PORTS ALUMNI
STOCKTON, CA—Gary Sheffield was one of the most productive Ports in franchise history, and now holds a place among the most productive hitters in Major League history.
He was a California League All-Star and was named the California League Rookie of the Year in 1987, and was the most recent Ports player to win that award until Chris Carter was honored last season. Sheffield led the California League in RBI with 103.
That season, he batted .277 with 23 doubles, 3 tri-ples, 17 home runs, 103 RBI and had 25 stolen bases. Even in his second professional season, opposing pitchers feared his hitting prowess. Sheffield was walked 81 times in 129 games that season with the Ports.
Following his performance with the Ports that season, Base-ball America named him the top prospect in the Milwaukee organization and the California League.
Sheffield, a first round draft pick (sixth selection overall) in the 1986 First-Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and a 1980 Little League World Series alumnus, is still swinging a big stick 22 years later.
In fact, he became the first Ports alumnus to join the 500 home run club. Sheffield entered the 2009 season with 499 career home runs, needing just one more monster shot to join the ranks of some of the best hitters in Major League history.
Sheffield became the 25th player to join that pres-tigious club, reaching the plateau on April 17, 2009, slamming a full-count pitch about 385 feet off Mil-waukee pitcher Mitch Stetter in Citi Field, the new New York Mets ballpark.
“Just to join that 500 club, you know. Now I can say
I’m in the club and, you know, it’s like getting your degree,” Sheffield told the media following the game. “Nobody can never take that away from you.”
Sheffield entered the game as a pinch hitter, and the home run was just his second in his long career as a pinch hitter. Sheffield became the fourth-oldest player to hit 500 at the age of 40 years and 143 days old.
He is also the fifth active player to have 500 or more home runs, joining the ranks of Ken Griffey Jr. (613), Alex Rodriguez, (553), Jim Thome (543) and Manny
Ramirez (527). He is also the sixth player to have 500 home runs plus at least 200 stolen bases, 2,500 hits and 1,500 RBI.
Since leaving the Ports, Sheffield quickly became a terrific major league player. He made his major league debut on September 3, 1988 at Detroit, entering the game as a defensive replacement at short-stop.
His first major league hit came on September 9 against Seattle—a solo home run.
Sheffield is a nine-time All-Star , and a four-time Silver Slugger Award winner, earning those awards in both leagues, with multiple teams. But for all of his hard work on the field, Sheffield has also been highly successful off the field.
In 1997, just 10 years after playing with the Ports, Sheffield established the Gary Sheffield Foundation, which provides children with an environment for per-sona, professional and spiritual growth. In 2003, he received the Outstanding Professional Award from the Tampa Sports Club, and he won the Thurman Munson Award in 2004 for his philanthropic efforts.
The Stockton Ports are proud of his efforts both on and off the field, and congratulate Gary for his ac-complishment.

Bark in the ParkBark in the Park Fun For AllMan’s Best Friend Welcome on May 19By Kristin Pratt
For many Ports players, the sight and sound of dogs at the ballpark will be a definite departure for the norm. The Stockton Ports will be welcom-ing dogs to a game, for the first time in stadium history, with their first “Bark in the Park” promo-tion on Tuesday, May 19.
Dogs of all kinds will be able to attend the game, and fans with dogs will be seated in a special section of the ballpark, and will have their own entrance to the game.
Fans that bring dogs to the game must show up-to-date medical information for their pet before their dog is allowed into the ballpark, to help ensure the safety of all animals and people pres-ent at the game.
For dog-owner and Ports right-handed pitcher Scott Hodsdon, seeing and hearing dogs during a game won’t be a new experience.
Hodsdon, who ranked among the Midwest League leaders in ERA and was fourth in the Oakland organization in ERA last season, experienced a similar “Bark in the Park” promotion last summer with Oakland Single-A affiliate Kane County.
“We had a really good turnout for that,” Hodsdon said. “I had fun.”
At Elfstrom Stadium, the home of the Cougars, dogs were able to enjoy the game from the Acres Group Lawn Sections, near the right-field bullpens.
“I was in the bullpen that day,” Hodsdon ex-plained. “We had fans come up and introduce their dogs to us. It was good interaction.”
Hodsdon, who is a starting pitcher this season, might not be meeting the pets of Ports fans in the Stockton bullpen this May, but he has his own canine fan waiting for him at home.
And for Hodsdon, the reaction of his furry fan upon his arrival is one of the great pleasures of owning a pet.
“When you get home there’s always someone excited to see you all the time, who’s always happy and who’s always ready to play,” he said. “It’s a good feeling to have a dog around.”
Hodsdon and his wife are the proud owners of Scruffy, a terrier mix, one-year-old puppy. The Hodsdons rescued Scruffy from a pound in South-ern California in the off-season.
“He’s white and gray, and his name fits him,” Hodsdon said. “He’s scraggly looking, but he’s real cute.”
Hodsdon said the idea to rescue a pet was his wife’s.
“She wanted someone to keep her company and she’s really into trying to help out and save pets,” he said. “She looked through a bunch of pounds for a good dog to take home.”
Growing up, Hodsdon and his wife both had dogs, he said.
