SETTING THE SCENE• Central Michigan (1-10, 0-7 MAC) travels to

Toledo (6-5, 4-3 MAC) for CMU’s final game of the season on Friday, Nov. 23.

• The contest is scheduled for a Noon ET kickoff and will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Dan Gutowsky (play-by-play) and Mark Herrmann (color analyst) calling the action.

FOUNTAIN START MILESTONE• Linebacker Malik Fountain has started

every game of his career, a total of 50. If he starts Friday’s game, the senior will tie Nick Beamish for the second-longest start streak in program history. The longest is 52 games by Andrew Hartline from 2005-08.

SENIOR SEND OFF• This is the final game for seniors Trevor

Apsey, Michael Armstrong, Alex Briones, Nate Brisson-Fast, Shakir Carr, Jon Carson, Malik Fountain, Marcus Griffin, Logan Hessbrook, Luke Idoni, Joe Komel, Alex Neering, Jack Sheldon, Devon Spalding, Mitch Stanitzek, Tyjuan Swain and Clay Walderzak.

• This group has led CMU to three bowl games, 22 wins, 15 Mid-American Conference victories, and a share of the 2015 MAC West Division title.

• This group is the first to have played all or a majority of their career’s for Coach Bonamego.

HONORARY CAPTAIN• The honorary captain for Friday is Kevin

Henry, a letterwinner from 2011-14.• Henry started 30 games in the offensive

line for the Chippewas, playing in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl and the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl.

• Won the team’s Gridiron Gladiator award his senior year, given to the player who best exemplifies great toughness and perseverance on the field and in the weight room.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN-TOLEDO SERIES• CMU owns an 18-25-3 record in its all-time

series with Toledo, which dates back to 1928.

• The Chippewas have lost the last 10 games versus the Rockets, but CMU won the previous five (2005-09). Prior to that, the Rockets won 10 straight (1995-2004).

• The last game at Toledo was a 31-17 Rockets victory in 2016.

• The Chippewas’ last victory in the series came in 2009, a 56-28 home win.

• CMU’s last win at the Glass Bowl was in 2008, 24-23.

• Central Michigan is 6-14-2 in games at Toledo.

STRONG PASS DEFENSE• The Chippewas continue to have one of the

strongest passing defenses in the nation. The program leads the league and ranks third nationally in passing yards allowed (148.0 per game) while also having the second-best mark in the MAC in passing efficiency defense (113.4), good for 24th in the nation.

• In MAC games, Central Michigan is giving up a conference-best 141.0 yards per game.

• The Chippewas have given up over 200 yards passing in two games (Ball State, 202 yards & Eastern Michigan, 212 yards) and only one completion over 40 yards (Akron, 56 yards)

• Last season, Central Michigan led the MAC in passing yards allowed (185.5), interceptions (19) and passing efficiency defense (108.8). Amazingly, CMU returned only one starter, Sean Bunting, from last year’s secondary.

• CMU only has one senior a part of its secondary group, Tyjuan Swain.

STANITZEK EARNS CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS

• Mitch Stanitzek has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Football Team, which is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

• Stanitzek is a fifth-year senior defensive end from Grand Rapids who carries a 3.74 grade point average. He is working toward a master’s degree in business administration after earning a bachelor of science degree last spring with a double major in marketing and logistics.

• He is one of 25 football student-athletes named to the District 5 team. District 5 comprises Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

• Stanitzek, a team captain, has recorded 36 tackles this season including 21 solos. He tied his career high with seven tackles in an Oct. 13 game against Ball State. He has totaled three sacks among 6.5 tackles-for-loss, and forced one fumble this season.

Mount Pleasant, Mich.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Toledo slogged its way to 310 rushing yards on Saturday in handing Central Michigan a 30-10 loss before 15,572 on homecoming at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

The loss dropped the Chippewas to 3-4, 1-2 Mid-American Conference. CMU plays a league game at Ball State next Saturday.

Terry Swanson rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns as the Rockets (5-1, 2-0) moved the ball effectively on the ground in a game played in steady rain. Shakif Seymour added 117 yards and a touchdown for Toledo, which averaged 5.5 yards per play on the ground and 399 total.

CMU quarterback Shane Morris connected with Tyler Conklin on a 26-yard TD pass with just over a minute remaining.

LEADER ON DEFENSE• Malik Fountain is CMU’s leader on defense

as the senior has a team-best 142 tackles this year. He has 80 solo stops, 7.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He has been CMU’s leading tackler in 10 of the 11 games this year.

• The linebacker leads the Mid-American Conference in total tackles, sitting ahead of Khalil Hodge of Buffalo, 142-122. Fountain is first in solo stops over John Lako of Akron (65).

• In conference games, Fountain is averaging 14.0 tackles per game. That leads the league by over a two tackles per game.

• Fountain ranks third in the nation in tackles per game (12.9) and in solo tackles per game (7.3). He is third in total tackles and second in total solo tackles.

