I HAVE 14, DO I HEAR 15?…is the first Mariners left-hander to win 14 or more since Jamie Moyer (21) in 2003, and is one of only 6 pitchers (8x) to win 14 or more overall since 2003: Felix Hernandez, 3x, (19 in ‘09, 14 in ‘07 & ‘11); Moy-er (‘03); Miguel Batista (16 in ‘07); Joel Pineiro (16 in ‘03); Gil Meche (15 in ‘03).

TWO CAN PLAY THIS GAME…has recorded 5 starts this season allowing 1 or fewer runs in 8.0 or more innings pitched (the Felix Quality Start)…tied for 4th-most such starts in the Majors this season, trailing only: 1. Felix Hernandez (11); 2. R.A. Dickey (7); 3. Bartolo Colon (6); and tied with Matt Cain, Cole Hamels, Justin Verlander, James Shields and Jered Weaver (5).

HE’S QUALITY…Vargas recorded 10 consecutive quality starts June 26-Aug. 8, the longest stretch by a Mariners starter this season (Felix Hernan-dez, 6), and a career high (prev: 7, April 14-May 20, 2010)…was 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA (16 ER, 73.2 IP) during this stretch…leads team with 20 quality starts, and T3rd in the AL with 20 quality starts this season…was 5th-longest QS streak in the Majors this season…his 19 quality starts mark the third straight year he’s had at least 18 (18 in ‘11, 21 in ‘10).

THE STOPPER…Vargas has taken the mound following a Mariners loss in 16 of his 30 starts this season, and had great success…the left-hander has posted an 10-4 record with a 2.87 ERA (35 ER, 109.2 IP) in his 16 starts following a team loss.

LONGBALL DATA…has allowed 12 home runs over his last 14 starts (7 HR in last 10 GS), after allowing a club-record-tying 5 home runs June 20 at Arizona…allowed 11 home runs in month of June to match the club record…joins Gaylord Perry (May, 1982), Scott Bankhead (May, 1987) & Jamie Moyer (May, 2004) as one of only four Mariners to allow 11 HR in a calendar month…set a club record allowing at least one HR in 12 consecutive starts May 14-July 16.

ROLLIN’…Oliver Perez worked 1.0 scoreless innings last night, and has not allowed a run in his last 20 appearances (14.2 IP) since July 8…the 20 consecutive relief appearances without allowing a run is tied for 4th-longest in club history, but is the 2nd-longest this season (Luetge - 22).

STILL GOLDEN…Franklin Gutierrez made an error Tuesday night, his first since Aug. 20, 2009…Guti went 301 consecutive games in the outfield (293 starts) without an error, with an American League record 846 consecutive chances between fielding miscues…the previous AL record was 723 consecutive errorless chances by Darin Erstad, and he fell short of the MLB record of 938 by Darren Lewis.

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS…the Mariners are 50-17 (.746) when scoring 4+ runs, compared to 19-59 (.244) when scoring 3 or less…scored 3 or fewer in 11 of last 13 G, going 5-8 during stretch.

JUMPING AHEAD…the Mariners have scored first in 83 of their 145 games this season, ranking 2nd in the Majors behind the Angels (86 of 145)…the Mariners are 54-29 (.651) when scoring first, and 27-20 (.574) when scoring in the first inning.

HITTING CATCHERS…John Jaso (36 GS) and Jesus Montero (49 GS) have combined to start 85 of the Mariners 145 games…each are batting over .300 when playing catcher, with Montero ranking 3rd among AL catchers (.307/58x189) and Jaso 4th (.305/36x118) -- min. 30 G as catcher…Montero (10 HR), Miguel Olivo (9 HR) and Jaso (5 HR) have combined for a club-record 24 home runs by catchers (old record was 22 in 2000)…overall, Mariners backstops rank 2nd in AL batting .275 (149x542), trailing the Twins (.311/168x541).

FIVE SPOT…Felix Hernandez recorded his 5th shutout of the Aug. 27 at Minnesota…the 5 shutouts are a Mariners single-season record, and tied for the most in a season by American League pitcher dating back to the 1989 season…only Roger Clemens (1992), David Wells (1998) & Bert Blyleven (1989) have had 5 ShO in a season since then.

MONTERO MASH NOTES…Jesus Montero hit his 15th home run Sept. 2 off Jered Weaver; he is 2nd on the team in HR (Seager-18)…currently 6th-most in rookie club history…if he leads the team in HR, will become first Mariners rookie as team leader in longballs since Alvin Davis in 1984…Montero had his career-high 9-game hitting streak (.394/13x33) snapped Wednesday night.THE REVERSE SPLIT…Michael Saunders (LH batter) is hitting higher vs. left-handed pitchers (.283/43x152, 6 HR) compared to right-handed pitchers (.232/69x297, 9 HR) this season…the reverse split is one of the highest in all of baseball this season with a .051 difference, trailing Texas’ David Murphy (.084 diff - .385 vs. LHP, .301 vs. RHP).
