A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

ROUND THREE - MARCH 24, 2013 - PANTHERS 3

I AM very pleased to have an opportunity to communicate with Panthers members, sponsors, business partners, supporters and everyone associated with rugby league, with Season 2013 well-underway for the Panthers. I also acknowledge the revised format of the home game rugby league newsletter and the positive relationship and support generated with the Penrith Star newspaper.A number of new very talented players have been welcomed to the

club, and the positive and confident feeling and culture that is building throughout the team suggests our club will go into 2013 quietly confident of having a competitive season and establishing a platform for future success and in this regard I acknowledge the quality leadership of Ivan Cleary and his team support staff.Off the field the Panthers group has performed exceptionally well with the Board and management continuing to strengthen the already

strong bond between the Panthers licensed club and rugby league. The next 12 months will be significant and productive for our Group, the Penrith club and rugby league during which a number of exciting initiatives and developments will eventuate.Regards and best wishes

SEASON 2013 has begun. This promises to be an exciting

year, and another step forward in our journey to becoming the best NRL club in Australia.

There have been many changes over the last 12 months, most significantly in the establishment of our development programs and pathways, from junior league right through to the professional grades.

Our focus remains heavily on providing education and opportunities to the youngsters in our vast junior league, and establishing rugby league as a desirable career choice.

We welcome all our new corporate partners and members, and especially those who have been with us for many years. Your continued support is most appreciated, and highly valued.

On the recruitment front, we have been busy in the marketplace, and welcome a number of new players to the Panther family. I know you are already enjoying watching these fellas play.

Sika Manu is a New Zealand international, and joins us from the highly-successful Melbourne Storm club. Sika is a powerful and skilful forward, and already his class has been made evident during our pre-season training.

Lewis Brown is another Kiwi international, who comes to us

from the Warriors. An extremely fit, durable and mobile forward, Lewis can play any position on the field, and I believe will prove to be a wonderful asset to our club.

Dean Whare comes to us from Manly, and late last season, also earned his rep honours when selected to play for the Kiwis against Australia. His versatility sees Dean cover a number of positions in the backline, where coach Ivan Cleary thinks he can make a real good fit of the fullback position in our team.

I have no doubt young James Segeyaro will be extremely popular with our fans. His sharp and elusive ball-running will add real excitement to the Panthers’ attack.

Forwards like Mose Masoe, Jeremy Latimore, and Anthony Cherrington are players of great promise, with their best football still in front of them, and we look forward to them realising their potential with the Panthers.

Wes Naiqama is an experienced professional. He can cover any number of backline positions, and is also an outstanding goal kicker.

Keep your eye out later in the season for a youngster by the name of James Roberts. I won’t say any more – I will let you be the judge.

These players compliment your favourites from last year, and we look forward over the coming months to seeing these men come together to play passionately for the Panther jersey.

Get to our games early: you won’t want to miss our NYC side, with a number of kids earmarked as future first graders, and two wins under their belts already this season.

Like you, once I get to the football, I’m just a fan, and I’m pretty excited about where our club is heading. Enjoy the 2013 season; see you at the game.

JUST THREE ROUNDS IN and season 2013 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet for the Panthers.

Our pre-season preparations saw us training in all kinds of conditions. From 45 degree heat in Penrith, to the gruelling sandhills at Wanda, and driving rain in New Zealand, we’re prepared to take on opponents in any environment.

Our side looks a lot different this year, but anyone who has spent time around the boys would tell you that the environment is fresh and positive. Our nine new recruits have quickly meshed with their team mates to become a group

with a strong drive to succeed. Our performance wasn’t at the

standard we expect during the round two loss to the Tigers. The loss of Lachlan Coote early in the match affected our attack, but defensively we need to improve.

Today we take on a very strong South Sydney side who many have predicted to seriously challenge for the NRL title his season. Having a good look at them in preview for this week, it is hard to argue with those predictions.

Thanks for coming out to support us today, and I look forward to sharing a great season with you all.

I AM VERY PROUD to be leading the Panthers as captain for season 2013. We have a great bunch of blokes this year: a mix of experienced and up-and-coming players, who are training and playing hard.

Today is an exciting one for our team, as we run out onto Centrebet Stadium for the second time this season to take on South Sydney. To win our first match on home soil against the Raiders in Round 1 was an uplifting experience for our team, and nothing can quite match the excitement of hearing our fans

cheering us on and willing us to win. The loss against the Tigers was a step back for us defence-wise, especially losing Cootie early in the piece, but I am confident we’ll regroup and come back strong.

As Panthers supporters, your role is an important one. The Rabbitohs are sure to give us a run for our money today, but having you here cheering us on will help us get over the line. We’re out here to do you proud, and prove that we really do ‘Own the West.’ Go the mighty Panthers in 2013!