• Fountain made 15 tackles against Akron, moving him past Mike Bevier and Shawn Williams (352) and into ninth on CMU’s career tackles list. He has 388 tackles and needs eight to move into eighth, which is held by Bryan Gross (1976-78) with 396 stops.

• Fountain sits in 10th on CMU’s single season list with 142. He needs just nine tackles to move into second, matching Jim Schulte’s mark of 151 stops in 1973.

• The senior ranks among the NCAA’s active career leaders in three categories. He is sixth in career total tackles (388), third in career solo tackles (218), and 13th in career assisted tackles (170).

• Fountain was named the MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Northern Illinois. Fountain had a career-high 18 stops against NIU including eight solo stops. The 18 tackles ties Jahleel Addae (2011) and Justin Cherocci (2014) for the most tackles in a game by a Chippewa in the past 15 seasons.

OFFENSIVE NOTES• The Chippewas have had success running

the ball lately, led by running back Romello Ross.• Through the first five games, CMU

averaged 108.6 yards per game. Since Ross returned full time against Buffalo, CMU has averaged 125.0 yards per game in six games.

• Ross (111 yards) and Tommy Lazzaro (110 yards) both had standout games versus Ball State, career-highs for both.

The last time two CMU players had over 100 yards rushing in a game was 10/15/16 at NIU when Devon Spalding had 124 yards and Jahray Hayes tallied 105 yards.

• CMU’s 261 rushing yards against Ball State was the most since the Chippewas tallied 269 yards at Eastern Michigan on 11/1/2014.

• Twelve offensive players have gotten their first career start this season. This includes all three quarterbacks (Tony Poljan, Austin Hergott & Tommy Lazzaro), a pair of redshirt-freshmen lineman (Jamezz Kimbrough & Nick Follmer), center Joe Komel, true freshman tight end Bernhard Raimann, fullback Hunter Buczkowski, running back Kobe Lewis and wide receivers JaCorey Sullivan, Julian Hicks and Drayton Law. Only one offensive player, Shakir Carr, has started more than 21 games as the offensive guard stands at 28.

• For all four receivers who have caught a touchdown this year, that was their first career TD at CMU. Jamil Sabbagh got his touchdown grab versus Kansas, while Julian Hicks broke through at NIU, JaCorey Sullivan got his first TD catch against Maine, and Tony Poljan caught one against Michigan State.

DEFENSIVE NOTES• Mike Danna has had a breakout season

with 9.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles-for-a-loss. He leads the MAC in sacks, ranking 10th nationally, and ranks third in the conference and 26th in the country in TFLs. He had a standout game against Maine, posting four sacks, 5.0 tackles-for-a-loss and seven solo tackles. His five TFLs are the most by a CMU player since 2005 while his four sacks match the best mark by a Chippewa in the last 15 years. Danna sits fourth on CMU’s single-season sacks list and eighth in the career sacks (15.0)

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES• True freshman Kobe Lewis has made an

immediate impact on CMU’s return game as he ranks fourth the conference in kick return average (22.1). He ranks second in the MAC in total kick return yards with 552 which also ranks 14th in the nation.

• Punter Jack Sheldon is having another outstanding season. The senior had the third-best season average last year (43.4) in CMU history and is averaging 41.3 yard per punt this season. He ranks fifth in the MAC in punting average.

Chippewas at Rockets

CHIPPEWA NAMEThe Central Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved the continued use of the nickname “Chippewas” in association with CMU. The university’s goals are to use the name with honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans, and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty, and staff to Native American traditions and cultures.

Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we have worked to address this important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’s efforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines, and copy that present inappropriate and inaccurate images of Native Americans.

Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask for your continued cooperation and sensitivity. With your assistance, we can continue to use the Chippewa name with dignity and respect.

TICE’S SPECIAL START TO THE SEASON• Kicker Ryan Tice has had an interesting

journey to Central Michigan. Tice spent three seasons at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee as a graduate in May. The Saline, Mich., native made the decision to return in-state in mid-August and was granted a waiver to play the day before CMU’s season opener at Kentucky.

• He saw action on kickoffs in the first two games before stepping in as the Chippewas’ field goal/PAT kicker midway through the NIU game.

• Tice is 10-12 on field goals and 14-15 on PATs. He is second in the conference lead in field goal accuracy (83.3 percent) and ranks 21st nationally.

• Seven of his field goals have been 40+ yards, the third-most in the nation.

• Tice was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza award, the lone MAC player selected.

• The junior’s 53-yard field goal against Ball State is the third-longest in program history. Rade Savich holds the school record with a 57-yard boot in 1975 while Kevin Nicholl made a 54-yarder in 1989. Tice’s kick is the longest by a MAC kicker this year and tied for the 16th-longest in FBS. It was also the first 50+-yard field goal by a CMU kicker since David Harmon hit a 50-yarder in the 2012 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl against Western Kentucky.

