Sporting Kansas City kicks off their 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign in the fourth round against USL expansion side Saint Louis FC on Tuesday at Sporting Park. The matchup will be the first competitive meeting between Sporting KC and a club from St. Louis in team history.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Coming off their Week 15 bye in MLS competition, Sporting KC is riding a seven-game unbeaten run and a four-game home winning streak. The club’s two losses through 14 games are fewest in MLS this season and mark the second best start in the team’s 20-year history. Entering Week 15, no team in the league had more goals (22) or assists (26) than Peter Vermes’ side. Midfield playmaker Benny Feilhaber has led the way en route to five goals, an MLS-best seven assists and an MLS Player of the Month award for April. First-year forward Krisztian Nemeth has spearheaded the attack to the tune of six goals, two assists and June’s MLS Player of the Month award. In defense, club captain and U.S. international Matt Besler has anchored a defense that has posted three straight shutouts and seven clean sheets overall (second most in MLS). Goalkeeper Tim Melia, who assumed the starting role in May, leads the league with a 0.50 goals against average and boasts a 4-0-2 record. In doing so, he becomes the first goalkeeper in KC history to go unbeaten in his first six MLS appearances.

SAINT LOUIS FC Led by head coach Dale Schilly, Saint Louis FC is 3-3-5 in their inaugural USL season and sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings, two spots outside the playoff picture. Bryan Gaul leads the team with five goals in all competitions, including two in the Open Cup after the forward scored in both the second and third rounds. However, Gaul will miss Tuesday’s match while serving a one-game suspension for his red card in Saint Louis FC’s penalty shootout win over Minnesota United FC on May 27. In Gaul’s absence, forward Jeremie Lynch will shoulder the attacking load for Tuesday’s visitors. Lynch has scored three USL goals and bagged the 97th-minute game-winner in extra time of a 2-1 Open Cup second round win over the Des Moines Menace on May 20. Forward Mike Ambersley has also contributed two goals and an assist in USL play. Sam Fink and James Musa lead a Saint Louis FC backline that has posted two shutouts in 13 games across all competitions and conceded more than two goals just once. Fink has scored twice, including an equalizer in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the Harrisburg City Islanders, and Musa was the only player to feature in every minute of Saint Louis FC’s USL campaign before resting on Saturday. Mark Pais holds No. 1 goalkeeper duties with a 1.04 GAA in eight games across all competitions, including a penalty shootout win over Minnesota United FC in which he made one save.

#SKCvSTL: MATCH PREVIEW

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is open to all amateur/professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. Similar to other domestic cups worldwide, the U.S. Open Cup is a knockout-style tournament with home field determined by a coin toss. Sporting KC has twice lifted the Dewar Challenge Trophy as champions of the competition in 2004 and 2012, while USL expansion club Saint Louis FC competes in the tournament for the first time. Now in its 102nd edition, the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is headlined by the largest field in the modern era (1995-present) with 89 teams in contention when the first round began last month. Thirty-two teams remain ahead of the fourth round to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, June 16-17. The 2015 champion will win $250,000 in prize money, while the runner-up receives $60,000 and the furthest-advancing team from each lower division league receive $15,000. In addition, the tournament winner qualifies for the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

ABOUT THE LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP

Amateur teams comprised 42 of the 89 entries and entered the competition in the play-in and first rounds. The remaining 47 participants encompassed Division I, Division II and Division III professional clubs, who entered in the second (USL PRO), third (NASL) and fourth (MLS) rounds, respectively. See page 5 for the 2015 schedule and results. A new, geographically-based random draw will result in a fixed bracket from the Round of 16 onward. The Fifth Round draw, to be held Thursday, June 18, will reveal said bracket and determine potential matchups for the remainder of the competition. The 16 Fourth Round winners will be divided geographically (regardless of league affiliation) into groups of four, and a random draw will determine the pairings within each group. Fifth Round: June 30-July 1 Quarterfinals: July 21-22 Semifinals: Aug. 11-12 Final: Sept. 29 or 30

2015 TOURNAMENT FORMAT

Currently in its inaugural season, Saint Louis FC was founded in May 2014 and competes as one of 24 clubs in the United Soccer League (USL), the third tier of professional soccer in the U.S. The team plays home matches at the World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri, and its Major League Soccer affiliate is the Chicago Fire, one of Sporting KC’s rivals. After playing their first two USL matches on the road, Saint Louis FC hosted their first ever home match on April 11, drawing the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-1 before a sellout crowd of 5,280. The club conducted a fan vote to decide the team’s colors and crest. The logo features a fleur-de-lis, which pays tribute to St. Louis’ French heritage, and the crest includes a reference to the year the city was founded in 1764.

ABOUT SAINT LOUIS FC

Saint Louis FC began their inaugural Open Cup campaign home to PDL side Des Moines Menace in the Second Round on May 20. Bryan Gaul put the hosts ahead in the 67th minute and, after a late Des Moines equalizer forced extra time, Jeremie Lynch netted the match-winner in the 97th minute. A Third Round tilt against U.S. international midfielder Miguel Ibarra and Minnesota United FC (NASL) saw Saint Louis FC fall behind shortly after halftime. However, Gaul equalized wIth 10 minutes remaining and the hosts went on to prevail 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout during which Mark Pais made one save.

SAINT LOUIS FC’S MLS CONNECTIONS

Though Saint Louis FC is competing in the U.S. Open Cup for the first time, the city of St. Louis has been home to the tournament champion on 10 previous occasions, most recently in 1988. The city’s 10 total Open Cup titles are tied with Philadelphia for second most, only behind New York City (and its accompanying boroughs).
