Design History: The development of this game evolved over Ume. IniUally the design was very basic and my iniUal design was that of a simulaUon based scenario for healthcare training. As it evolved it took on different formats as well as different elements of the game design. From incepUon to its current state the game takes the player from the point of a traumaUcally injured paUent who requires emergent care and surgical intervenUon. Through collaboraUve game playing among friends the goal is to assist in the care and management of the injured paUent. UlUmately, the paUent must recover fully and walk out of the hospital as a healthy individual-‐that is the WIN. No score to keep, no points to earn, the fun is in the process of assisUng your friends in saving a life. Version 1.0 I polled my nurse colleagues and Facebook nurse friends as to my idea. They liked the idea but though I should add the element of collaboraUon as no one specialty nursing department can single handedly take care of the paUent thus emphasizing teamwork and cohesion; therefore, limiUng the game to only the operaUng room (OR) would discourage all parUcipants. By adding the true progression from admission to discharge and all the healthcare staff the paUent comes in contact with, the element of collaboraUon is evident with each friend that plays the game. CollaboraUon and playing with friends will bring experts to the game and implement the needed adributes that assist in the recovery of the paUent. By adding the element of a traumaUc injury to the mix, they felt that “Chaos” is an overarching component. No one person can save someone, and must rely on co-‐workers and work friends to collaborate and diffuse the chaos surrounding the traumaUc Version 1.10 As the game conUnued to move forward with the help of my friends, nurses and non-‐nurses, a game name was created. The game would be called TraumaRamaPalooza. The name evolved from:
• The Circula7ng Nurse • Guts and Gore R Us • The Nurse Game • Trauma Rama Friday Night Lights • Trauma Palooza • The Knife and Gun Club • Traumaramadon • Hospitalville
Version 1.11 Currently, the game is in V. 1.11, which includes moving the paUent from injury to discharge through collaboraUve teamwork among friends-‐saving one paUent at a Ume.

Game Overview:
Vision Statement: The TraumaRamaPalooza game is an all encompassing healthcare team working in sync to save a life. TraumaRamaPalooza is a real Ume online collaboraUve game for healthcare professionals. From admission to discharge this game provides the player the ability to invite friends to parUcipate in saving the life of an injured paUent. By ways of text message noUficaUons, email or through the launch of the game, the players are alerted to parUcipate. Upon noUficaUon they determine what needed care is to be rendered. Each player has a disUnct role that will determine the care to be provided. As the paUent moves from the ambulance to the emergency room, the paUent is triaged by the nurse and moved throughout the needed departments. Each player idenUfies their role (pharmacist, anesthesia provider, nurse, doctor, physical therapist etc) and the player provides their experUse to ensure the paUent receives the needed care to survive the injury and recover fully in order to walk out of the hospital.

Players demonstrate their skills and know-‐how with others when saving someone’s life. This interacUve online game can be played with your friends by simply inviUng them to parUcipate and join your game network. Market Analysis: I began the environmental scan back in 2009 when I was idenUfying how to develop a training module for a review course at my former job when I worked for a nursing associaUon. I wanted to design a creaUve tool to assist nurses in reviewing content to sit for a cerUficaUon exam in perioperaUve nursing. My findings included the following: • Very few games exists for healthcare providers related to healthcare or nursing. • Most popular game in the United States related to healthcare was OperaUon • Very few games exist that are healthcare related however, none were interacUve,
collaboraUve or online. • Most healthcare games were Jeopardy-‐like or game show in nature which only asked
quesUons related to a specific topic. Next, I conducted a needs assessment via Survey Monkey and sent it to nurse colleagues who were in educator roles, associaUon members in an educator role and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS’s). Need: Conclusive findings idenUfied that there is a need for games for nurses within their specialUes as well as a need for interacUve games for nurses to learn content. Many suggested a simulaUon training course to address this shortcoming within the specialty of perioperaUve nursing as well as in nursing in general . Why this game? This game would promote learning among friends in a non-‐academic format yet it would enUce the player to idenUfy, select and implement treatment modaliUes essenUal in ensuring safe and effecUve care to the paUent. Audience Profile: IniUally, I had intended the game to be specifically for perioperaUve nurses (operaUng room specialty). Aoer posUng on Facebook regarding the proposed game, my nurse friends provided valid ideas and insight. Opening up the game as a downloadable app via a smartphone or tablet to all healthcare professionals, as paUents do not rely solely on one parUcular nursing specialty but rather an all encompassing team of healthcare professionals was the beder choice to ensure parUcipaUon, interacUon, collaboraUon and experUse. Distribu7on: Once the game launches, e-‐postcards and invitaUons will be sent out via Facebook, Twider and LinkedIn contacts, a Facebook Page will be created and encourage followers via Twider. AddiUonally, once interest builds the game will grow and prosper. Once the players discover the “fun factor” of the game this too will increase the number of downloads.