REED A FORCE ON DEFENSE• Central Michigan safety Devonni Reed, a

redshirt freshman from Detroit, has made a major impact early in his career at CMU. He is fifth in the MAC in solo tackles with 5.3 per game.

• Reed also ranks 10th in the MAC and 86th in the nation in total tackles per game (7.8). He is one of the highest-ranked freshman in the country.

• He was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Chippewas’ 35-20 season-opening loss at Kentucky.

• Reed made a team-high 14 tackles and returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown to lead the CMU defense. Eleven of Reed’s tackles were solo stops. It was his first career game.

FOOTBALL NAMES FOUR PERMANENT CAPTAINS FOR 2018 SEASON

• Malik Fountain, Mitch Stanitzek, Shakir Carr and Devon Spalding are the permanent captains for the 2018 season.

• Fountain is a senior linebacker from Chicago. He is a two-time All-MAC selection and a three-year starter. Fountain has 388 career

tackles and 23.5 career tackles-for-a-loss.• Stanitzek is a senior defensive end from

Grand Rapids, Mich. A two-year starter, he has made 93 tackles and 8.0 sacks during his career.

• Carr is a senior offensive lineman from South Bend, Ind. He has made 28 starts for CMU.

• Spalding is a senior wide receiver from Canton, Mich. He played running back in his first three seasons at CMU, racking up 2,047 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns.

• CMU’s fifth captain each game will be the individual who earns the honor of wearing Derrick Nash’s No. 21 jersey.

STANITZEK RECOGNIZED• Mitch Stantizek has been named a

semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the top college football scholar-athlete in the nation.

• Stanitzek, a fifth-year senior defensive end from Grand Rapids, is one of 179 so named. The award is presented by the National Football Foundation, which will select 12-14 finalists who each will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The finalists will travel to New York for the NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4.

• Stanitzek is working toward his master’s in business administration after earning his bachelor of science degree with a double major in marketing and logistics management last spring. He graduated with a 3.77 grade point average.

• Stanitzek has started eight of the Chippewas’ games this season and has been credited with 36 tackles. He entered the season with 8.0 career sacks among 16.5 tackles-for-loss, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

150 TEAM RUSHING YARDS = VICTORY• Central Michigan is 24-7 since 2011 when it

rushes for at least 150 yards as a team.• The Chippewas are 0-3 this year when

surpassing this mark. CMU fell at NIU after tallying 164 rushing yards; versus Buffalo with 168; and against Ball State with 261.

• CMU was 5-0 in games last year when it hit this mark. This included four games during CMU’s five-game winning streak to end the regular season.

POWER 5 VICTORIES• Central Michigan has racked up four wins

over Power 5 teams since 2012, all on the road:

• 2012 - CMU 32, at Iowa 31 • 2014 - CMU 38, at Purdue 17 • 2016 - CMU 30, at Oklahoma St. 27 • 2017 - CMU 45, at Kansas 27

Remembering Derrick Nash The CMU football program lost an important member of the program on June 22, 2015 – Derrick Nash. • Nash, a defensive back from Saginaw, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in

May 2013 as he neared the end of his senior year at Carrollton High School. • Nash was a standout running back at Carrollton High School, leading the state of Michigan

in 2012 with 1,967 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. • After undergoing chemotherapy treatment, Nash played in the Chippewas’ annual Maroon

and Gold Spring Game. He was on schedule to claim a spot on the active roster when the leukemia returned. He began treatment in October 2014.

• Nash served as CMU’s honorary captain for the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl in 2014. • After Nash’s untimely passing, new head coach Bonamego made a promise that Nash

would always be a part of the CMU football family. • To honor Nash, 39 different Chippewas have worn Nash’s No. 21 since the 2015 season• Seven Chippewas have had the honor of wearing No. 21 twice: defensive back Kavon

Frazier, quarterback Cooper Rush, defensive linemen Joe Ostman, defensive back Amari Coleman, tight end Tyler Conklin, wide receiver Corey Willis and linebacker Malik Fountain.

• Two athletes have had the honor of wearing the No. 21 Jersey three times, and that is Nash’s close friends and former teammates, defensive back Josh Cox and wide receiver Devon Spalding.

• Stefon Armstead was the first to wear the No. 21 Nash jersey.

HEAD COACH

John BonamegoFOURTH SEASON 22-28

In three seasons as a collegiate head football coach, John Bonamego has led Central Michigan to three bowl games, a victory over a Top-25-ranked team, two victories over opponents from Power 5 conferences, and one Mid-American Conference West Division co-championship. Bonamego became the 28th head coach in Central Michigan football history on Feb. 8, 2015. He played at CMU for the legendary Herb Deromedi in the mid 1980s, and he proclaimed the position his “dream job” as he became the first CMU alum to lead the program since Bill Kelly from 1951-66. Just months after being named to lead the Chippewas, Bonamego was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Bonamego was pronounced cancer free in November 2015, just as the Chippewas were surging down the stretch, winning five of their last six regular-season games. Bonamego led the Chippewas to an 8-5 finish including 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference in 2017, and to a berth in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Included in CMU’s victories was a 45-28 road triumph over Big 12 member Kansas, and a mid-late season surge during which the Chippewas won six of seven games. Among the Chippewas’ wins was a dramatic come-from-behind 35-28 victory over bitter rival Western Michigan in Kalamazoo before a national television audience.

