1Eleven of Radford’s 23 home runs have came as the first run of the game.11

Of Radford’s 209 hits in Big South games, only 52 have came with runners in scoring position. 52

LAST MEETING (April 28, 2012) ▪ The two teams split a double-dip with the Blue

Hose taking game one 5-3 and the Highlanders earning a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.

▪ Presbyterian was led by a monstrous perfor-mance at the plate by Brad Zebedis, finishing the doubleheader 6 for 9 with eight RBIs. The nightcap saw Zebedis go off for three home runs in a 4 for 4 showing.

▪ Radford was led by a 4 for 8 effort from Brett Mollenhauer in the two games, including a 3 for 4 showing with three RBIs in a game two victory.

▪ In game one, Presbyterian ended Tyler Costel-lo’s consecutive win streak of seven straight, handing the redshirt freshman his first collegiate loss. Costello allowed four earned runs on nine hits while striking out four in six innings of work.

▪ Trailing the Blue Hose the whole game, Radford scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth in a 9-8 walk-off win to salvage the doubleheader.

▪ The ninth saw Matt Mack and Cory Turner lead the inning off with back-to-back singles. Blake Sipe doubled to bring home Mack with one out. After the Blue Hose intentionally walked Patrick Marshall to load the bases for a force out, Mollenhauer tied the game with a sacrifice fly. On the next play, Zach Costello drove home the winning run with a double to the wall in left center, sending the Highlanders to their second walk-off win of the season.

SCOUTING THE BLUE HOSE ▪ Presbyterian fell 5-3 at the hands of Brad

Haymes and Gardner-Webb. Haymes tossed his second complete game against the Blue Hose this season.

▪ The Blue Hose jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on sacrifice flies from the bats of Westson Jackson and A.J. Priaulx. The lead was short lived as the Runnin’ Bulldogs scored four straight. Priaulx cut the lead in half on a solo

home run in the seventh, but the Blue Hose were unable to push across anymore in the loss.

▪ Presbyterian will be playing only their second Big South Tournament game in school history, since it became eligible for the tournament in 2013.

▪ Tyler Weyenberg leads the team with a .357 average and 81 hits. The 81 hits rank second in the league.

▪ Earning Big South Second Team honors, Jackson has posted a .338 average with 72 hits, 55 RBIs, 26 doubles and 10 home runs.

▪ The 26 doubles rank second in the league and second nationally.

▪ Presbyterian has been a doubles machine this season, tallying 110 two-baggers, including four players with double-digit keystone hits.

▪ Tanner Chock found major success in Big South contests this season as the righty posted a 3-0 record and 2.61 ERA in eight starts, including a complete game two-hit shutout. The shutout came on March 25 at Gardner-Webb, Chock complied seven punch outs in the 3-0 win.

▪ In eight Big South starts, Chock held opposing batters to a .198 average, allowing only nine extra base hits in 51.2 innings pitched.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS ▪ Radford and Coastal Carolina gave fans their

money’s worth in the third game of the Big South Tournament on Tuesday. The Highlanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead through six and half innings. Coastal Carolina regained the lead twice as the Highlanders would not go down without a fight in the 7-5 loss in the rematch of the 2015 champi-onship game.

▪ Radford falls to 4-4 in two-run games this season. ▪ Colby Higgerson led the Highlanders with a 2 for

4 effort with two RBIs and a run scored. Higger-son gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run single.

▪ The two-hit effort was the 12th on the season and

his sixth two-RBI performance. ▪ Nygeal Andrews and Danny Hrbek joined Hig-

gerson with a two-hit effort of their own. Andrews collected his seventh two-hit performance of the season and Hrbek picked up his 15th.

▪ The Highlanders out hit the Chanticleers 10-8, marking the 17th time Coastal Carolina has been outhit by the opponent this season.

▪ RU pitchers walked nine batters, including seven in the final three innings. The nine walks match a season-high set on February 19 at Mercer.

