BonanzaCard Game

1. OBJECTIVE The objective of the game is for players to form Positive Whole Numbers (PWN) with the cards given them.

2. CONTENTS A pack of BONANZA contains 63 cards and game rules. Items needed but not supplied are: calculator, pen/pencil and paper.

3. MAKE-UP OF CARDS The 63 cards are made-up of 58 cards with a number and arithmetic symbol (operator) on them and 5 cards with only a number on them. The cards with a number and arithmetic symbol (operator) on them consist of:

a. 18 cards with a number and the plus (+) symbol (operator);b. 18 cards with a number and the minus (-) symbol (operator);c. 11 cards with a number and the divide (÷) symbol (operator); andd. 11 cards with a number and the multiplication (x) symbol (operator).

The 5 cards with a number and no symbol on them are numbered: 2 - 6.

4. NUMBER OF PLAYERS 2 – 5 PLAYERS; ages 12 and above.

5. DETERMINATION OF PLAYER ‘A’

a. All 63 cards are shuffled thoroughly by any player;b. After ‘a’ above, each player picks one card each from the top.c. After ‘b’ above, the player with the highest number card picked becomes Player ‘A’. If more than one player picked the highest number card, the process is repeated till Player ‘A’ emerges. The player to the left of Player ‘A’ becomes Player ‘B’; The player to the left of Player ‘B’ becomes Player ‘C’ etc.

6. RULES*

GAME TYPES There are three (3) Game Types for BONANZA:

1. BONANZA FUNKY; 2. BONANZA STRICT; and3. BONANZA CLASSIC.

* Other Game Type variations can be found on the “BONANZA COMMUNITY” pages on: www.daffodilsgp.com/bonanza

A. BONANZA FUNKY

The following rules apply to BONANZA FUNKY only:1. All 63 cards must be thoroughly shuffled by any player.2. The player who shuffles the cards must distribute 8 cards (one card – at – a –time) to each player

(including him/herself, if he/she is a player). When distributing the cards to players, the side the number and symbol are must face down.

3. In the process of forming their Positive Whole Numbers (no matter the Type of Game being played), players must always ignore the arithmetic symbol (operator) on the first card they use or put down. In short, with the first card, only the number on the card should be taken into consideration.

4. Where a card in a player’s possession has no arithmetic symbol (operator) on it, the player who has it determines the symbol.

B. BONANZA STRICT

The following rules apply to BONANZA STRICT only:1. The 5 cards with no arithmetic symbol (operator) on them are separated from the 58 cards with an

arithmetic symbol (operator) on them (Note: the 5 cards with no arithmetic symbol (operator) on them have yellow coloured bars to the side of it). The 5 cards are shuffled and placed side-by-side face down on the surface the game is to be played on (ie: the side the numbers are should face down). The 5 cards that are placed faced down are called: ‘FIRST CARDS’.

2. After ‘B1’ above the 58 cards with numbers and arithmetic symbol (operator) on them are thoroughly shuffled. The player who shuffles the cards must distribute 7 cards (one card – at – a –time) to each player (including him/herself, if he/she is a player). When distributing the cards to players, the side the number and symbol are must face down.

3. After ‘2’ above, each player picks one (1) FIRST CARD. Player ‘A’ picks first, followed by player ‘B’ and so on. Players can pick any card. Players add the FIRST CARD picked to the seven (7) already in their possession, bringing the total number of cards in a player’s possession to eight (8).

4. In the process of forming their Positive Whole Numbers (no matter the Type of Game being played), players must always begin their math sentence with the FISRT CARD in their possession. In short, when playing BONANZA STRICT the first card put down by a player, or the first card to start a math sentence should always be a card without an arithmetic symbol on it (ie.: a card with a yellow coloured bar).

C. BONANZA CLASSIC

The following rules apply to BONANZA CLASSIC only: 1. Each player has his/her own deck of Bonanza Game Cards. 2. One player shuffles thoroughly one deck of cards. The player distributes as per 4 ‘a’ or ‘b’ below the

number of cards needed to him/herself only. 3. All players distribute same cards (from their deck of card) to themselves. For example: the player

who shuffled the cards as in C ’2’ above distributed the following cards to himself: 5, +8, +11, -11, /7, x8, +10, -2. All other players must distribute (from their deck of cards) cards with the same arithmetic operator/symbol and number to themselves.