“I cannot put into words how hum-ble, grateful, and proud I am to be the head coach at Central Michigan University. For me this is not, never will be, and never has been, a job. For me, this is the job.

“This is a place that, when I left a long time ago, it never left me. It has been a part of who I am, a part of everything I’ve done and I’ve passed it on with every player that I have ever touched. I’m very proud to be here and to call myself your football coach. I plan to be here a very, very, very, very, very long time.”

head coach John Bonamego (CONTINUED)

CMU also topped in-state rival Eastern Michigan. That victory, coupled with the win over Western, gave the Chippewas the Michigan MAC Trophy. In his first season in charge of the program, Bonamego led the Chippewas to a 7-6 finish, the Mid-American Conference West Division championship and a berth in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit. In 2016, CMU stunned No. 22-ranked Oklahoma State, winning on a no-time-on-the-clock final catch and lateral touchdown. The play was featured for days on televised sports shows and discussion over the penalty that led to CMU’s last-gasp play continued throughout the season. The Chippewas finished the season with an appearance in the Miami Beach Bowl. CMU placed 13 players on the Academic All-MAC football team in 2017, and nine were named to the all-conference team. Two of those players, cornerback Amari Coleman and defensive end Joe Ostman, landed on the All-MAC First Team Defense. Overall, 45 CMU players have earned Academic All-MAC honors and 23 have been named to All-MAC teams in Bonamego’s three seasons at CMU. Among the standouts who have been mentored by Bonamego at CMU is quarterback Cooper Rush, who is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Tight end Tyler Conklin was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, and wide receiver Mark Chapman was taken by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with the first overall pick in the 2018 CFL Draft. CMU is one of six institutions to have produced both a No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft and a No. 1 pick in the CFL Draft. Under Bonamego, the CMU football program continues to lend a hand in the Mount Pleasant Community and the region. Players and coaches volunteer for the annual Special Olympics games each spring, and helped with renovations and cleanup in March at Eagle Village, a home for teens, in Hersey, Mich. Prior to taking the reins of the CMU program, Bonamego, who graduated from Paw Paw High School in southwest Michigan, spent 16 years in the National Football League as an assistant, primarily as a special teams coordinator. His NFL stops:• Detroit Lions, 2013-14, special teams

coordinator. He helped punter Sam Martin record the top-two single-season marks for net punting average in team

history with a 40.4-yard average in 2013 and a 40.1 mark in 2014.

• Jacksonville Jaguars, 2012, special teams coordinator. He was instrumental in the development of rookie punter Bryan Anger, who set franchise records for punting average (47.8) and net punting average (40.8), with both totals leading all rookie punters.

• New Orleans Saints, 2011, assistant special teams coordinator in a year the Saints went 13-3.

• Miami Dolphins, 2008-10, special teams coordinator. Bonamego developed young specialists, including kicker Dan Carpenter, punter Brandon Fields, and kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. Carpenter was selected to the 2009 Pro Bowl after making 25 of 28 field goals. Fields set a franchise record for net punting average (39.9), and Ginn was the first NFL player in 42 years to have two returns for touchdowns in the same quarter. The Dolphins won the 2008 AFC East crown as they put together the biggest turnaround in NFL history, going from 1-15 in 2007 to 11-5 in ’08.

• New Orleans Saints, 2006-07, special teams coordinator. Bonamego was part of one of the most important games in NFL history: the first post-Katrina game in the Superdome. The Saints’ Steve Gleason blocked a punt vs. Atlanta, and the ball was recovered for a touchdown in the first quarter. New Orleans also blocked a field goal later in that game.

• Green Bay Packers, 2003-05, special teams coordinator. The Packers had four game-winning field goals in 2004, the most by the team since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

• Jacksonville Jaguars, 1999-2001, assistant special teams coach. Bonamego worked as the assistant special teams coach under legendary NFL special teams coach Frank Gansz and was promoted to special teams coordinator in 2002.