▪ In three neutral site games this season, Hrbek leads the Highlanders with a 5 for 12 effort with a double and three runs scored.

2016 HIGHLANDER BASEBALL....................................................................................................................................................................

Joe Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, returned to his roots on July 10, 2007 when he was named the fifth head coach in Radford baseball history. Entering his ninth season as the head man for the Highlanders, a Radford uniform has been a winning fit for Raccuia. Throughout his 12 seasons in a Highlander uniform, Raccuia has been apart of 323 total wins as a player (1994-95), assistant coach (1996) and head coach (2008-present), better than 47 percent of the program’s all-time victories dating back to 1985. Raccuia’s most successful season in a Rad-ford uniform came during an historic 2015 season as the Highlanders finished with a 45-16 record, setting a new school record in wins. The season also saw the programs first Big South regular sea-son and conference championships, while earning a trip the NCAA Nashville Regional. In the regional, RU went 2-2, including wins over No. 3 Indiana and No. 4 Lipscomb. RU finished Big South play with a 20-4 record, earning Raccuia the Big South Coach of the Year award. Raccuia becomes only the third RU head coach to earn the honor. Including a record six all-conference selections in 2015, 32 of Raccuia’s players have earned all-conference honors. The 2015 squad posted a .289/.386/.425 line, while leading the Big South with 122 doubles and 362 RBI. The Highlander bats were led by Big South first-teamers Josh Gardiner and Patrick Marshall. Gardiner narrowly missed the Big South batting title, finishing second with a .368 average, while leading the league with a .451 on-base percentage. Marshall led the conference and set a new RU single-season record with 59 RBI. Big South second team member Hunter Higgerson finished with 25 doubles, leading the Big South and setting a new RU season record. Higgerson finished second behind Marshall in RBI, driving in 53 runs. Shane Johnsonbaugh earned Big South second team honors after leading RU in hits (76), runs scored (50) and walks (38). Radford can attest their 2015 success to their pitching staff and bullpen. The Highlanders finished with a 3.95 ERA, a new single-season record. RU

ranked second in the Big South, holding opposing batters to a .255 average. The Highlanders only allowed 276 runs, their lowest since the 2000 season. Big South First Team member, Ryan Meisinger was named a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award after leading the NCAA in saves with 17. Meisinger finished his career with a 2.60 ERA, a new RU career mark. Michael Boyle earned Big South First Team honors after leading the Big South in wins (10) and finishing second in innings pitched (105.1). With the 10 wins, Boyle became the first Highlander to lead the league in wins, while setting a new RU single-season record. The 2015 senior class concluded their careers with a 137-93-1 overall record, the most wins for a four-year class in program history. The group led RU to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons. Getting players to the professional ranks has been a staple for Raccuia during his time as the headman at RU. Raccuia has oversaw 10 players drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft, with two players signing non-drafted free agent contracts. In 2012, Eddie Butler was the 46th overall selection of the Colorado Rockies in the draft - the highest draft selection in Radford University program history and the first Big South Conference player to be selected in the draft’s first round. On

June 6, 2014, Butler became the third Radford player to make it to the big leagues with his MLB debut for the Colorado Rockies. Raccuia’s success has come both on and off the field of play, including facilities, player develop-ment, recruiting and academics. On his watch, two major baseball facilities have opened: the on-campus hitting facility and RU Baseball Stadium. The stadium, which opened on April 8, 2011, became the cornerstone of Radford’s program thanks in part to Raccuia’s extensive fund-raising and planning efforts. The project went from conception in the Fall of 2010, to completion during the 2011 season as a result of his work. Raccuia also spearheaded the work done to the playing surface and dugouts in time for the 2010 season. All of the improvements to the facilities marked the first major capital upgrades since Raccuia’s playing days at RU. On the academic side, the program has earned several honors under Raccuia. The 2008 season saw Alex Gregory collect the second Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in program history. During the Raccuia reign, RU has placed six players on the Big South All-Academic Team and two on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