In short, in BONANZA CLASSIC, all players have the same hand (ie: same cards).4. BONANZA CLASSIC can either be played using rules governing BONANZA FUNKY or BONANZA

STRICT. a. BONANZA CLASSIC – FUNKY: Each player has the same hand (same cards) eight in total. In the

process of forming their Positive Whole Numbers rules governing BONANZA FUNKY above applies.

b. BONANZA CLASSIC – STRICT: Each player has the same hand (same cards) seven in total. In the process of forming their Positive Whole Numbers rules governing BONANZA STRICT above applies.

C. GENERAL RULES.

Whether playing BONANZA FUNKY or BONANZA STRICT, the following general rules apply:

1. Players must find a flat surface to play the game on.2. There are five (5) Rounds in a game. At the end of each Round the scores are recorded. At the end of

the fifth Round, all the scores per player are totaled; and a winner is declared based on the Game Type being played and the Winner Rules being used.

3. No matter what Game Type is being played, players must use all 8 cards in their possession to form a Positive Whole Number.

4. A player forfeits his/her turn when he/she is unable to, or the cards in his/her possession do not allow him/her to form a Positive Whole Number.

5. There are two WINNER RULES; and they are SUNRISE and SUNSET. Players must decide which Winner Rule they are playing before they start the game. With:

a. SUNRISE: The player with the highest Positive Whole Number is the winner for the Round being played. After all five (5) Rounds have been played, the player with the highest totaled Positive Whole Number is the overall winner.

When playing Sunrise, the score recorded for a player who forfeits (see ‘C4’ above) during a Round of play is: Zero (0) points.

b. SUNSET: The player with the lowest Positive Whole Number is the winner for the Round being played. After all five (5) Rounds have been played, the player with the lowest totaled Positive Whole Number is the overall winner.

When playing Sunset, the score recorded for a player who forfeits (see‘C4’ above), during a Round of play is: the score of the player with the highest Positive Whole Number for the Round of play plus ten (10). For example: four players (Players ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’). Player ‘As’ score for the Round is ‘5’; Player ‘Bs’ score is ‘7’; Player ‘Cs’ score is ‘9’; Player ‘D’ forfeits. Since Player ‘Cs’ score of ‘9’ is the highest Positive Whole Number for the Round, Player ‘D’ must add ten (10) points to the score of Player ‘C’. Player ‘Ds’ score for forfeiting the Round of play is then ‘19’.

6. When playing STRAIGHT-SET, players have five (5) minutes maximum to lay their arranged cards on the flat surface for all to see.

7. Players are allowed to use the calculator. However, players must decide before the game starts what calculating format to use: whether Simple Math or BODMAS. The game suggests Simple Math.

7. PREPARING TO START a. First, Players must decide what Game Type (whether Bonanza Funky or Bonanza Strict) they are

playing; and what Winner Rule (whether Sunrise or Sunset) they are using. Players must also decide whether they are using Simple Math or BODMAS when calculating.

8. PLAYING THE GAME PLAY MODE a. There are two (2) Play Modes no matter the Game Type being played or Winner Rule being used. The two Play Modes are: 1. TURN-PLAY; and 2. STRAIGHT-SET

1. TURN-PLAY: With Turn-Play, players take turns and place cards they have been dealt on the flat surface one player after the other. Therefore, with TURN-PLAY, players see each other’s cards as they are being laid on the flat surface. Players must lay their cards in a format that will enable them win the Round. After each player has finished placing their cards, the arranged cards are calculated, and a winner is declared as per Game Type being played and Winner Rule being used.

2. STRAIGHT-SET: With Straight-Set, players simultaneously place all 8 cards in their possession on the table or flat surface at a-go. This is done only, after they have first arranged the cards in their hands (or out of view of other players) in a format that will make them win the Round. As per GENERAL RULES (6) above, players have five (5) minutes to do this. After the arranged cards are put on the flat surface, each player’s cards are calculated, and a winner is declared as per Game Type being played and Winner Rule being used.

EXAMPLES

EXAMPLE 1 GAME TYPE: BONANZA FUNKY WINNER RULE: SUNRISE PLAY MODE: TURN PLAY Two players are playing Bonanza Funky: Player ‘A’ and Player ‘B’. The Winner Rule being used is: Sunrise; and the calculating format is Simple Math. Player ‘A’ shuffles the cards thoroughly and distributes the required 8 cards (one card – at – a- time) to Player ‘B’.

Player ‘As’ cards are as follows: ÷3, -17, x3, +11, -14, ÷2, +6, and 3. Player ‘Bs’ cards are as follows: -7, x5, ÷5, -1, x 6, +14, +18, and +7.