Bonamego earned his degree in health fitness from CMU in 1987 and turned to coaching immediately. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Central Michigan after serving as the university’s commencement speaker in May 2009. He got his start in college coaching as an assistant at Maine from 1988-91. He went to Lehigh in 1992, and spent five years as an assistant with Army from 1993-98. Bonamego and his wife, Paulette, have three children, Javier, Giovanni and Bellina.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Central Michigan went on the road on Saturday to open the college football season against a Power-5 opponent that returned 19 starters, including the leading rusher in the Southeastern Conference. In the end, and considering that the Chippewas held a 20-14 lead late in the second quarter, it was not what coach John Bonamego might have hoped for. Kentucky scored the game’s final 21 points on Saturday in handing CMU a 35-20 loss before 49,138 at the Wildcats’ Kroger Field. CMU plays Kansas in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8 (3 p.m.) at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas had visions of another major upset – just like the one they pulled off two years ago at Oklahoma State – after taking advantage of four Kentucky turnovers in seizing a 20-14 lead with just over a minute to play in the first half. But Kentucky marched 71 yards in 41 seconds, scoring on a 24-yard pass with 14 seconds left in the half to go on top, 21-20, at the break. The Chippewas committed 12 penalties for 106 yards in the game. Four of those penalties came in the third quarter when CMU was still very much in the hunt, but needing a spark to get something going. An offensive pass interference penalty wiped out a first-down pass play; a penalty on a kickoff return backed up the Chippewas deep into their own terriotory; and two targeting calls cost CMU 15 yards apiece, and it got two Chippewas – Ty Swain and Trevor Apsey – ejected from the game. All four of those flags came as Kentucky scored twice on short runs to put the game away. The game marked Tony Poljan’s debut as the Chippewas’ starting quarter. The redshirt sophomore completed 17 of 27 pass attempts for 137 yards. He was sacked twice, yet still led CMU with 49 rushing yards. Kumennhu Gwilly scored on a 4-yard run and Devonni Reed scooped up a fumble and raced 20 yards for a score for the Chippewas, who also got two field goals from Michael Armstrong.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – Central Michigan struggled to find consistent production and turned the ball over six times on Saturday in dropping its home opener, 31-7, to Kansas in front of 18,127 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Kansas (1-1), which lost to Football Championship Subdivision Nicholls State a week ago, snapped a 46-game road losing streak with the win. The Chippewas sputtered in the first half, gaining just one first down before the break. They moved it more effectively in the final two quarters, but were forced to play catchup after falling into a 21-0 hole. CMU quarterback Tony Poljan finished with efficient-looking numbers for the second straight week – he completed 18 of his 32 pass attempts for 177 yards. He threw four interceptions, and much of his yardage came late when the outcome was no longer in doubt. Poljan, a redshirt sophomore making his second career start, threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jamil Sabbagh midway through the third quarter, cutting CMU’s deficit to 21-7. It was also the first career touchdown for Sabbagh, a junior. Shakial Taylor returned an interception 55 yards for a TD on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend Kansas’ lead to 28-7 and end CMU’s legitimate comeback hopes.

DeKALB, ILL. – CMU coach John Bonamego went to his bullpen, summoning backup quarterback Tommy Lazzaro who led a second-half surge that eventually fell short, 24-16, to NIU before 12,354 at Huskie Stadium. Lazzaro, who transferred to CMU before the 2016 season, had not played in a game since his days in 2015 at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. He replaced starter Tony Poljan in the third quarter and led the Chippewas on two touchdown drives as CMU drew to 21-16. “It just felt like we needed a spark,” Bonamego said of his decision to insert Lazzaro into the game. “Watching (Poljan and Lazzaro) every day in practice, they both have their strengths, they both have things that they do really well. “Tommy does a lot of things really well and you got to see a lot of it today. His ability to maneuver in the pocket and improvise and make positive plays when things are starting to break down. He showed a lot of mettle there.” The Chippewas trailed 21-3 when Lazzaro entered the game. He made an immediate impact, capping his first drive with a 6-yard touchdown run that sliced CMU’s deficit to 21-10. On CMU’s next possession, Lazzaro connected with redshirt freshman wideout Julian Hicks on a 4-yard TD pass. The Chippewas’ try for the two-point conversion failed, but they had stolen the momentum and, with nearly 10 minutes remaining, appeared poised to post a comeback victory. Lazzaro drove the Chippewas from their own 19-yard line to the NIU 15 line with under 30 seconds remaining but was intercepted to end it. Lazzaro completed 13 of his 22 pass attempts for 128 yards, and he rushed for 55 yards on 12 attempts. At least a half-dozen times, Lazzaro converted third downs either with his legs or his arm. The Chippewas squandered good scoring opportunities early in the game in falling into a 14-3 halftime deficit that grew to 21-3 in the third quarter. Twice CMU had a first-and-goal in the first quarter but had just three points – a 27-yard Ryan Tice field goal – to show for it. In both instances, the Chippewas found themselves within striking distances because of poor snaps to the Huskie punter.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – The Chippewa defense turned in a stout performance on Saturday and the offense in Tommy Lazzaro’s first start at quarterback was efficient enough as CMU downed Football Championship Subdivison Maine, 17-5, before 16,474 at sunny Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Lazzaro scored on a 5-yard run and tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to JaCorey Sullivan and Ryan Tice kicked a 41-yard field goal to account for CMU’s points. The Chippewas fought, scratched and clawed their way to 177 total yards against a Maine defense that entered the game ranked 12th in FCS and allowing just 13.5 yards per game on the ground. It was the CMU defense that shined, making two interceptions, blocking a punt, and making two strong stands in the first half – one with the Black Bears inside the Chippewa 1-yard line -- that proved pivotal as the game unfolded. Mike Danna made four sacks of CMU’s six sacks and Malik Fountain recorded 12 tackles to spearhead a CMU defense that recorded 15 tackles-for-loss that resulted in 79 yards. Safety Da’Quaun Jamison intercepted Maine quarterback Isaiah Robinson, setting up a 46-yard CMU touchdown drive midway through the second quarter that broke a scoreless tie. Tice’s field goal on the made it 10-0 at halftime. That field goal came after the CMU defense forced Maine to punt from its own end zone and Jamil Sabbagh returned it to the Black Bear 23. The CMU defense surrendered just a field goal to Maine, which came in averaging 33 points per game. That cut the Chippewa lead to 10-3 late in the third quarter. CMU answered with its best drive of the afternoon, going 80 yards in 10 plays with Lazzaro tossing to Sullivan to make it 17-3. On the play before the TD, Lazzaro connected with Tony Poljan – the man who started at quarterback in the Chippewas’ first three games – for a 23-yard gain on third-and-17. Maine blocked a CMU punt out of the end zone with just over six minutes remaining for the game’s final points.

