1 INTRODUCTION

This document contains instruction on how to download, format and install updates

from your computer (PC) to your PS3 without the usage of Proxy programs. The author of

this document (DarkKitarist) is not the owner or author of the programs portrayed in this

guide. This guide is completely Open Source and can thus be used for commercial or non-

commercial reasons. Some parts of the tutorial were made on a virtual machine since some

programs don’t work on Windows 8 (IDC).

1.1 Dependencies and required programs

Before we start you have to make sure that you have all the required dependencies. The

required dependencies are:

.Net Framework 4.0 full

Visual Basic Run-Time 5.0

The above mentioned dependencies are within the .rar of the IDC archive that I have

uploaded to Dropbox.

The programs we will be using are:

IDC – Install Disk Creator

PS3 – Game Update Downloader

ILO – ISO Library Organizer

1.2 Other requirements

I really suggest that you use Windows 7 since Windows 8 has problems with permissions

and will not allow IDC to work properly. I could work on Windows 8 but I could not get it

to work but that could be because I have many programing environments that could

interfere with VB runtime or .Net Framework…

2 UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS

2.1 Getting game information

Before we download the updates to the computer we have to first know what games we

have. This can be done by reading the PS3_GAMES folder with the awesome ILO

program. This can also be done by looking into the param.sfo. I don’t recommend reading

only the name of the folder where you have your JB rip since that can be wrong… I

recommend using the ILO since it gives you a nice list of games that are used by the Cobra

ODE.

2.1.1 Using ILO – ISO Library Organizer

All you have to do is copy your ILO.exe to the ROOT of your HDD where you have your

COBRA and PS3_GAMES folder. Then you just double click on the ILO.exe and wait for

the list to refresh. Then just read the “Code” part of the list with the game

ID(BLES00948…).

2.1.2 Using param.sfo

Go to your selected JB rip <GameID>\PS3_GAME\ and open PARAM.SFO. Then just

read the game ID from the “Title ID” section.

2.2 Downloading the updates

Now that we have the name (or names) of our games we continue to downloading the

game updates. We can do this one game at a time or many games at a time. If we do this

one game at a time we need the game ID from the previous chapter. But if we batch

download we just point the program to the folder where we keep our JB rips.

2.2.1 Downloading one update at a time

We start the PS3GameUpdater.exe program (doesn’t matter where) and go into the

“Import From” menu and select “Search Game ID”. Then just input your selected game ID

and you should get something like this shown on the figure below. Not that you have to

click on the + so that all the updates will be show.

Figure 2.3: Updates for a single game (GTA V).

Then you just click on the “Check updates for selected games” button and the updates

should download into a new folder made in the same folder as you started the program.

The downloaded updates should look like on the figure below:

Figure 2.4: Downloaded game updates.

Page 11: Game Updates Offline

6

2.2.2 Batch game update download

If you want to download many game updates at a time you just have to show the game

update program where you store your JB rips. You have to show the program your game

folder by pressing the “…” button and then the “Get Game List” button. The game list

should update in a few seconds (maybe a few minutes if you have a lot of “backups”). Now

you can select or deselect the game of which you do not want or need an update.

2.3 Making an Install Disc

Now that we have our updates we only have to make an Install Disc that will house our

updates. With the IDC program we can make an ISO with 6 updates within it.

2.3.1 Configuring a single update package in IDC

First we start our program and make sure that everything is working correctly. When

you start the program it will make a new folder inside the folder you started the IDC.exe

program. The folder must be named “content” and within it there must be a second folder

names “IDC” that houses the dummy rip that will be used to make a valid ISO. Also within

the “content” folder there must be a genps3iso.exe program and param_sfo_editor.exe. If

some of this programs or folders are missing then you are most probably using Windows 8

or haven’t started the program as an ADMINISTRATOR.

When you start the program you must double click on the file location text box (Figure 2.6

red square). You can clear the location by pressing the adjacent “X” button.

Figure 2.6: The IDC program.

v

8

Now we select a game update package as shown on the figure below and press “Open”.

Figure 2.7: Package selection.

After the selection of the game package we add a picture to the package, this is not a

mandatory step but helps when within the Cobra ODE manager. We can change the picture

of the package by double clicking on the IDC picture (Figure 2.6 green square). Then you

just select a picture of the game and press “Open”.

Figure 2.8: Picture selection for the update package.

Page 14: Game Updates Offline

9

After selecting a picture all you now have to do is rename the title of the game with the

param.sfo editor within the IDC program. You do this by pressing the “Edit title” button

above the package picture (Figure 2.6 blue square). This will open the param.sfo where

you can change the title (which is by default PKGX the X represents the number of the

package) as I did on the picture below.

Figure 2.9: Renaming of the game package Title.

Page 15: Game Updates Offline

10

After this the program should look like the picture below with one game package inserted,

its picture added and title renamed. On figure 2.11 you can see the IDC program with all 6

packages filled. The instructions for adding additional packages are the same as adding one

package.

Figure 2.10: IDC program with one game package.

Figure 2.11: IDC program with 6 game packages.

Page 16: Game Updates Offline

Offline Update Installation

11

Then all you have to do is press “Build ISO” (Figure 2.6 yellow circle) and wait for the

program to extract the PKG and copy them into the before mentioned IDC folder that

houses the dummy JB rip that will be used to make an ISO. The copy process will need

anything from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on how big the updates are. After

the copy process the program will ask you if you want to “Build 3K3Y ISO” or “Build

Cobra ISO”.

Figure 2.12: Selection of ISO type.

After selecting the ISO type the isops3gen.exe is started and makes an IDC.ISO that

contains all the updates.

Figure 2.13: isops3gen.exe within IDC.

Page 17: Game Updates Offline

Offline Update Installation

12

After the isops3gen.exe completes the IDC program will show a “Done!” message (Figure

2.14).

Figure 2.14: “Done!” Message.

If the process was successful there should be an ISO within the folder you started the

IDC.exe program (Figure 2.14).

Figure 2.15: IDC ISO within the IDC folder.

2.3.2 Rebuilding the Cobra ODE browser

After making the Install Disc ISO copy the ISO into the PS3_GAMES folder on your

HDD, rebuilding with genps3extra is not needed if you are using MCU 2.0. If you are

using 1.9 and below you have to use genps3extra to rebuild the browser.

If you’re using Cobra ODE manager instead of the browser then you don’t need to do

anything else but to copy the ISO into the PS3_GAMES folder.

2.4 Installing the update

Connect your HDD as you normally would and go into the Cobra ODE browser/manager,

and select the “Install Disc” (Figure 2.16). After that select an update (Figure 2.17).

14

After that the installation of the package starts.

Figure 2.18: Installation process.

If the process is successful a message will be displayed like on the figure below.

After all is complete you should check if the update has been added or updated in the

“Game Data Utility” (Figure2.20).