The Play Mode is Turn Play. The first card Player ‘A’ puts down on the flat surface is -17. Since this is the first card RULE ‘6A (3)’ above applies; therefore the arithmetic operator/symbol on the card must be ignored. The first card is no longer ‘-17’, but ‘17’. It is now Player ‘Bs’ turn to play. Player ‘B’ puts down ÷5 card. Also because this is Player ‘Bs’ first card, RULE 6A (3) above applies: the arithmetic operator/symbol on the card must be ignored. The first card now becomes: ‘5’. After that it is Player ‘As’ turn to put down the next card. She puts down -14 card. The math sentence for Player ‘A’ is now ’17 – 14’ (which equals 3). It’s Player ‘Bs’ turn to play and he puts down -1 card. The math sentence for Player ‘B’ is now ‘5 – 1’ (which equals 4). The above procedure continues (one player after the other) till all 8 cards of each player are placed down.

After all 8 cards have been placed down, Player ‘A’ had laid out the following math sentence: -17 – 14 ÷ 3 + 11 ÷ 2 + 6 x 3 and 3 (because the last card had no symbol on it RULE 6A (4) above applies; and Player ‘A’ gives the last card the arithmetic operator/symbol ‘x’). Player ‘As’ math sentence now reads as follows: 17 – 14 ÷ 3 + 11 ÷ 2 + 6 x 3 x 3 (which equals 108). Player ‘As’ score for this Round is therefore ‘108’.

After all 8 cards have been placed down, Player ‘B’ had laid out the following math sentence: ÷5 – 1 + 7 – 7 + 14 + 18 x 6 x 5, which reads: 5 – 1 + 7 – 7 + 14 + 18 x 6 x 5 (which equals 1,080). Player ‘Bs’ score for this Round is therefore ‘1,080’.

After the end of this Round, four other Rounds are played. After the fifth Round, the scores for each Round are added-up (totaled); the Player with the highest totaled Positive Whole Number score is the winner.

EXAMPLE 2 GAME TYPE: BONANZA FUNKY WINNER RULE: SUNSET PLAY MODE: STRAIGHT-SET

Two players are playing BONANZA FUNKY: Player ‘A’ and Player ‘B’. The Winner Rule being used is: Sunset; and the calculating format is Simple Math. Player ‘A’ shuffles the cards thoroughly and distributes the required 8 cards (one card – at – a- time) to each player.

Player ‘As’ cards are as follows: ÷3, -18, ÷5, +17, -14, +1, +6, and 5. Player ‘Bs’ cards are as follows: ÷10 -17 -7 x 5 -1 x 3 + 11 and 3

As the Play Mode is Straight-Set, players have 5 minutes to arrange their cards either in their hands or out of view of other players. When the 5 minutes are up, each player arranges his/her 8 cards on the flat surface (at the same time) and in a manner that will let them win as per the Winner Rule being used.

At the end of the 5 minutes Player ‘A’ laid out the following math sentence: -18 – 14 + 17 ÷ 3 5 ÷ 5 + 6 and + 1, because the fifth card laid (i.e. card with number ‘5’ on it) had no symbol on it RULE 6 A (4) above applies; and Player ‘A’ gives that card the arithmetic operator/symbol ‘x’. Also since ‘- 18’ is the first card,

4

BonanzaCard Game

RULE 6 A (3) above applies. Therefore, the arithmetic operator/symbol on the card must be ignored. The first card is no longer ‘-18’, but ‘18’. Player ‘As’ math sentence is therefore read as follows: 18 – 14 + 17 ÷3 x 5 ÷5 +6 +1 (which equals 14). Player ‘As’ score for this Round is therefore ‘14’.

At the end of the 5 minutes Player ‘B’ laid out the following math sentence: -7 -1 x 5 x 3 ÷ 10 + 11 3 - 17 (because the seventh card laid (i.e. card with number ‘3’ on it) had no symbol on it RULE 6 A (4) applies; and Player ‘B’ gives that card the arithmetic operator/symbol ‘-’). Also since ‘- 7’ is the first card, RULE 6A (3) above applies. Therefore, the arithmetic operator/symbol on the card must be ignored. The first card is no longer ‘-7’, but ‘7’. Player ‘Bs’ math sentence is therefore read as follows: 7 – 1 x 5 x 3 ÷ 10 + 11 - 3 - 17 (which equals 0). Player ‘Bs’ score for this Round is therefore ‘0’.

After the end of this Round, four other Rounds are played. After the fifth Round, the scores for each Round are added-up (totaled); the Player with the lowest Positive Whole Number score is the winner.