The Chippewas rushed for just 95 yards, but a good chunk of that came in the fourth quarter when they needed to keep the ball on the ground and grind the clock.

EAST LANSING, MICH. – The Chippewas showed some life by scoring 17 fourth-quarter points after falling into a 31-3 deficit on Saturday before succumbing to 21st-ranked Michigan State, 31-20, on Saturday before 73,752 at Spartan Stadium. CMU slipped to 1-4 and plays host to Buffalo (4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 6 (noon) in the Chippewas’ homecoming. It is also a return to Mid-American Conference play for CMU, which is 0-1 in league play. The Bulls are 1-0. “Obviously disappointed in the outcome,” CMU coach John Bonamego said. “We didn’t come here to play a game, we came here to win a game and we didn’t do that. “However I’m very proud of the fight in our football team and how they came out and played in the second half and made a game of it. Just didn’t quite have enough left at the end to pull it out. But I am very proud of the leadership on this team; I’m proud of the coaching staff; and I’m proud of all of our players for really believing.” Michigan State (3-1) dominated through three quarters, holding a near 2-to-1 possession-time advantage and grinding out two third-quarter scoring drives in upping its lead to 31-3. The Chippewas got a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Lazzaro to Julian Hicks, a 40-yard Ryan Tice field goal, and a 29-yard TD pass from Jonathan Ward to Tony Poljan in the fourth quarter to make it interesting. But after Poljan’s touchdown reception, the first of his career, with 6:44 left, the Chippewas never got the ball back as Michigan State simply ran out the clock with a 13-play, 67-yard drive during which the Spartans picked up five first downs. And save for the fourth-quarter stretch in which the Chippewas covered an onside kick and scored 17 points, the final drive was indicative of how the day went. MSU finished with 23 first downs to CMU’s 13, and a 345-245 edge in total yardage. The Chippewas finished with 63 yards rushing against the nation’s No. 1 run defense and gained 182 through the air. “It’s a game of execution, it’s a game of mistakes,” Bonamego said. “We had too many penalties today, too many turnovers in the first half and you can’t do that against a good football team like Michigan State and expect to win. “Really proud of the effort. … We’ll improve off of it and we’re going to be a very good football team down the stretch.”

