April 7, 2013 (WEEK 6, MLS Game #50) 4 p.m. CT (ESPN2/Deportes; TSN2) The Chicago Fire return to action looking to get their season untracked when they face the New York Red Bulls before an ESPN2 audience Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park. CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire return to action still looking for a first victory of the season, their last match a 4-1 loss to Chivas USA at Toyota Park on March 24. The Fire are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 1 point from 4 matches. LAST MATCH

Chivas USA opened the scoring for the first time this season in the 57th minute when Edgar Mejía collected a perfect layoff from Juan Agudelo outside the box and drilled a rocket past Fire goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi.

Patrick Nyarko leveled the score seven minutes later, Chicago’s first goal of the season, when Sherjill MacDonald found him wide open on right side of the box following a tic-tac-toe move at the top of the box, and he calmly slotted home the equalizer.

But the visitors retook the lead in the 73rd minute. A quick Chivas counter led to a free kick 25 yards out, and Mejía found Joaquín Velázquez on the back post for a header that sailed over Tornaghi and into the side netting.

Two minutes later, Jorge Villafaña picked out Agudelo on the break and he curled a shot off the inside of the far post and into the goal. The Fire's fate was sealed in the 89th minute when Jalil Anibaba knocked the ball into his own net off a cross from José Correa.

Fire head coach Frank Klopas made three changes to the team that reached a scoreless draw with Sporting Kansas City. Paolo Tornaghi came in between the posts for Sean Johnson, Wells Thompson started at right back in place of Michael Videira, and Alex came into the midfield for Dilly Duka.

CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Paolo Tornaghi - Wells Thompson, Austin Berry, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares - Jeff Larentowicz, Daniel Paladini (Maicon Santos 62) - Patrick Nyarko, Alex (Yazid Atouba Emane 86), Chris Rolfe - Sherjill MacDonald (Quincy Amarikwa 68).

TEAM NEWS The four-game start without a victory is now the worst start in Fire team history. They had started a number of

seasons with three games without a win.

“Right now we do not seem to be getting a break. We are making some mistakes that are hurting us,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “You look at the guys, the game, the stats, everything you can say it’s not fair but it is what it is. When you don’t put the chances away, and we made some mistakes that hurt us, that’s it. You have a team; the injuries are part of it. You deal with it. The other guys have to step in and contribute.”

The Fire were beaten for four goals for a second time this season, both coming to the Home Depot Center clubs (losing 4-0 to the LA Galaxy on March 3 in the season opener).

"It’s embarrassing what happened today,” left back Gonzalo Segares said. "I’ve got no words to explain how things were so bad. We had a pretty strong first half. When you don't put away goals and when you give away easy ones, it's a bad recipe."

Patrick Nyarko’s goal vs. Chivas USA was the Fire’s first goal of the season, ending a 334-minute goalless drought to start the year, the third-longest streak in MLS history.

“We created a fair amount of chances and couldn’t finish them. It put the pressure on us to have to push the game more because we didn’t want to lose at home,” said Nyarko. “We can all look at ourselves and admit that these were pretty bad goals we conceded. The best thing is that we know we can only go up from here. All of the players know what we did wrong and it’s easily correctable.”

Even after the bye week, Nyarko is still tied for fouls suffered with 16 on the season, now level with FC Dallas midfielder David Ferreira.

“It's getting pretty bad,” Nyarko said. “It's getting frustrating, just knowing that when I beat guys, here it comes. The mentality is that I'm going to get fouled. Instead of making the next play, that's what I'm thinking about.” Said midfielder Jeff Larentowicz: “They want to get as close to possible to him and not let him turn. Pat is a tricky player, though. He's found ways to wiggle out and get in behind guys. But I think you can see as that ball comes into him, guys are tight on him, and they are chopping at him. That's what you do with a good player.”

There could be help on the defensive end this week as both Logan Pause (quadriceps) and Arne Friedrich (hamstring) have returned and could be available for selection this weekend. “Logan and Arne are in training,” said Klopas. “That’s a good sign there are no setbacks. We’ll just see how they do this week.”

Joel Lindpere will face a former club for the first time in his professional career when the Red Bulls come calling. Lindpere spent the last three seasons with New York. He missed the Chivas match while on World Cup qualifying duty with Estonia, where he came on as a substitute in its two matches. “This is a new feeling for me,” Lindpere said. “It’s excitement but it’s a strange feeling. It’s happening and it feels a little weird.”