EXAMPLE 3 GAME TYPE: BONANZA STRICT WINNER RULE: SUNRISE PLAY MODE: TURN PLAY Two players are playing Bonanza Strict: Player ‘A’ and Player ‘B’. The Winner Rule being used is: Sunrise; and the calculating format is Simple Math. Player ‘A’ separates the five (5) cards with no arithmetic symbol on them (ie the cards with the yellow colour bars to the side) from the pack of cards. She shuffles them and places them face down (the side the number is written on is facing down). As per RULES (B1) above, the five (5) cards are called FIRST CARDS. Afterwards Player ‘A’ shuffles the rest of the cards thoroughly and distributes the required seven (7) cards (one card – at – a- time) to herself and Player ‘B’. After the distribution of the seven (7) cards, each player (beginning with Player ‘A’) picks one (1) First Card each and adds it to his/her seven (7) cards

Player ‘As’ cards are as follows: ÷3, -17, x3, +11, -14, ÷2, +6, and 3. Player ‘Bs’ cards are as follows: -7, x5, ÷5, -1, ÷2, +14, +18, and 6

The Play Mode is Turn Play. Because the type of BONANZA being played is Bonanza Strict, Rule ‘6 (B4)’ above applies. The first card Player ‘A’ must put down on the flat surface is 3. It is now Player ‘Bs’ turn to play. Again Rule ‘6 (B4)’ above applies; and the first card Player ‘B’ puts down is ‘6’. After that it is Player ‘As’ turn to put down the next card. She puts down ÷3 card. The math sentence for Player ‘A’ is now ’3 ÷ 3’ (which equals 1). It’s Player ‘Bs’ turn to play and he puts down ÷2 card. The math sentence for Player ‘B’ is now ‘6 ÷2’ (which equals 3). The above procedure continues (one player after the other) till all 8 cards of each player are used.

After all 8 cards have been placed down, Player ‘A’ had laid out the following math sentence: 3 ÷ 3 – 17 ÷ 2 + 11 + 6 x 3 - 14 (which equals 13). Player ‘As’ score for this Round is therefore ‘13’.

After all 8 cards have been placed down, Player ‘B’ had laid out the following math sentence: 6 ÷ 2 -1 - 7 ÷ 5 + 14 + 18 x 5, (which equals 155). Player ‘Bs’ score for this Round is therefore ‘155’.

After the end of this Round, four other Rounds are played. After the fifth Round, the scores for each Round are added-up (totaled); the Player with the highest totaled Positive Whole Number score is the winner.

EXAMPLE 4 GAME TYPE: BONANZA STRICT WINNER RULE: SUNSET PLAY MODE: STRAIGHT-SET

Two players are playing Bonanza Strict: Player ‘A’ and Player ‘B’. The Winner Rule being used is: Sunset; the calculating format is Simple Math. Player ‘A’ separates the five (5) cards with no arithmetic symbol on them (i.e. the cards with the yellow color bars to the side) from the pack of cards. She shuffles them and places them face down (the side the number is written on facing down). As per RULES (B1) above, the five (5) cards are called FIRST CARDS. Afterwards Player ‘A’ shuffles the rest of the cards thoroughly and distributes the required seven (7) cards (one card – at – a- time) to herself and Player ‘B’. After the distribution of the seven (7) cards, each player (beginning with Player ‘A’) picks one (1) First Card each and adds it to his/her seven (7) cards.

Player ‘As’ cards are as follows: ÷3, -18, x3, ÷5, +17, -14, +6, and 3. Player ‘Bs’ cards are as follows: ÷10, -17, -7, x 5, -6, x 3, + 11, and 5

As the play mode is Straight- Set, players have 5 minutes to arrange their cards either in their hands or out of view of other players. When the 5 minutes are up, each player arranges his/her 8 cards on the flat surface (at the same time) and in a manner that will let them win as per the Winner Rule being used.

At the end of the 5 minutes Player ‘A’ laid out the following math sentence: 3 – 18 ÷ 5 - 14 + 17÷ 3 x 3 + 6 (which equals 6). Player ‘As’ score for this Round is therefore ‘6’.

At the end of the 5 minutes Player ‘B’ laid out the following math sentence: 5 x 5 - 7 – 17 + 11 x 3 - 6 ÷ 10 (which equals 3). Player ‘Bs’ score for this Round is therefore ‘3’.

After the end of this Round, four other Rounds are played. After the fifth Round, the scores for each Round are added-up (totaled); the Player with the lowest Positive Whole Number score is the winner.