TO OPEN THE SEASON with a victory over competition-favourites the Raiders, after winning all three trial matches in the pre-season, was definitely a pleasing start to 2013.

The boys showed a lot of class and skill during the match, making the most of defensive lapses by the Canberra side, with Jarred Wilson, Sam Scarlett, James Dunley, Pat Hollis, Iszah Yeo, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and George Jennings all crossing the try line to take the match 40-16.

Our round two win over competition favourites the Wests Tigers was obviously a pleasing result.

Losing two key players in George Jennings and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak with 25 minutes to go, and running into a strong wind, the boys showed real character with just 15 players left to finish the game strongly and take the win.

The boys worked extremely hard in the pre-season and are chomping at the bit to play every week.

We welcome back some members of the 2012 campaign as well as some new faces in the squad this year. The

WINDSOR WOLVES commenced their 2013 NSW Cup campaign with a nail-biting win over the Wests Tigers in an extremely high scoring game 44-42, played in warm conditions at Campbelltown Stadium.

Windsor got off to shaky start as the Tigers raced to an early 12 nil inside the first ten minutes.

But in a see-sawing contest the Wolves rallied despite a couple of injuries to claim a vital two points.

Best for the Wolves were Blake Austin, captain Ryan Simpkins, prop Sam Anderson and the Fijian Flyer, Eto Nabuli.

Coach Guy Missio was pleased that the team made the most of its opportunities in attack and acknowledged there is plenty of work to be done in regards to defense.

The fact that on two occasions the Wolves were able to repel three sets of six ultimately proved the difference between the two teams.

Missio was optimistic about his team’s chance in 2013.“Our off season preparations have been quite good

especially with the fitness levels at such a level that only 4 players out of the 40 player squad were not available to play in Round 1. Penrith has added many players to the roster which certainly helps the club with player depth,’’ he said.

‘’Whilst its never easy to single out players who have impressed in pre-season training given all players have to reach certain fitness levels, Eto Nabuli, the new recruit from Fiji, will certainly be one the fans will love with seven tries in pre season games.

‘’He is tall, fast, possesses a strong fend and will definitely get better with experience. My expectation for the season ahead is that if we consistently perform as a team and given the experience of the overall squad, it will lead us to reaching a top 8 spot.”

In preparation for the 2013 season, the Penrith Panthers turned over quite a few players meaning quite a few players had moved elsewhere from the Windsor Wolves including:Junior VaiVai, Evrett Vaurusi (Illawarra Cutters); Mitch Achurch (Leeds Rhinos); Jesse Sene Lefao (Manly Sea Eagles); Shane Shackleton (Mt Pritchard Mounties); Matt Mundine (Newtown Jets); Sarafu Fatiaki (Reclcliffe Dolphins); Arana Taumata (Released – Rugby Union); Chris Armit (Retired); Dean Parata (Wentworthville Magpies) Kurt Foggo , Leivaha Pulu, Junior Tia Kilifi and Etu Uaisele, (Wyong Roos).

Some of the Panthers’ new recruits that may see some game time for the Windsor Wolves include: Sam Anderson , Ethan Cook, Kyle O’Donnell (Newcastle); Mosese Pangai (North Qld Cowboys); Neccrom Areaiiti, James Roberts (South Sydney); Jeremy Latimore (St George); Anthony Cherrington, Mose Masoe (Sydney Roosters); Isaac John (Wakefield), Tom Humble (Wests Tigers) and Etonia Nabuli (Fiji).

The large playing roster that the Panthers have overall has increased competition for places in first grade meaning that some of last year’s first graders may also end up playing for the Wolves during 2013. Graduates of the 2012 Panthers NYC team, Vaipuna Tia Kilifi, Tom Eisenhuth and Sam Hollis are also likely to feature in the team at some stage. Furthermore, with the likes of Matt Moylan, Travis Robinson, Kane Morgan, Jake Grace, Kurt Horton, Danny Galea and Krys Freeman also on the roster, the Wolves have the depth and skill to surpass last year’s fifth position finish.

Panthers members are reminded that admission to all Wolves home games at Windsor is free of charge. Stay tuned throughout the season for some exciting initiatives in conjunction with Penrith Panthers, to be provided to Panthers fans wishing to get behind the Wolves NSW Cup campaign, particularly when they play at home in Windsor.

The Wolves travel to Monty Breen Oval, home of the NSW Cup newcomers; Wyong Roos in what will be another tough encounter in round 3.

Remember to follow the Windsor Wolves on Twitter @WindsorWolves (tag your tweets with #TheWolfPack) or follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/WindsorWolvesRL . Match reviews and previews will also feature on the Panthers website.