Over the off week, the Fire lost a friendly 1-0 to Minnesota United FC of the NASL. Here’s the Fire team: Sean Johnson (Alec Kann 60’); Wells Thompson, Jalil Anibaba, Austin Berry, Gonzalo Segares (Hunter Jumper 69’); Patrick Nyarko (Yazid Atouba 43’), Chris Rolfe (Leo Lelis* 56’), Jeff Larentowicz (Victor Pineda 71’), Corben Bone (Brendan King 73’); Maicon Santos (Colin Rolfe* 67’), Sherjill MacDonald (Quincy Amarikwa 67’)

NEW YORK RED BULLS The New York Red Bulls put an end to their winless streak after four matches, defeating Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 5 points from 5 matches. LAST MATCH

The Red Bulls broke through in the 55th minute. Jonny Steele whipped in a ball from the left side and a swiveling Dax McCarty managed to flick it past Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath and off the far post with the outside of his boot despite being tightly marked.

But seconds after entering the game as a substitute, Conor Casey struck for the leveller. He got onto the end of a long throw-in from Sheanon Williams and headed the ball in from close range for his goal with Philadelphia.

The winner came in the 81st minute through a touch of sheer class. Thierry Henry brought down a delicate pass from Peguy Luyindula with his thigh before beating MacMath with a smooth left-footed strike from inside the area.

Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke made two changes to the team that dropped a 1-0 result to the Montréal Impact. Jamison Olave came into the back four for the suspended Brandon Barklage, and Tim Cahill started up top in place of Fabian Espindola.

NEW YORK RED BULLS (4-4-2): Luis Robles - Kosuke Kimura, Jamison Olave, Markus Holgersson, Heath Pearce - Eric Alexander (Lloyd Sam 73), Juninho, Dax McCarty, Jonny Steele - Tim Cahill (Thierry Henry 59), Peguy Luyindula.

TEAM NEWS The victory was the first as a head coach for Mike Petke, following an 0-2-2 start. “This was three weeks in the

making,” Petke said. “They earned it. They earned it through their play the last couple of weeks, they earned it through their play Saturday and it’s just something to build on.”

After returning from international duty with Australia, Tim Cahill was carrying a nagging calf injury and was advised not to play for two weeks. But Cahill started in a more advanced role than usual, playing 59 minutes while wearing the captain’s armband.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“I basically gave them no option,” Cahill said. “For the boss’ sake and the club, you have to give them headaches and make sure that you make yourself available because Thierry was injured as well, I didn’t even really know. … I think it was a good enough risk to take because of the scenario that we had today. I just feel that for everyone this is what we should do. Players should play regardless. When I got back I was ruled out for two weeks and I wasn’t happy. I said, ‘At least give me a chance to prove my fitness and then we’ll see in the game.’ I felt fine. I felt like I was getting in behind, winning headers, closing people down, creating chances for others.”

Thierry Henry also returned earlier than expected, coming off the substitutes’ bench for the final half-hour and netting his first goal of 2013. Henry missed the Montréal match with a knee sprain.

“I’m still not 100 percent. That’s why I couldn’t start,” Henry said. “We did agree with [head coach Mike Petke] to not put me out there right from the start. I said to him if it’s 20 minutes I’ll try to give my best or if it’s five, if it’s one minute. I’m still not at the best with my knee, but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. At the end of the day, the most important thing was the win, no matter who would’ve have scored.”

Said Juninho: “We started the week knowing he wasn’t healthy enough to start the game but we knew he could come in and change the game. He showed, once again, how important he is to us.”

Fabian Espíndola, who started each of the first four matches this season, was kept out of the Philadelphia contest with a hamstring injury.

“Espíndola and Cahill, we’re monitoring them,” Petke said. “Thierry came out and played a bit today. He’s still doing well, he’s somebody who is tough to get off the field along with Cahill, but we need to monitor them in the right way.”

Luyindula started a second straight match up top for the Red Bulls, playing the full 90 minutes for the first time in MLS. “I’m not just a straight striker, I’m not just a target-man who stays in front of the goal and just waiting for the balls,” said Luyindula. “I can make my team play, I can help them defensively, I can help them wide. I have so many things to bring to this team.”

Luis Robles started a fifth game in goal for the Red Bulls, with Santiago Castano again the unused substitute ‘keeper as Kevin Hartman nears availability for selection.