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – Central Michigan football team committed four turnovers and surrendered nearly 300 yards of rushing in falling 34-24 to Buffalo at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. “We missed too many tackles, we were penalized 10 times for 60 yards,” he said. “Buffalo is a good team. To beat good teams you have to play good football, and we didn’t play good football today. Bottom line: We dropped passes, turned the ball over, we didn’t tackle. We had penalties and we beat ourselves.” The Bulls rushed for 295 yards and took advantage of the mistake-prone Chippewas, pulling out to a 17-3 lead late in the second quarter and then keeping CMU at arm’s length throughout the final two quarters. “There are guys in that locker room that are hurting right now,” Bonamego said. “They are kids, they work their tails off every single day of the week. Every day, they put in a lot of time, they put in a lot of effort. Right now, they’re not getting results and no one’s happy. No one is happy.” Kevin Marks rushed for 167 yards and Jaret Patterson collected 121 as the Bulls finished with 307 yards on the ground, more than double their season per-game average. Both the Bulls’ rushing total and total yardage (434) were season highs for a Chippewa opponent. Romello Ross scored on a 10-yard run midway through the third quarter to draw CMU to 17-10, seemingly giving the Chippewas a shot of momentum. The one-TD deficit lasted all of 16 seconds. On Buffalo’s next play, Marks bolted 70 yards down the left sideline for a score, putting CMU back in a two-TD hole at 24-10. The Chippewas again drew within a TD at 24-17 when JaCorey Sullivan caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Tommy Lazzaro with under two minutes to play in the third quarter. But again, Buffalo answered, taking over at the Chippewa 39 after Lazzaro was intercepted for the second time in the game. It took Buffalo seven plays to reach the end zone, extending the lead to 31-17. The Chipppwas managed season bests in total yardage (340) and rushing yards (172), but the four interceptions and 10 penalties, in the end, were too much to overcome.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – For three quarters, it appeared that the Central Michigan football team had righted the ship. And then came the fourth quarter. Morgan Hagee kicked a 36-yard field goal with 47 seconds remaining Saturday as Ball State rallied from a 20-7 fourth-quarter deficit in handing CMU a heartbreaking 24-23 Mid-American Conference loss at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. “Tough loss today,” said an obviously dejected CMU coach John Bonamego, who saw his team slip to 1-6, 0-3 MAC with its third consecutive loss. “Too many penalties, especially on the defensive side and late in the game (that) extended (Ball State) drives. We couldn’t get (the defense) off the field. “Proud of the effort. They’re hurting right now; we all are. They put a lot into this and its hard right now and they’re not getting the reward of a win.” Ball State (3-4, 2-1) scored on two long drives early in the fourth quarter to pull ahead, 21-20, before Ryan Tice kicked his third field goal of the game, a 47-yarder, with 4:19 left to put CMU back in front, 23-21. But Ball State went on another long drive, this one covering 56 yards in 12 plays, capped by Hagee’s field goal. The Chippewas’ last ditch effort to get into field goal range for Tice – who had nailed a career-long 53-yarder in the first quarter – ended as time ran out and CMU at the Ball State 48-yard line. The Chippewas committed 11 penalties for 115 yards. Two of those penalties, a defensive hold and a roughing the passer, helped to prolong Ball State’s game-winning drive. One of them wiped out an interception. The Chippewa offense turned in its best performance of the season, finishing with 261 rushing yards, 23 first downs and 388 total yards, all season highs. Romello Ross ran for 111 yards and quarterback Tommy Lazzaro finished with 110 on the ground and a touchdown. He also threw an 18-yard TD pass to Tony Poljan as CMU appeared to be in control in surging to a 20-7 halftime lead.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – There were plenty of factors, plays, turns for the Central Michigan football team to point to on Saturday in the wake of its 35-10 loss at Kelly/Shorts Stadium to rival Western Michigan. At the top of the list: self-destruction. “We have to stop beating ourselves,” fourth-year coach John Bonamego said after his team slipped to 1-7, 0-4 Mid-American Conference. “That’s the most important thing.” The Chippewas turned the ball over three times, two of which led directly to Western touchdowns, and committed seven penalties for 59 yards in falling to their archrivals and ceding the Victory Cannon. “Very disappointed, I feel bad for our seniors,” Bonamego said. “We really wanted to send them out with a victory (against Western).” The game was played under cold temperatures, a very strong northwesterly wind, and occasional rain, all of which played major factors in the game. Lightning caused a 33-minute delay early in the first quarter. “The wind was a definite factor,” Bonamego said. “It really limited us a lot. Not to discredit their defense any way, shape, or form (but) we felt like we matched up with their secondary and wanted to take some shots there. The elements prevented us from doing it the way we wanted to.” As expected under such conditions, the passing game was most affected. CMU quarterback Tommy Lazzaro completed just nine of 24 attempts for 104 yards. He was intercepted twice and sacked three times. Western attempted just nine passes. The Chippewas surrendered 305 yards on the ground to the MAC’s top rushing team, fell behind early, and failed to capitalize when they had a chance to pull back within striking distance. Levante Bellamy rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Jon Wassink ran for three scores to lead the Broncos, who won their sixth consecutive game in improving to 6-2, 4-0. Western built a 21-0 halftime lead before the Chippewas got on the board on a 40-yard Ryan Tice field goal. Romello Ross, who led CMU with 69 yards rushing, scored on 4-yard run with under a minute to play in the third quarter to pull CMU to within 21-10. CMU covered the ensuing onside kick, but was flagged for offsides on the play. That, and an interception minutes later that eventually turned into another Western touchdown, snuffed out the Chippewas’ last chance to get back in the game.

