The Knights and the Rattlers have only met one time on the football field in the history of the two programs, back in the 1987 season. Florida A&M won the contest 19-14 in Tallahassee.

UCF was still NCAA Division II in 1987 and still three seasons away from jumping to NCAA Division I FCS. The Knights didn’t join FBS until 1996.

In 1987 UCF went 9-4 overall with wins over Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State and Liberty, and losses to Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Southern and Troy.

The Knights’ leading rusher was Mark Giacone, the quarterback was Darin Slack, and top receiver was Bernard Ford.

8 The UCF football team returns to action after suffering its first loss in 745 days to end the 2018 campaign, which snapped a nation-leading 25-game winning streak. The win streak was a UCF and American Athletic Conference record, marked the 22nd longest in FBS history, and was the fourth longest since 2000 (Miami, 34 - 2000-03; Florida State, 29 - 2012-14; Alabama, 26 - 2015-16).

LAST TIME OUTSenior defensive lineman Titus Davis took a knee on the 35-yard-line, his silence only interrupted by teammates who approached to extend their hand or a hug.

Senior linebacker Pat Jasinski hugged quarterback McKenzie Milton and told him he loved him like a brother.

Senior punter Mac Loudermilk thanked a slew of teammates one by one before taking a moment for himself to stand near the end zone and soak up the scene before him as memories of the past five years brought tears to his eyes.

The No. 7 UCF football team didn’t get the ride-off-into-the-sunset ending it was hoping for in its 40-32 loss to No. 11 LSU at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

But this journey was something they’ll never forget.

“I wouldn’t trade this for anything in the world. Do I wish this game would have come out a little bit differently? Yeah. It’s bittersweet,” Loudermilk said. “What I want is for people to know this team pushes through any adversity there is, no matter what it is. I hope we stir the pot for expansion. I hope we’ve opened some people’s eyes that we play real ball, and we can play with anybody. There is no limit to this team. Orlando has a hometown team and I think the school is only going to skyrocket from here.”

MEDIA POLICIESORLANDO’S HOMETOWN TEAM NOTESAWESOME ACADEMICS8 This past spring, UCF Athletics posted a department grade-point average of 3.24, the fifth highest in program history, which now gives UCF 11+ years and 23 straight semesters with a department average GPA of 3.0 or better.8 This spring, 64 percent of UCF’s student-athletes posted a 3.0 or better, with 30 Knights posting a 4.0 GPA for the semester.8 The Knights’ football team earned NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition award this past spring for posting a multi-year score within the top 10 percent of all teams in the sport, the third time in the last four years the team has done so.

SOLD OUT SEASON TICKETS8 All of the success on the field has led to success in the seats, as season tickets for all home games at Spectrum Stadium have been sold out for the first time in program history in 2019.8 The atmosphere in the “Bounce House” is always electric and recently 247 Sports ranked Spectrum Stadium as the fourth toughest home-field advantage behind Alabama, Clemson and Georgia.8 ESPN.com recently sited UCF’s Zombie Nation tradition among the best in college football. When “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation starts playing inside the stadium and 45,000 fans start bouncing...let’s just say there’s a reason for the nickname. Don’t mind the shaking.

THREE NEW YEAR’S SIX BOWLS SINCE 20138 UCF played in its first BCS Bowl game in 2013, defeating Baylor in an upset in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, finishing the year ranked 10th in the AP Top 25.8 The Knights have now played in back-to-back New Year’s Six bowls, defeating Auburn in the 2018 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl to secure an undefeated national championship season in 2017, and then playing LSU in the 2019 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl last year.8 UCF is one of just nine teams in all of FBS to have played in three BCS/New Year’s Six bowls since 2013, joining Florida State, Michigan State, Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Washington and Auburn.

KNIGHTS IN THE TOP 258 The Knights are ranked 17th in both the Preseason AP Top 25 Poll and the Preseason Amway Coaches Poll prior to the start of the 2019 season.8 It marks the highest UCF has been ranked before the season, the second time being ranked prior to the season and the second straight year earning a preseason ranking.8 As it stands, UCF has been ranked in the Top 25 for 28 straight weeks, dating back to week 6 of the 2017 season. The Knights have been in the rankings 40 times in total with the first being week 11 of the 2010 season. UCF’s highest ranking was six, the final ranking of the 2017 season.

PICKED TO WIN THE AMERICAN8 UCF was picked to win the American Athletic Conference by the polling media at this year’s American Kickoff in Newport, R.I.8 The Knights have won six conference championships in program history, but last season was the first time they were predicted to win their league. UCF is now 1-0 when picked to win the league and will aim to keep that record perfect in 2019.

UNISWAG8 The UCF equipment staff and marketing department have outdone themselves in recent years, coming up with some of the best uniforms in the nation. In fact, in 2018, the Knights’ #UCFinSpace uniform took home the UniSwag Uniform of the Year.8 Look for new combinations of uniforms in 2019, with new specialty unis potentially on the horizon.