Detailed Game Descrip7ons: The Core Idea: TraumaRamaPalooza is an interacUve collaboraUve online game for healthcare providers to create a virtual healthcare se4ng among friends and colleagues to save a paUent aoer a traumaUc injury. Once you download the game, you determine your network of friends to help you save the paUent. You soon find out that it is important to invite a vast group with diverse healthcare backgrounds to assist you. Each player will take on a specific role and carry out the duUes associated with the role to ensure the paUent is treated and cared for. Each player determines what is needed to care for the specific injury. Through collaboraUve play, players in the game network add insight to what addiUonal care is needed to advance to the next level of care or next provider involved in caring for the paUent in the virtual environment. Background Story: The player designs their “look” based on their role, selects their specific uniform as well as the design details of their virtual environment specific to their pracUce se4ng. The virtual environment is designed by the player with the necessary equipment and supplies to carry out the specific treatment necessary. Once this is done, the game begins by alerUng the players via a text message regarding an injured trauma paUent. Text messages are also sent when friends and colleagues add content to your virtual environment, when they assist you in addiUonal treatments to the paUent and when the paUent is in trouble and you ask for help. Prompts are provided to the players as to the current condiUon of the paUent, if the player does not manage the paUent correctly, they are fired or replaced by the next player involved in the care of the paUent unless they seek friendly advice and assistance. As the paUent moves from one area to the next, the next group of designated players take on the care of the paUent. For example, suppose the paUent arrives via ambulance and he is immediately to go for x-‐rays, those players who assumed the role of x-‐ray staff will be alerted to conduct the process of taking x-‐rays for the paUent, once done, they transport back to the ER for further evaluaUon and the process conUnues among friends and colleagues. From arriving in an ambulance through discharge from the hospital all players take on the tasks of making sure the paUent is well cared and managed with the goal of a complete and safe recovery with the assistance of friends and colleagues.

Detailed Game Descriptions: Game Objec7ve: How do you win? The game is designed to ensure the paUent walks Out of the hospital without any problems. The paUent will display a happy face and walk out of the hospital where he or she will be greeted by friends and family, that is a win! Once the paUent leaves and all is good the process starts again, via a text message to alert the players a new paUent has arrived. Game World: This game is to be played online via a downloadable app to a smartphone or tablet. Game Play Steps:

or department 5. Invite your friends and colleagues-‐the more the beder and in all areas of healthcare 6. The player will select the method in which you wish to invite friends and colleagues
such as the Facebook, Twider and LinkedIn interface. 7. Once items 1-‐6 are complete the game will alert you via text message that an
ambulance has just pulled into the emergency room with a specific type of injured paUent. You can chose to ignore, pass or launch the game to parUcipate.
8. Your game network will be alerted that you iniUated treatment, at this point, those in your game network and in the similar role, will add to what you have done in your virtual space/environment and the care you have provided. 9. As the next group arrives on the scene, they will be prompted to provide the necessary treatment to assist the paUent in ge4ng beder.
10. Once all players parUcipate and collaborate in the true essence of a trauma, the paUent gets beder and progresses in his or her recovery thus facilitaUng the paUent to eventually leave the hospital and walk out the door where safe and effecUve care was provided.
11. There are no points or scores to keep as the goal is to save a life. Each move a player makes will either capture a correct treatment or prolong the injury of the paUent. As correct treatments are performed the paUent progresses to ulUmately ge4ng beder.