The Wolves will like thank all its 2013 sponsors, especially Cooks Plumbing Supplies, Tony Ferguson, Buttsworth Industrial Supplies, Hawkesbury District Independent, Millars Turf Supplies, Fi-Ta, Hawkesbury Accident Repair Centre, Key Plastics, Bernipave, Schweppes, Heartbreak Ridge Paintball, RD & S Prior Draining & Plumbing Contractors & Angels Florists.

group have come together well and they have showed a real willingness to work for each other. I believe our annual “bonding” weekend at Holsworthy Army Barracks has instilled a real sense of team camaraderie and mateship in this squad. The indication I have from how the boys have trained has me feeling very positive and optimistic that we can be competitive again this season.

We have played the first two rounds of the competition confident with the talent we have, and the ability to play well together as a team. I am not willing to make any predictions, however I am confident that the Panthers NYC team of 2013 will be one that entertains our supporters, never gives up and will be a hard team to beat.

It’s always very special for the players to run out at home in front of our fans and we appreciate the energy and passion that our wonderful supporters bring, as we’re expecting when we take on South Sydney today.Garth Brennan

WHERE do you start with a story on Penrith Panthers exciting new recruit Dean Whare?

Far be it to be presumptuous but it might be helpful to start with his name.

Contrary to popular belief, Whare is not pronounced where. Or Ware. Or even Weir.

When you cheer Dean Whare from the stands in 2013 the correct pronunciation is Far-ray.

It’s rather ironic considering Whare knows exactly where he wants to be this year.

‘‘I want to be in the No.1 jumper,’’ he said. ‘‘Fullback is where I see myself long-term and that’s my goal to make that position my own and to help the team win a lot of games in 2013.”

Improving the 95 per cent failure rate of his name aside, Whare, who spent three years with the Manly Sea Eagles, has so far enjoyed his move to the foot of the mountains and has produced two trademark consistent efforts in the opening two rounds.

Sure, he has had to swap the beach for the unseasonable weather patterns of Sydney’s western suburbs. But in the process the 23-year-old is also hoping to make another switch — from fringe first grader to permanent top grader.

Since scoring three tries on debut in 2010, the speedy outside back managed only 25 appearances for Manly in three frustrating years stuck behind a log jam of quality outside backs.

It led to a love-hate relationship with one of rugby league’s most fickle phrases — Mr Fix It.

Now Mr Versatile wants to become Mr Reliable.‘‘I’ve trained really strong this pre-season and my

focus has been on playing consistent footy and trying to become a regular rather than just filling in for someone,’’ said Whare, who played his junior footy in the St George district.

“This is my fourth season in the NRL and I’m really keen to make it my best one. The pre-season was tough, and I was glad when all the running was over. It was great to start off with a win over the Raiders, and even though round 2 against the Tigers didn’t go the way we planned, I can’t wait to get out there against Souths wearing the Panthers jersey again.”

It completes a rather bumpy circle for Whare.Growing up in Rotorua, he always wanted to pull

on the black jersey of the All Blacks. Now three teams, two sports and a change of

country later, he finally gets to pull on a black jersey. The black Panthers jersey — and he wouldn’t have

it any other way.‘‘Growing up in New Zealand, all I wanted to be

was an All Black. But when I moved to Australia when I was 10, I fell in love with rugby league and now that’s my passion,’’ he said.

‘‘There is a good feeling here at Penrith and everyone is looking forward to today’s game against a very good South Sydney team as a chance to get another win in front of our home fans.’’

In return all he asks is his name to be cheered correctly. Seems like a fair compromise.

panthers on the prowl

Welcome to season 2013 from all of us here at “Panthers on the Prowl”.

In 2002, the Panthers Rugby League Board established the Panthers on the Prowl Community Development Foundation with the aim of providing opportunities for the people of western Sydney to access programs, to improve the wellbeing of young people and their families, develop self-esteem and become positive contributors to the community and society as a whole.

Panthers on the Prowl is an independent not-for-profit organisation, which operates as the

THeRe is one club that has been more active in the player market than any other: the Penrith Panthers.

No fewer than 13 players will don the Panthers jersey for the first time in 2013.

Lewis Brown, Dean Whare, Sika Manu, James Segeyaro and Wes Naiqama are standouts for energy and attitude.

Their recruitments follow the high-profile departures of Luke Lewis, Michael Jennings and Michael Gordon.

‘‘James Segeyaro has been really good. He’s been lighting it up,’’ team captain Kevin Kingston said.

‘‘Guys like Sika Manu and Lewis Brown ... I knew they’d come in with a great attitude and work ethic.

‘‘Wes Naiqama, his experience is so valuable,’’ skipper Kingston said.

It is administered by a Board of Directors which includes the chairman of the Panthers Board of Directors, representatives from local business and NSW Department of Education and Communities.

To this end we have developed a range of funded programs to engage the community in a range of opportunities for building success in all areas of life.

After an undefeated pre-season, the Panthers were impressive in their round one win against the Canberra Raiders 32-10.

In round two, the Panthers were gutsy after losing Lachlan Coote to injury going down to the Wests Tigers 28-18.