PRETTY DARN OFFENSIVE8 UCF has been one of the best offensive teams in the country the last two years and has put up the points to prove it, scoring 30 or more points in 26 straight games, which is the longest streak in the AP Poll era (since 1936).8 The Knights have scored 40 or more points in 15 of their last 26 games and have reached the 50-point plateau nine times in the last 26 outings.8 UCF finished the 2018 season ranked sixth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 43.2 points per game and fifth in the nation in total offense, averaging 522.7 yards per game.

RUSHING TO RECORDS8 The UCF running game was outstanding in 2018, setting new program records with 3,448 rushing yards, 265.2 rushing yards per game, 5.8 yards per rush and 43 rushing touchdowns.8 The Knights’ 265.2 yards per game ranked eighth in the nation.8 With three key contributors returning to the backfield in Greg McCrae, Adrian Killins Jr. and Otis Anderson, UCF is ready to run all over 2019.

MCCRAE MAKING MEMORIES8 Former walk-on Greg McCrae made the most of his time in the backfield last season, becoming the first UCF back to rush for over 1,000 yards since 2013.8 His 1,182 yards on the ground were the fourth most in a single season in UCF history, while his 8.9 yards-per-carry average ranked second in the nation and set a program record.8 McCrae found the end zone 10 times on the ground and once through the air in 2018.

AK ALL THE WAY8 Adrian Killins Jr. has made his mark on the UCF program with his blazing speed, earning all-conference honors the last two seasons in The American.8 Killins holds UCF’s program record with a 5.75 yards-per-carry average for his career, is tied for seventh in school history with 25 total touchdowns and is 10th with 1,753 career rushing yards.8 A former track star in high school, Killins had a 100-yard kick return and an 87-yard rushing touchdown as a freshman in 2017.

WIMBUSH UNDER CENTER8 UCF has been led to unprecedented success the last two seasons thanks to All-America quarterback McKenzie Milton. Milton, who will miss the 2019 season due to a leg injury suffered at the end of the 2018 season, finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting and was The American Offensive Player of the Year two years in a row.8 After a quarterback competition in the offseason, head coach Josh Heupel named Brandon Wimbush the starting qb on Aug. 22.8 Wimbush, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, went 9-3 as a starter with the Fighting Irish, rushing for a school-record 14 touchdowns in 2017.8 True freshman Dillon Gabriel and redshirt freshman Quadry Jones also impressed in camp.

RECEIVER DEPTH8 The Knights return plenty of options at receiver, including two starting wideouts from a year ago in Gabriel Davis and Tre Nixon.8 Davis earned second team all-conference honors in 2018 after catching 53 passes for 815 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore.8 Nixon wasn’t far behind, hauling in 40 balls for 562 yards and four scores in his first season with the Knights after transferring from Ole Miss.

SERIOUS PROTECTION8 UCF brings back a veteran offensive line, led by three starters from 2018 in center Jordan Johnson, tackle Jake Brown and guard Cole Schneider. All three were first team all-conference in 2018.8 The o-line helped the Knights set school records in rushing, while allowing only 19 sacks.8 As an offensive unit, UCF set another school record in 2018, committing just 14 total turnovers on the year.

Knights on the Honor Roll

BAKING TURNOVERS8 The UCF defense has been really good at turning its opponents over the last two seasons, ranking sixth in the nation with 28 turnovers gained in 2018. 8 In fact, the Knights have recorded at least one turnover in 32 straight games, dating back to 2016, a streak that leads the nation by 14 games (Indiana, 18).8 UCF was third in the nation with 14 fumbles recovered in 2018. Linebacker Nate Evans had two himself, returning one for a 94-yard touchdown at ECU.8 The Knights finished the 2018 campaign ranked third in the nation in turnover margin with a mark of 1.08.

GRANT IS GOOD8 Richie Grant returns for his junior season to lead the UCF defense from the safety position.8 A watch list candidate for the Bednarik Award, the Jim Thorpe Award, the Nagurski Trophy and the Walter Camp Award, Grant led the Knights with 109 tackles last season.8 Grant’s six interceptions in 2018 were the third most in a single season by a UCF player and ranked third in the nation.

DEEP DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD8 The UCF secondary looks like its running back, wide receiver or offensive line groups when talking about depth, returning Grant, as well as all-conference honorees Nevelle Clarke and Brandon Moore.8 Clarke led UCF with 13 pass break-ups and had two interceptions in 2018, while Moore added 10 break-ups himself. All three defensive backs started 13 games a year ago.8 Antwan Collier looks to replace Kyle Gibson at the other safety position, but there is plenty of depth in the defensive backfield.

LINEBACKER LINEUP8 The Knights return two of their three starting linebackers from 2018, as first team all-conference honoree Nate Evans and Eric Mitchell are back in the fold to lead the Knights.8 Evans totaled 99 tackles and had 10.0 tackles-for-loss and two sacks as a junior last season.8 Mitchell had 44 tackles and two sacks with one interception in 2018.8 Eriq Gilyard is also back to provide veteran depth, while Tatum Bethune and Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste look to make an impact as true freshmen.

