turned in ERAs below 3.50 last season.• Sophomore Gavin Hollowell led the team in ERA (1.65) and saves (3) last year,

compilinga2-1recordin19appearances.The6-foot-7,210poundfireballerisanintimidating presence on the mound, holding opponents to a team-best .191 batting average out of the pen as a freshman.

• Classmate Joe LaSorsa ranked third on the team with 21 appearances in 2017, turning in a record of 7-1 to go along with one save. LaSorsa ranked third on the team with 50.0 innings pitched, registering eight outings of three frames or more.

• Juniors Joe Kelly and Turner French topped the team in appearances last season with 25 and 24, respectively. Kelly went 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA and proved nearly unhittable in the beginning part of the campaign, carrying a sub-one into the month of May.
