May Folks took advantage of the beautiful weather last week to get lots of things done around Potter County. On Wednesday, May 4, the weather was so calm that the flags at the court house lawn hung straight down, and it was a chance for Andrew West- phal of RDP Construction to take advantage of the calm morning and do one last sweep of the space where the new Civil War monu- ment will be located. Father Jerry Kopel, priest at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg, blessed the new CT scanner at the Avera Gettysburg Hospital on Monday, May 9. An open house was held at the hos- pital for the public to learn more about the cutting-edge 64-slice scanner that serves as a fast diagnostic tool for the patients in the area. After a rain delay on Monday, a resurfacing project on US 212 got underway on May 10. The South Dakota Department of Transportation reports that the road from Gettysburg east to Lebanon in Potter County will be under construction, milling the top two inches of the surface and then reworking the material in place to use as a base for the asphalt surfacing. The overall completion date for the project is Oct. 28. When the call comes in for the Gettysburg ambulance crew, there are now six new emer- gency medical technicians, bet- ter known by the initials EMTs, ready to respond. Michael Fis- cher, Amanda Hepper, Lynell Jessen, Tember Johnson, Rachel Wager, and Haley Logan all successfully completed the 180 hours of EMT training which allows them to serve in one of the most important roles in the community. As part of the annual Arbor Day presentation made through the Potter County Conservation District, students in Mrs. Jamie Cronin’s fourth grade class were each given a tree and a lesson in why trees are important. The county conservation district, in conjunction with the South Da- kota Department of Agriculture, visited with students at Gettys- burg Elementary on Wednesday, May 4. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics South Dakota stopped by the Get- tysburg Elementary School on Tuesday to carry the flame of hope across the state with a final destination of the Special Olympics State Summer Games in Spearfish May 19-21. The event was coordinated locally by Julie Williams, who serves on the board for Special Olympics South Dakota. Duane Soper of Gettysburg won the runner up in the Trophy Shootout race on May 7 at the Oahe Speedway north of Pierre. Soper raced his 1972 Ford Pinto. This is the 12th season for the Oahe Speedway, which has the only quarter mile track sanc- tioned by the NHRA.