I’m proud of the fact that, down 17-0 at halftime, we came out in the second half and worked our way back into the game. We found a way to move the ball.” The Chippewas got a 28-yard field goal from Ryan Tice and a 1-yard Tony Poljan quarterback sneak midway through the third to pull within one score at 17-10. But they couldn’t get the equalizer despite outplaying the Zips and the CMU defense pitching a shutout over the final two quarters. “Our defense played well all day, stepped up especially in the second half,” Bonamego said. “They really tightened up.” Telling of how it unfolded for CMU on Saturday was a 14-play, 72-yard fourth-quarter drive that ended with a failure to convert on fourth-and-1 at the Akron 5-yard line with 3:27 left. A touchdown and extra point there would have tied the game. Poljan, who started CMU’s first three games at quarterback before giving way to Tommy Lazzaro, returned as the signal-caller in place of the injured Lazzaro. Poljan completed 19 of his 38 pass attempts for 169 yards. He also rushed for 37 yards as the Chippewas gained 140 on the ground. Romello Ross led the Chippewas with 75 yards on 22 carries. Most of CMU’s offensive success came in the second half as they battled to get back in the game after Akron used a few chunk plays to set up its first-half scores. The Chippewa defense held Akron to minus-3 rushing yards and 104 total offensive yards in the second half. But CMU failed to cash in on several occasions, including a drive that started at the Akron 11-yard line and ended in a field goal rather than a touchdown, and another that ended in a missed field goal attempt.

YPSILANTI, MICH. – The search for offensive production is, indeed, frustrating. The search for a win even more so. Central Michigan once again struggled to move the ball on Saturday in dropping a 17-7 Mid-American Conference game to Eastern Michigan at the Eagles’ Rynearson Stadium. CMU is 1-9, 0-6 MAC. The Chippewas play their final home game next Saturday against Bowling Green. The Eagles are 5-5, 3-3. The Chippewas finished with just 138 yards in total offense yet hung in on the strength of an inspiring performance by their defense. The defense produced CMU’s only points of the day on a 68-yard Mike Danna fumble return for a touchdown with under 10 seconds to play in the first half. That tied the game 7-7. Eastern Michigan got a 7-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Wiegers to Blake Banham midway through the fourth quarter to take the lead for good. The Eagles added a field goal for the final margin. “The defense was outstanding, just not enough on offense. Not even close,” CMU coach John Bonamego said. “We weren’t able to move the ball through the air. Had a little success on the ground, but not enough to sustain any drives.

Bonamego went to his bullpen for redshirt freshman Austin Hergott, who completed two of his five pass attempts on the Chippewas’ final possession, during which CMU gained three first downs. Hergott spelled starter Tony Poljan, who completed 10 of 27 passes, was sacked three times, and threw one interception. Eastern Michigan used two big plays – a 47-yard pass play and a 26-yard touchdown run -- on its first drive of the game in seizing a 7-0 lead. The defense kept the Chippewas in the game and appeared to give CMU the spark it has so sorely lacked throughout the season when Sean Adesanya sacked Eastern quarterback Tyler Wiegers and forced a fumble that Danna scooped up and turned into a touchdown. That turn of events tied the game and appeared to give CMU a boost. “That was a huge play,” Bonamego said. “That was a gigantic momentum play for us going into halftime. I thought our defense was stellar today.”

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – A tale of two halves. Bowling Green used a pair of big plays on special teams in overcoming a 13-0 halftime deficit on Saturday in handing Central Michigan a 24-13 Mid-American Conference football loss before 8,041 on the Chippewas’ Senior Day at chilly Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas fell to 1-10, 0-7 MAC and closes the season on Friday, Nov. 23 at Toledo. The Falcons (2-8, 1-5) snapped a six-game losing streak. “Obviously bitterly disappointed with the loss,” CMU coach John Bonamego said. “I apologize to our seniors. After a very good first half we let them off the hook. Kids fought hard and they deserve better, everyone deserves better. Very, very disappointed.” The Chippewas surrendered 269 yards in the second half after limiting the Falcons to just 51 in the first two quarters. Twelve of Bowling Green’s 17 first downs came after halftime, and the Falcons enjoyed a 3-to-1 edge in possession time in that span. Bowling Green faked a punt on its first possession of the third quarter, gaining 24 yards on the play and leading to 29-yard touchdown run by Andrew Clair which cut CMU’s lead to 13-7. On the kickoff, Bowling Green hit a short, high pooch kick that the Falcons covered at the CMU 37-yard line. Five plays later, the Falcons were in the end zone again and, less than five minutes into the second half, had a 14-13 lead.

Bowling Green’s next drive ended with a field goal, extending the advantage to 17-13. Midway through the fourth quarter, Bowling Green’s Kyle Junior recovered a Chippewa fumble at the CMU 1-yard line and rolled into the end zone to extend the Falcon lead to the final margin. Redshirt freshman Austin Hergott completed 11 of his 21 pass attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown his first career start at quarterback for the Chippewas. CMU got its points on an 8-yard Jonathan Ward run midway through the first quarter, and a 30-yard Hergott-to-Julian Hicks pass with 34 seconds left in the half. The Chippewas finished with 166 yards in total offense, but just 29 of those yards came in the second half.