“We need to monitor [Hartman] and we brought him in for a reason,” Petke said. “We obviously understand being that he didn’t go through a preseason that it wasn’t going to be as if he was 100 percent ready. But we’re pushing him as best we can and every day he’s showing improvement, with fitness and everything, so I’m looking [for him to be available] hopefully very, very shortly.”

The Fire will close out the 2013 MLS Regular Season on the road at Red Bull Arena Oct. 27 at 4:00 p.m. CT (My50/UniMas/La Ley 107.9). The Men in Red took the 2012 series 2-1-0. The Fire welcomed the Red Bulls to Toyota Park June 17 and found an early goal from Patrick Nyarko in just the 4th minute before using a 68th strike from Gonzalo Segares and an 81st minute tap-in from Chris Rolfe to defeat the Red Bulls 3-1. In the mid-week, mid-day match in triple digit heat, the Fire fell 1-0 to a Thierry Henry wonder-strike at Red Bull Arena July 18. In the final leg, the Fire gave a complete team performance and were led by two Sherjill MacDonald goals to defeat the Red Bulls 2-0 at Red Bull Arena Oct. 6. QUICK KICKS vs. New York Red Bulls (1-2-2; 5 pts.) • The Fire hold a 22-12-9 all-time regular season advantage over the Red Bulls, including a 12-3-6 record in matches played at home. • The Men in Red have not lost to the New York side at home since a 3-0 loss to the then MetroStars May 14, 2005 at Soldier Field. • Fire forward Chris Rolfe has seven career goals against the Red Bulls, including a hat trick in a 5-2 win over the Red Bulls Oct. 23, 2008. • Rolfe’s strike partner Sherjill MacDonald notched his first multi-goal MLS game Oct. 6, 2012 when his brace lead the Fire to a 2-0 victory at Red Bull Arena.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (0-3-1; 1 pt.) enter their 16

th season of MLS play after

posting a 17-11-6 record, earning 57 points, tied with the 2000 season for the highest point total in club history. Continuity is key for head coach Frank Klopas this season as the team returns 19 players from the 2012 squad that qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2009, including veterans Logan Pause, Patrick Nyarko and Gonzalo Segares. Offseason acquisitions Jeff Larentowicz, Joel Lindpere, Maicon Santos and Dilly Duka bolster the roster for the Men in Red. Sean Johnson returns for his fourth campaign with the Fire. Reigning MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry is set to pair with German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich in central defense. The strike tandem of Sherjill MacDonald and 2012 Fire MVP and Golden Boot winner Chris Rolfe will serve as the scoring force for the Fire in 2013. ATHLETICO INJURY REPORT: April 2, 2013 QUESTIONABLE