NEW FACES ON THE LINE8 The defensive line is one of the biggest question marks for the UCF defense going into 2019, as the Knights lost starters Joey Connors, A.J. Wooten and Titus Davis, as well as Trysten Hill, who now plays for the Dallas Cowboys.8 Brendon Hayes returns, though, after recording 11.0 tackles for loss and three sacks after starting 12 games and earning all-conference honors last season.8 Randy Charlton looks to take the other defensive end spot with plenty of Knights pushing for time on the inside.

SPECIAL NOTESKICKIN’ IT8 Matthew Wright left UCF as the program’s all-time leader in field goals made, field-goal percentage, extra points made and consecutive extra points made.8 Somebody else will be doing the kicking this season, as Dylan Barnas looks to put some balls through the uprights in 2019.8 Freshman Daniel Obarski will take on kickoff duties.

OTHER SPECIALTIES8 Mac Loudermilk and Caleb Perez are also gone, so there will be a new punter and a new long snapper for UCF in 2019.8 Andrew Osteen sits atop the depth chart as punter, while Alex Ward takes over snapping duties.

Josh Heupel is the 11th head coach in the history of UCF Football. UCF Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Daniel J. White announced the hire on Dec. 5, 2017.

Heupel made an immediate impact during his first year at UCF, leading the Knights to their second consecutive undefeated regular season and American Athletic Conference Championship. Heupel became just the third coach in history to lead a team to an undefeated regular season in his first year coaching. (Chris Peterson, Boise State, 2003 and Larry Coker, Miami, 2001).

Preaching a 1-0 mentality every week, Heupel’s fast-paced offense posted 43.2 points per game that ranked sixth in the nation with an average margin of victory of 20.5 points. The offense churned out an average of 522.7 yards per game to finish the season ranked fifth in the nation. The ground game set a program single-season record with 3,448 yards on the ground. UCF averaged 265.2 yards rushing per game, good for eighth in the country. Running back Greg McCrae became UCF’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 2013 with 1,182 yards on the ground, the fourth most in program history.

The passing attack was also one of the best in country behind quarterbacks McKenzie Milton and Darriel Mack Jr. UCF averaged 257.5 yards per game and 29 touchdowns on the year, including 14.94 yards per completion for the ninth best mark in the country. The quarterbacks were effective, posting the 21st best passing efficiency mark of 149.71, while throwing just seven interceptions, the fewest by a UCF team in program history. The offensive line kept the backfield clean with just 19 sacks allowed on the season.

Not to be outdone, the UCF defense had a stellar 2018 campaign. UCF allowed just 22.7 points per game and ranked sixth in the nation with 28 forced turnovers on the year. The Knights racked up 8.2 tackles for loss per game, the fifth most in the nation, and had 29 sacks. Richie Grant led the way with six picks, the third most in the nation, while Nate Evans had a pair of fumble recoveries, including a 94-yard touchdown recovery against ECU. Second-half adjustments were key to the Knights’ success, as opponents scored just 8.5 points per second half, including 3.3 points per third quarter.

The Knights put a league-record 17 student-athletes on All-American Athletic Conference teams. Milton became the first player in conference history to repeat as the Offensive Player of the Year. He, offensive linemen Jake Brown, Cole Schneider and Jordan Johnson, linebacker Nate Evans, cornerback Nevelle Clarke and safety Richie Grant earned first-team honors. Wide receiver Gabriel Davis, offensive lineman Wyatt Miller, defensive linemen Titus Davis and Brendon Hayes, linebacker Pat Jasinski, kicker Matthew Wright and running back Adrian Killins, who was also honored as a kick returner, garnered second-team honors, while tight end Michael Colubiale and cornerback Brandon Moore achieved honorable mention status. Milton finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

UCF went 11-0 in the regular season, earning the American Athletic Conference East Division title and a spot in the championship game. The Knights came back from down 17 points to defeat Memphis in The American Championship, 56-41. The Knights earned a berth to the 2019 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, where they ultimately fell to LSU, 40-32, snapping the team’s 25-game win streak.

Heupel was named the First Year Coach of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America and was a finalist for the AP National Coach of the Year Award, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. He led UCF to as high as seventh in both the AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll, the highest regular season rankings in program history. The Knights finished the year ranked 11th in the AP and 12th in the Coaches Poll.

National Championship Playing CareerHeupel was a national-championship winning quarterback at Oklahoma. He was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2000 while leading the Sooners to a victory over Florida State in the 2001 Orange Bowl, sealing the national title for OU. In 2001, Heupel was the Associated Press Player of the Year, Walter Camp Award winner, Archie Griffin Award winner and a consensus All-America performer. During his two seasons as the starting quarterback at Oklahoma, Heupel posted a 20-5 record. He passed for 7,456 yards and 53 touchdowns. Overall, he still ranks among OU’s top three quarterbacks in passing yards, completions and touchdown passes, despite playing just two seasons. He was a junior college All-America performer at Snow College in Utah in 1999, throwing for 2,308 yards and 28 TDs. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.