“I had a yellow lab for 12 years and she had a little mutt that lived to be around 17,” he added. “Her family rescued that one too.”
Fans who want to rescue a pet, like the Hods-dons did, can learn more about adoption and pet rescue from area representatives at the May 19 game.
But more importantly, fans are encouraged to bring their furry friend to Banner Island Ballpark.
After all, what better way to enjoy a warm May evening in Stockton than with your best friend in Stockton’s Ballpark?

Memorial WeekendPorts Remember on Memorial DayBilly Hebert Field and Banner Island Ball-park recall sacrifice of Americans By Kristin Pratt
Memorial Day is a valued holiday for the Stockton Ports because it gives the organization and fans a chance to salute the service and sacrifice of the men and women from the Stockton are.
“Memorial Day is an important day for us each year because it is a day for us to remember and honor the men and women, not only from Stockton and San Joaquin, but from the nation, who gave their lives so that we could en-joy the great freedoms we enjoy,” said Ports President and General Manager Pat Filippone. “Because baseball is the National Pastime and one of the most American traditions, it’s important for us to recall players like Billy Hebert, and be grateful that their sacrifice helps us to enjoy the game today.”
The Ports are proud of their association with America’s military forces. The team’s current home at Banner Island Ballpark rests on the history and tradition of military ser-vice. Banner Island was where Charles Weber flew the flag to celebrate Union victories during the Civil War, and was the construction site for several ships that served in the Allied forces during World War II.
But the former home of the Ports, a neighborhood dia-mond in Oak Park, stands as an emblem of the city and organization’s commitment to honoring the American heroes who paid the ultimate price for their nation.
Originally called the Oak Park Baseball Field, the field was christened Billy Hebert Field in 1950, in honor of a native son who not only was a terrific athlete, but was also the first professional baseball player to die in World War II.
Billy Hebert was born in Stockton on December 20, 1919, and grew up playing recreational baseball. He was one of the stars on the Karl Ross American Legion squad, and captained the Karl Ross team in 1936.
At the age of 16, Hebert tried out for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, and impressed them enough to join the team in the winter of 1937, playing with Lefty O’Doul, Dom DiMaggio and Ted Norbert. Hebert had a good year, and went on to sign his first professional contract in 1939 with Cincinnati.
For the 1939 season, Hebert played second base with the Ogden Reds in the Pioneer League. In his first game with the organization, he went 4-for-6 with a triple and a grand slam. Hebert ended the season with a .302 batting aver-age with 30 doubles and nine triples.
In 1940, Hebert went to the Oakland Oaks and played through spring training with the Pacific Coast League team. But he was let go before the season began. His next stop in his professional career was with the Merced Bears in the California League in 1941.
Hebert had his best season that year, playing in 130 games and finishing the season with a .328 batting aver-age and a .528 slugging percentage. He collected 31 doubles, 17 triples and 12 home runs that season with the Bears.
Just after the season, Hebert joined up with the U.S. military to help the American efforts in World War II. Hebert worked as a metalsmith for the Navy, serving at the Naval Air Station at Alameda, Calif. and Naval Air Station at Norfolk, Va. before being transferred to the Pacific Theatre.
On July 14, 1942, Aviation Metalsmith Third Class Hebert left the United States for the Solomon Islands, where his job was to keep the U.S. Navy’s aircraft in working order. The Solomon Islands were a key base for the Allies because it was ideally located to maintain shipping be-tween the U.S. and Australia. The Allied forces captured a muddy airstrip from Japanese forces at Guadalcanal to set up their base, naming it Henderson Field. That air station on Guadalcanal became the focus of the early campaigns in the Pacific, and became a target of the Japanese Navy especially, who worked to keep the American planes from taking to the air.
On the night of October 13, 1942, Japanese battleships bombarded Henderson Field, which destroyed a majority of the American aircraft and the field itself. Hebert most likely sustained his fatal injuries in this action.
Hebert died from his wounds on October 21, 1942. An ar-ticle from the November 19, 1942 Sporting News stated: “The Stockton, Cal. lad won’t answer the umpire’s call when it sounds again throughout the land. But his memo-ry will be cherished long in the annals of the game as the first to lay down his life so that both his country and the sport to which he dedicated himself might survive.”
His memory was commemorated at his boyhood baseball grounds on Memorial Day in 1943, when a bronze plaque commemorating Hebert was unveiled at the base of a new flag pole at Oak Park. That plaque was moved to the grandstand area in 1992.
Resolution No. 17,377 by the Stockton City Council on September 18, 1950 made the field’s name change from Oak Park to Billy Hebert Field permanent, and reflected Stockton’s commitment to cherishing Hebert’s memory and sacrifice.
For more than fifty years, Billy Hebert Field was the home of the Stockton Ports. Although the Ports enjoy their new home at Banner Island Ballpark, many more ballplayers, including Hebert’s Karl Ross Legion team, still make their home field in that historic stadium.
The Ports are proud to have been associated with Hebert and honor his sacrifice to this country.
The Stockton Ports will be celebrating Memorial Day on Monday, May 25 during their 6:05 p.m. game against Vis-alia. The Ports players will be sporting stars and stripes caps during the contest, and those game-worn caps will be auctioned off during the game to fans.