FIRE – NEW YORK RED BULLS CONNECTIONS Current Fire midfielder Joel Lindpere spent the first three seasons of his MLS career with the Red Bulls. The Estonian international joined the Red Bulls prior to the 2010 season and in three seasons, scored 15 goals and added 18 assists in 97 MLS Regular Season appearances. Lindpere scored his first MLS goal in the Red Bulls’ season opener against the Fire March 27, 2010. The midfielder joined the Fire Jan. 4, 2013 in exchange for a 2013 International Roster Spot. A product of Montville, N.J., Fire midfielder Dilly Duka came up through the New York Red Bulls Academy system before matriculating to Rutgers University. On Feb. 4, 2013 the Fire acquired Duka and the right of first refusal to U.S. international Robbie Rogers from the Columbus Crew in exchange for striker Dominic Oduro. Two current Red Bulls, forward Andre Akpan and midfielder Brandon Barklage, spent time with the Chicago Fire PDL squad during their collegiate careers. Red Bulls rookie midfielder Ian Christianson was a three-year Fire Academy player prior to his collegiate career at Georgetown University. RETURNING TO FULL STRENGTH The recent break in MLS play gave Chicago Fire Head Coach Frank Klopas an opportunity to return his lineup to full strength. Sean Johnson (USA) and Joel Lindpere (Estonia) returned to the Fire after representing their respective nations in FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Currently working towards full fitness following injuries are Dilly Duka (hamstring), Arne Friedrich (hamstring), Steven Kinney (quadriceps) and Michael Videira (concussion). Arne Friedrich, who spent two weeks in Berlin receiving treatment for a hamstring strain, returned to Toyota Park on Wednesday, March 27 and resumed training with the squad. Captain Logan Pause, who missed the first four games of the season with a quadriceps injury, returned to full training March 12 and was named to the 18-man roster against Chivas USA March 24. CHICAGO FIRE LOAN KELLEN GULLY TO THE ATLANTA SILVERBACKS The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Monday that the club has loaned forward Kellen Gulley to the Atlanta Silverbacks. The 18-year-old Homegrown striker is currently training with the NASL side. Per club and MLS policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. “This loan is a great opportunity for Kellen to earn consistent playing time,” said Fire President of Soccer Operations Javier Leon. “Kellen is a young player with great potential. We are looking forward to monitoring his development and progress while he is in Atlanta.” Gulley joined the Fire on Aug. 11, 2011 as the second Homegrown Player in club history. A product of the Mississippi Fire Juniors, Gulley earned valuable experience in MLS Reserve League and U.S. Soccer Development Academy matches during the 2012 season. Born in Clinton, Miss., Gulley was named to the U.S. Soccer U-17 Residency Program in January 2010 and earned eight caps at the U-17 level, tallying four goals during international competition in 2009 and 2010. CHICAGO FIRE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES P.L.A.Y.S. PROGRAM The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced the launch of the Chicago Fire Foundation P.L.A.Y.S. Program (Participate, Learn, Achieve Youth Soccer) created in partnership with World Sport Chicago. This first of its kind program integrates soccer with social and emotional learning (SEL) to not only help kids learn and enjoy soccer, but also strengthen academic performance. The 10-week program, beginning April 1, serves 256 third through fifth grade boys and girls at eight Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) schools across Chicago. “For more than 15 years, the Chicago Fire Foundation has strived to make a positive impact on the lives of underserved youth in the Chicagoland area,” said Chicago Fire owner Andrew Hauptman. “The P.L.A.Y.S. Program takes youth soccer programs to a new level by also building skills shown to help kids in the classroom. We are very pleased to be part of creating a new opportunity with our partners to take advantage of our unique position and continue to utilize the power of soccer across our community.” The uniqueness of the P.L.A.Y.S. program is the integration of soccer and a curriculum focused on instilling grit as a means to grow social and emotional learning (SEL) skills of youth. Research into grit has shown that kids with a high degree of emotional control, goal setting and attainment, cooperation and respect, and communication and teamwork are able to more effectively handle adversity and perform well in school. With the collaboration of World Sport Chicago, AUSL, the University of North Carolina and the University of Chicago and Mindful Practices, the Chicago Fire Foundation has developed the first youth sports curriculum that uses sport to develop grit in students. “World Sport Chicago is proud to be working with the Fire in creating such an innovative sport program,” said Scott Myers, executive director of World Sport Chicago. “With the help of AUSL and our university partners, we believe we and the Fire will be able to demonstrate that sport can be a key tool not only in providing youth with a fun and healthy activity but also in strengthening their academic skills.” Kicking off April 1, the students participating in the program will engage in 10 weeks of instruction via five out-of-school hours each week, plus an additional three game days. The eight schools chosen for the inaugural year of the P.L.A.Y.S. Program are Bradwell School of Excellence (South Shore), Bethune School of Excellence (North Lawndale), Casals School of Excellence (Humboldt Park), Deneen School of Excellence (Englewood), Herzl School of Excellence (North Lawndale), Piccolo School of Excellence (North Edgewood), and Curtis School of Excellence (Roseland). The program will conclude with a celebration event scheduled to take place at the Chicago Fire vs. Portland Timbers game at Toyota Park on June 8, 2013.

