NAU Holds On for 23-21 Victory Over UC Davis

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - No. 25 Northern Arizona (7-3, 5-1 Big Sky) led by as many as 13 points in the first half, as it held on for a 23-21 victory over UC Davis (1-8, 0-5 Big Sky) at the Walkup Skydome in the Lumberjacks’ Hall of Fame Game.

Junior quarterback Jordan Perry finished 23-for-36 in his sec-ond career start. He recorded 208 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns, as he helped NAU stay undefeated at home this season.

The Lumberjacks were able to make their way down the field early on, but they had to settle for field goals, rather than touchdowns. Junior Ryan Hawkins hit back-to-back field goals (37 and 41 yards) to give NAU a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.

NAU stretched its lead to 13-0 after a 52-yard pass from Jor-dan Perry to senior wide receiver Ify Umodu saw the wide re-ceiver glide into the end zone with no defenders in sight. The score was the first touchdown of the game and Umodu’s fourth of the season.

UC Davis interrupted NAU’s scoring spree when Gabe Man-zanares connected with Mark Martindale on a 29-yard touch-down pass with 8:23 remaining in the first half.

NAU was able to score two more times before the end of the half.

Perry found senior tight end Beau Gardner for his second thrown touchdown of the day and a 13-point lead for the Lum-berjacks.

A minute and a half later, junior safety Eddie Horn intercepted Ben Scott’s pass and ran it back 38 yards for his third pick of the season. The interception led to a 33-yard field goal by Hawkins and a 23-7 halftime lead.

The Aggies controlled the ball well in the second half, which led to a pair of touchdown combos between Scott and Ramon Vargas. UC Davis’ final touchdown came with 8:56 left in the game. The Aggies attempted to move the ball up the field on their final drive, but senior cornerback Blake Bailey picked the ball off ending any hopes of an Aggie comeback.

Umodu led NAU with 76 receiving yards, while redshirt fresh-man Corbin Jountti tallied 58 rushing yards and an additional 23 receiving yards. Craig Frum had a team-high eight tackles, including a six-yard sack.

UCD’s Scott finished 18-for-29 with two interceptions, 204 yards and two touchdowns. Vargas added 97 receiving yards, as he scored two of the Aggies’ three touchdowns.

Yes It’s TrueNAU has played 10 true freshmen this season. The only rookie to earn a start so far this season is cornerback Maurice Davison. He started at Montana on Sept. 26 fin-ishing with a season-high eight tackles. Davison also started versus Montana State.

I’ve Made My CaseSenior running back Casey Jahn was named the ROOT SPORTS Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5. The honor is the first of Jahn’s career. Jahn and the Lumberjacks led from start to finish against No. 11 Montana State, coming away with a 49-41 victory at home on family weekend. Jahn set a new career-high when he rushed for 175 yards. He had seven carries and found the end zone twice for his first set of touchdowns this season. Jahn’s first score came with 13 seconds left in the first half as he recorded a one-yard touchdown run. He scored again for the Lumberjacks to start the second half when he rushed six yards into the end zone. Jahn averaged 7.3 yards per carry and had a long of 45 yards in the win. Jahn was also named the College Sports Madness Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week, and the CSM National Offensive Player of the Week.

No But’s About ItEmmanuel Butler was named Co-Big Sky ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week announced on Sept. 7, sharing the honor with EWU’s Cooper Kupp. Butler had a career night from start to finish as NAU defeated No. 24 Stephen F. Austin 34-28 on the road. It took two minutes for Butler to make his first catch of the game and it came in thrilling fashion, as he rolled right past the SFA defense and into the end zone with a 57-yard touchdown catch. Twenty seconds into the second quarter, Butler’s second catch was a 47-yard touchdown, turning his first-two catches into scores. By halftime, Butler had three catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Butler didn’t score in the third, but made up for it in the fourth with a 36-yard touch-down catch from wide receiver Alex Holmes on the switch. Butler finished 30 yards shy of breaking the 36-year old school record for single game receiving yards (245). His 216 yards was a new career high, almost totaling his yards from a year ago. Butler averaged 15 more yards per catch than any other receiver in the league in the opening week and did so with half the amount of catches.

Butler has already eclipsed his total yards from a year ago with 515 yards through four games.

NAU’s biggest win over an SLC opponent was in the 2003 FCS Playoffs when the Lumberjacks defeated No. 1 McNeese State in the first round.

ROOTedNorthern Arizona entered 2015 4-0 all-time when playing on ROOT Sports. The Lumberjacks went 2-0 last season on ROOT with wins on the road at Portland State and at home versus then-No. 2 Eastern Washington. R-E-S-P-E-C-TNAU has received special permission from the NCAA to have two stickers on their helmet this season. The first is a 100-Year seal celebrating the many play-ers and coaches that have come through the Lumberjack program. The second is an “MD49” sticker in honor of Michael DeGroote. Mirich aided the squad to a 20-15-4 overall mark while in Flagstaff, and he was a key cog in a defense that limited oppo-nents to 109.1 yards per game over a six-game span. Mirich was chosen by the Minnesota Vikings in the 16th round of the 1963 NFL Draft and the Oakland Raiders in the 20th round of the 1963 AFL Draft. He played on the defensive line for the Raiders, the Denver Broncos and the Boston Patriots for a total of seven seasons. He was inducted into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Mirich is the second Lumberjack to have his jersey retired by the university. All-American and Walter Payton Award winner Archie Amerson had his jersey retired by NAU in 2014.