RED BULLS AT CHICAGO FIRE – APRIL 7, 2013 – 5:00 PM ET

BULLETIN BOARD NEW YORK TAKES ON CHICAGO FIRE SUNDAY ON ESPN2 Coming off their first win of the MLS season, the New York Red Bulls hit the road to battle the Chicago Fire at TOYOTA Park on Sunday at 5:00 PM ET. The match will be televised live on ESPN2 and aired locally in Spanish on ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM. New York defeated the Philadelphia Union, 2-1, last Saturday at Red Bull Arena to give rookie head coach Mike Petke his first MLS win. After Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty and Union forward Conor Casey traded goals in the second half, substitute and 2012 MLS Most Valuable Player finalist Thierry Henry, coming off a left knee injury, tallied his first goal of the year to give the Red Bulls the three points. The win vaulted New York to five points off a 1-2-2 record in the young 2013 MLS season. The Red Bulls continue a start of the campaign that see them play five out of seven matches on the road when they travel to the Windy City to take on the Fire. Chicago (0-3-1, 1 pt.) is still searching for its first win of the year and should be well-rested heading into its third home game of the season following a bye week from MLS play. The Fire’s last MLS match was a 4-1 loss at home to Chivas USA. Chicago picked up its only point of the year in a 0-0 tie against Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park March 16. New York is 12-22-9 all-time against Chicago and 3-12-6 on the road. Last year, the Red Bulls went 1-2-0 versus Chicago. In the teams’ last encounter, Chicago won, 2-0, on Oct. 6 at Red Bull Arena. In the only match in Chicago, the Fire earned three points with a 3-1 victory over the Red Bulls. RED BULLS EARN FIRST WIN, TOPPLE PHILADELHPIA 2-1 Forward Thierry Henry’s first goal of the season in the 81st minute lifted the New York Red Bulls to their first win of the season – a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena Saturday afternoon. Midfielder Dax McCarty also found the back of the net for the Red Bulls, who improved to five points off a 1-2-2 record and helped provide head coach Mike Petke with his first-ever win at the helm. The Red Bulls had the first scoring opportunities of the match. In the 18th minute, McCarty couldn’t get his volley on target, latching onto an Eric Alexander feed. Three minutes later, McCarty slid Jonny Steele through and the midfielder cut it to Peguy Luyindula, who shot it just wide. With four minutes to play in the half, Steele’s right footed attempt off a Luyindula pass went over the crossbar. New York took the lead in the 55th minute. After a Red Bulls corner kick was cleared, Juninho played it back to Steele, who hit the ball into the box. McCarty was able to flick it on off the right post and into the back of the net. Philadelphia equalized in the 63rd minute. Sheanon Williams’ long throw-in was met at the near post by substitute Conor Casey and the Union forward headed it in. Coming off a left MCL sprain, Henry, who replaced Tim Cahill in the 59th minute, nearly gave the Red Bulls the lead again, hitting a bicycle kick from a McCarty cross past the right post. With 10 minutes to play, Steele forced goalkeeper Zac MacMath to block his blast from 12 yards out. Henry found the back of the net and got the eventual match-winner in the 81st minute. Heath Pearce played the ball ahead to Luyindula and the French forward chipped it to Henry. Henry took a touch, turned and fired it home.

2-1 win over Philadelphia last Saturday. Cahill started and logged 59 minutes before being substituted for Thierry Henry. Cahill was called up for Australia’s qualifier against Oman on March 26 in Sydney, Australia and scored his 27th goal in his 61st appearance for his national team in a come-from-behind 2-2 tie against Oman. Cahill nodded home Luke Wilkshire’s corner kick in the 52nd minute to make the score 2-1 before the Socceroos earned a point following Brett Holman’s equalizer. The Australian has started in four matches for New York this season. After joining the Red Bulls during the 2012 season, Cahill started in 12 regular season matches and two postseason games, notching a goal and three assists. Australia has a game in hand on Jordan and Oman. Defender Roy Miller also returned after tallying his 37th cap for Costa Rica in a 1-0 loss to the United States on March 22 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. A member of the Red Bulls since 2010, Miller has started in two regular season matches this year. He has amassed 81 appearances and 11 assists in Major League Soccer for New York. RESERVES EARN FIRST WIN, BEATING COLUMBUS, 3-2 The New York Red Bulls earned their first win in MLS Reserve League play, topping the Columbus Crew, 3-2, at Montclair State University Sunday morning. Both sides are now 1-1-0 this season. Columbus took the lead in the 18th minute. Ethan Finlay made a run with the ball towards the end line and his cross was deflected out towards the penalty spot. An open Konrad Warzycha was there to head it into the back of the net. New York responded a minute later with a goal of their own. Lloyd Sam swung a cross towards the back post and Marius Obekop tucked it in, as goalkeeper Matt Lampson got a piece of the attempt but could not prevent the ball from crossing the line. The Red Bulls then went 2-1 up in the 29th minute when Ruben Bover’s corner kick was headed into the Columbus net by Crew defender Bernardo Anor. Bover was involved in New York’s third goal right before halftime, serving a cross-field ball into Akpan’s path. Akpan drove towards goal, was able to shrug off the pressure of a Crew defender and knocked it past Lampson. Columbus’ Shawn Sloan pulled one back for the visiting Crew, shooting it past goalkeeper Santiago Castaño in second half stoppage time. NEW YORK TO SEE FAMILIAR FACE LINDPERE The New York Red Bulls may see former midfielder Joel Lindpere on the Chicago Fire for the first time this season Sunday.
